...Joan Didion: What is Home? In Joan Didion’s essay “On Going Home” she writes about leading a double life. She feels like one person when she’s with her husband and daughter in Los Angeles, and a completely different person when back “home” surrounded by her childhood family in the Central Valley of California. During this particular trip, she begins to reflect on her life in Los Angeles. Didion contemplates the fact that she often feels uneasy around her husband, just like he feels uneasy being around her family. At a crossroad, she must decide not only who she is, and the life she wants, but also the kind of life she wants for her daughter. Her life in Los Angeles has cleansed her from her youth—one that was dusty and full of useless trinkets. She ponders the time her husband wrote the word “D-U-S-T” on those useless trinkets and she remembers her feelings of sadness and indignation. She says, “We live in dusty houses…filled with mementos quite without value to him” (139-40). The dust-covered trinkets signify what is important to her, or what needs to be addressed in her marriage. Yet, these objects just lay there waiting for someone to see them—for someone to dust them off and care for them—not unlike how Didion wishes her husband would see her and nurture her in their marriage. Didion wonders which of her two homes is normal or if they are both flawed. When she and her husband are with her family, he becomes apprehensive about her behavior, “…because once there I fall...

...A SWOT analysis is an essential evaluation that every company should consider utilizing. It reviews phases and elements of a company with the purpose of showing what aspects are working well and which ones need to be improved. By applying the SWOT analysis to Netflix, I have concluded that their strengths are, the easy stream and the accessibility that the service offers to its customers. Subscribers can enjoy their favorite shows and movies in the comfort of their home, on the go, during their lunch break and even on their mobile devices or computers. Another strength that Netflix has is their affordable monthly subscription that ranges between $7.99 and $11.99 per month which includes unlimited movies and TV shows. The additional benefits of a membership depend upon how much you want to pay each month. With the improved development of internet speed, more customers are preferring to watch their movies and TV shows online thus decreasing the usage of DVDs. This is considered a weakness of Netflix, because the company decided to separate their services into two categories: the streaming Netflix and DVD.com, a Netflix company which offers physical DVDs that are delivered by mail. The DVD by mail operations have decreased considerably in recent years and the decline of memberships is expected to continue in the future. On the other hand, a big advantage Netflix has compared to other similar services, is the growth of International markets. Netflix is present in more than 200 countries...

...proceedings are frequently hamstrung by language and cultural barriers. Both Kingston’s Woman Warrior and Suki Kim’s The Interpreter illustrate languagelessness of Chinese and Korean immigrants across American states, which are rejection by failing assimilation into American mainstream, loneliness and isolation from other people, and sense of identity crisis. Rejection by failing assimilation into American mainstream For the first generation born in America, it is especially difficult to reconcile the heavy-handed and often restrictive traditions of the emigrants with the relative freedom of life in America. In Women Warrior, Kingston draws a sharp contrast between her fantasy about Fa Mu Lan, the Chinese traditional woman warrior, and the defining moments of her real "American life." Fa Mu Lan had her village's grievances tattooed on her back; Kingston has Chinese stories practically drilled into her brain and is labeled with racial epithets. Her personal struggle and vengeance lie in making sense of the stories through writing, in depicting through words the struggles of growing up Chinese-American. There is an important difference, though, Fa Mu Lan could achieve her vengeance and then return home, but Kingston's vengeance seems to be a never-ending struggle. She has so many words to deal with that "they do not fit on my skin." The Woman Warrior is just the beginning of Kingston's attempt to articulate her experience, and her journey as a writer is far from over. Whereas Fa Mu...

...Wonder Woman was more than a lasso slinging, bullet dodging super hero; she is an American feminist’s icon. Wonder Woman was introduced to Americans during World War II, by William Moulton Marston, a Harvard trained psychologist and lawyer. She represented nationhood at a time when our nation was at war. She was the daughter of Queen Hippolyte ruler of an all-woman race of Amazons living on Paradise Island, somewhere located in the Bermuda Triangle. She was named Princess Diana, after the Romanized version of the Greek Goddess Artemis (Emad, 2006). Since the inception of Wonder Woman, her origin has changed twice. Originally she earned her power and title she embodied for decades when she won a power competition amongst the other Amazonian women. In the second version of her origin she did not win her powers but instead was given them to her by the Gods themselves. Wonder Woman was much more than a comic book super hero. According to historian Lori Landay, “Wonder Woman operated in wartime popular culture as a metaphor for the movement in femininity out of the garden and into the war” (p. 11). She contained her super human powers from the public and lived a dual life, nurse and super hero. This reinforced the perception that women need to hide the power and strength allowing men to remain the dominate species. By the late 1990’s, Wonder Woman’s image changed and began to align with the times. She bared a more determined look, her body was toned and she donned a more “ready...

