This writing piece is about my thoughts on the article discussing how depression in teens and how much of an impact they have on their lives. The article starts off by citing a story about a girl by the name of Faith-Ann and talks about the first time she had done self-harm to herself, afterward (Susanna Schrobsdorff), when the introductory story ended, I then read about something that had stirred open a reaction out of me, the sentence reads “Adolescents today have a reputation for being more fragile, less resilient and more overwhelmed than their parents were when they were growing up” (Schrobsdorff). Due to me reading that line I began to take a deeper understanding into this generation’s melting pot of teenage angst, moreover, I continued to read more into the article and perused into a story about a girl who was following someone on a social media site, she didn’t know this other person too well, Afterward the girl stopped posting and was later found kidnapped and next was found dead (Schrobsdorff). The footprint of impact of that story left inside my heart was a massive one at that, it also reminded me of …show more content…
From personal experience, I can concur that a partial influence on said pressure that teens today are going through is that the pressure being pushed onto them was their own doing, to quote from the article “I don’t have pressure from my parents, I’m the one putting pressure on myself” (Schrobsdorff). Additionally, with the emotions teens today are hiding from the public by bottling up their emotions, Next, I read about a psychiatrist by the name of Fadi Haddad who founded the child and adolescent psychiatric emergency department in New York City, the author then references how unaware the parents are of their distressed child; including parents who were involved in a lot in their child’s

The title is of appropriate length, and identifies to the readers the purpose of the study. Besides, the researchers’ Shaughnessy, Resnick and Macko (2006) have high education qualifications, although the article lacks substantial information on their qualification for their degree of knowledge and experience to conduct such research. Abstract The abstract of the article offers a succinct overview of the study problem, to feature the high incidence of disability resulting from stroke among older Americans (Shaughnessy et al., 2006). Bullied to Death

...couple years, causing fear, severe depression, and even death. Bullying is something that has existed throughout the years, but the recent violent cases that have surfaced due to the consequences of this; is something that cannot be ignored. Such consequences include the suicide of many innocent teens as well as the acts of revenge in cases such as the Columbine shooting misfortune. The big question is, with all these tragic events taking place, who do we hold responsible? Should these students be held responsible for their actions, should the school be held responsible for not taking action and dealing with the problem from the beginning? It is more than apparent that action must be taken in order to stop this hateful violence. Dr. Olweus, PhD, of Norway, describes bullying as “repeated negative, ill-intentioned behavior by one or more students directed against a student who has difficulty defending himself or herself. Most bullying occurs without any apparent provocation on the part of the student who is exposed. (Olweus)” The praying begins at a very young age; it can even begin in kindergarten or first grade, but the bigger targets are in middle school and high school. Usually it is for minimal reasons such as, having an accent, not dressing or looking like “others”, not being from a wealthy family, being too pretty, or just not blending in with other students. There have been numerous cases in which the parents of these tormented teens have tried to make contact with teachers...

Music and Popular Culture

...Music Review Abstract This paper will examine music and social issues. Suicide rates have increased among teenagers, young adults and an epidemic in our military with the prolonged wars. Songs that are composed about suicide and the loss of someone whom has committed suicide has also increased in recent decades. Key words: suicide, music, social problems, demographics and lyrics. MUSIC REVIEW Music is easily accessed today through various media outlets and devices. Music is in automobiles, smartphones, personal audio devices and online. With all these personal devices it has become more common today for people to listen to their choice of music when shopping, traveling on public transportation, working out or virtually any other task at any given time of the day. Music can be an outlet to escape from a situation, isolate oneself or to reflect on something. People can focus in one genre of music, artist or song and repeat that over and over as much as they want. This can be both a good and bad situation. Music can motivate you at the gym when listening to a high beat tempo while conducting a cardiovascular routine. However, music can also keep someone depressed or emotional after a particular event or situation. Suicide has been an increasing problem in young to middle age people over the last decades. This is can be attributed to a number of factors such as wars, financial distress from global recessions and increases in social platforms and...

Persuasive Essay About Bullying

...When a bullying situation becomes very serious, it is important for a school to keep their students as happy and safe as possible in their environment. The article, “Why Spying On Our Kids To Solve Cyberbullying Might Not Work” by Emily Shiner states that school officials “want to know if the kids are posting suicidal thoughts, obscenities or comments intended to bully fellow students. The move is not that surprising. After all, 8 in 10 teens use some kind of social media, a Pew Research Center study found at the end of last year.” (Shiner) As an illustration, certain schools are making moves to come closer to having a safe environment in and out of school. Since so many teenagers regularly use social media, periodically checking certain posts and messages of a student can get those with personal issues the support they need. Without this, a student may not have anybody else to aid them in times of depression or other negative feelings. In summary, a school interfering and monitoring what goes on between their students can prevent and aid teens with depression, anxiousnesses and other...