...MKT421 Dr. Linda Murawski Blue Ocean Strategy Competing in overcrowded industries such as technology is no way to sustain high performance. The real opportunity is to create blue oceans of uncontested market space. The Apple Ipad and Kindle Fire would be considered Blue Ocean products as oppose to Red Ocean products. Apple achieved a worthy invention by designing the Ipad, which led to the creation of a new market space. Apple intrigued consumers with the limits of the space by educating customers on its comprehensible use. Amazon introducing the Kindle Fire shortly after the Ipad which targeted non-Ipad users and defined its own name by developing the Kindle Fire as a media savvy device with prominent features enabled by Amazon’s massive media platform. Both of these similar but distinctive products made the competition irrelevant. According to Kim and Mouborgne (2004), “Blue Ocean strategy is simply creating an uncontested market space and defining its boundaries rather than competing in the confines of an existing industry”. As the space for products get more and more crowded, projections for profits and growth are condensed. Blue oceans represent all the industries not in existence today in the unidentified market space, untainted by competition (Kim and Mouborgne, 2004). In blue oceans, demand is created rather than fought over. There is sufficient opportunity for growth that is both profitable and prompt. Companies can give rise to completely new industries and in most...

...FORDLANDIA Greg Grandin’s “Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford’s Forgotten Jungle City” unveils the story about Ford’s unsuccessful attempt to improve his automobile industry. Several parts needed for the Model T cars-including tires, gaskets, wires and many others-led to a crucial need for rubber supply. Being the richest man in America, Ford had a vision; it was building the largest rubber plantation in the world by the Amazon River. This would mean lower costs for materials. Henry Ford aimed to not only provide the components necessary for his company’s success, but to also construct an Americanized town (Fordlandia) full of “well trained”, diligent workers. In connection with preparing the land for farming, the plantations positively aided in the development of industrial agriculture. However, Ford’s misunderstanding of the native culture, along with Ford’s efforts to blend American and Brazilian culture, resulted in total failure. Henry Ford’s cultural slips caused numerous complications. He had a misguided assumption that the natives wanted amenities similar to those of the United States. Therefore, he tried to slowly inject the innate workplace with American values and standards. The workers were forced to live a lifestyle that was far from their original way of life. Since all the plantation cafeterias and restaurants only served American food, the natives involuntarily changed their diets. While hamburgers and hot dogs were (and still are) appealing to most...

It will clearly define the dependent and independent variables of the study, state the null and alternative hypotheses, and the methodology used to test the hypotheses. It will compute the sample size required which will provide clear support for the criteria used. The samples that are selected and produced are described, including the methodology used to collect the data and a description of the survey instruments. A final recommendation is offered regarding whether the Kindle is a good buy at $399, or if Amazon needs to alter the price or product. What is the Amazon Kindle? ...Communication technologies allowed the three booksellers to manage their businesses in a more effective and efficient way. Indeed, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Borders have used Blogs, Twitter, and advisement banners. These are a few ways of using technology to meet the demands of their customers. More specifically, Blogs, Twitter and Kiosk have enabled these companies to inform their customers of all the latest products and services being offered today. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Borders are B2C that allow consumers to shop at anytime on the vendor's site regardless of the business hours or location (particularly if that store is not in the remote area one lives). B2C transactions benefit the consumer, in that they can purchase goods and services from the comfort of their home, office or virtually anywhere there is internet access. They no longer have to rush to stores before closing time. Further, companies like Borders, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble can personalize customer’s experience with these stores to the point that the store knows customers’ needs as well as interests and they can inform their customers of all the latest products and services being offered that very likely will interest them. For instance, Amazon Watcher is an application that allows customers to monitor their availability at the Amazon’s stores. Amazon also uses Blogs to provide products updates to its customers. Barnes & Noble uses IREX technology to communicate with its user. The IREX technology...