Teen Suicide

...Running head: TEEN SUICIDE IS AN EPIDEMIC Teen Suicide October 20, 2012 Introduction Every year, thousands of youth die in the Unites States and one million worldwide. Not from cancer or motor vehicle accidents by their own hand. For whatever reason they make that choice that they no longer want to live, and they take their own life. According to statistic, suicide has been known to be the third leading cause of death for young persons between the age of fifteen to twenty-four years; and it is the eleventh cause of death for persons of all ages in the United States. Many people think these are remote incidents, but they are not. Teen suicide is an epidemic that keeps on growing on daily basis. According to the estimate by the center for disease and prevention, annually, over five hundred thousand teenagers from age 15 to 24 will attempt to kill themselves and about five thousand of these teenagers succeeded (National Institute of Mental Health, 2002). Theses estimate indicated that the number of teenagers that committed suicide (five thousand) is synonymous to the number of people whom the cause of death was cancer or homicide. The number of teenagers, who committed suicide over the years, has outnumbered the number of teenagers who were killed by homicides by at least ratio three to two. That is ridiculous! To some people it sound unbelievable but as we continue to read various articles and continue to expose these occurrences on the internet...

Media Impact On Social Media

...Teenagers are the most profuse users of social media. 21st century teens have grown up with a large component of their culture influenced by social media regardless of their surrounding. “ Social media can make teens more informed citizens of the country. An example is for intellectual benefits – children can develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills by playing computer games designed to develop these skills, or they can develop ethical thinking by comparing family values with values in fiction or documentaries”.(Homayoun) This is important because by hearing from all parties about the problems the world or what the country is facing, they’ll learn how to form their own opinions at an early age. This is more than most members of previous generations can say for themselves.(Chell)Information is more democratic and available than ever before, yet the dangers associated to it are very real. Some adolescents have been...

Causal Analysis Essay

...Causal Analysis Essay Brigette Sears Engl 101 XBox 360 and other electronics and social media are raising our children. Todays children spend so much time playing video games, surfing the net and ‘playing’ on social media, they lack many of the normal developmental aspects that are needed for appropriate entry into society. On the contrary, children that are spending more time on video games are becoming anti-social in the best case, and in the worst case, violent. I believe that it is important to actively raise children with parental love and Gods moral compass. Children today spend a large amount of time on the internet, social media, and game playing. This is a distinct difference from what has happened a generation ago. “Young people now devote an average of seven hours and 38 minutes to daily media use, or about 53 hours a week -- more than a full-time job -- according to Kaiser Family Foundation”. (Rubin) In previous generations, without internet, children would go out and play with one another. Riding bikes, playing hide and seek or just being outside was the norm when the previous generation was young. Bonnie Miller Rubin states in her LA Times article that children are spending more time inside. They are playing video games and not going outside at all. It is a major problem with the kids of all ages. It is usually video games with younger children. She also says that the problem persists with older children as well. Older kids are using their...

Psychological Measure Paper

...Hamilton Depression Rating Scale Depression is a prevalent psychiatric illness, afflicting approximately 16% of all Americans (Simon, 2003). Environmental and biological factors play a major role in an individual’s likelihood to develop depression. The exact causes of depression are unknown, but certain common triggers are attributed to the onset of symptoms, such as stress or chemical imbalance. Although some forms of depression are inherited, individuals without a prior family history of depression can also experience it. Throughout one’s lifespan different risk factors, such as life changing events or traumatic experiences, can lead to episodic depression, which is normal in most cases. Others may experience chronic severe depression with extreme, debilitating symptoms, which are at higher risk of suicide. During the early development of psychology, depression was not initially viewed as a psychological disorder. Due to the evolution of psychology as a science, psychologists have a more profound understanding of how one’s biological and environmental factors affect one’s moods, behaviors, and overall health. Today, depression is a commonly diagnosed and treated psychological disorder. Professionals have developed various psychological tests and measurements to effectively diagnose and treat depression. One commonly used tool to measure depression is the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale or HDRS. Summarize selected articles The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale was created...
