...`#16 HABOC, Bea IC-PH Reflection in theology Devotion and Devotions Devotion and devotions: Pre-title Before, I begin to write my reflection, I would like to take this reflection as a journal. A journal of my journey today, Jan. 16, Thursday. Thursday is my most hate day. Know why? I’ve always been doomed by problems every Thursday. Whatever it may be, quarrel among friends, misunderstanding between me and my subjects or just plain not-myself day, Thursday will always come across to me as an evil witch, bewitching my supposedly happy-ending day. Well now, I’m sitting in one of wooden chairs in civil law section of library and I hear the ringing of my alarm to start reviewing and reading my lessons. I’ve decided to start with doing my reflection for devotion and devotions. Devotion and devotions: The Real Deal It begins with “In death, life is not ended, but changed” I like the word changed for the most part since I think it is the absolute, perfect word to describe the article in the essence that it sums up our faith and devotion to God. We want to change our ways, our evil ways, be change by God’s love or our boyfriend’s love, change for the future, change, change, change! It is absolutely nonsense to think that we would just wait for change to happen. Would it be today? Next Friday? I don’t think so. Change comes from us and change would not be possible without believing or putting one’s faith. And faith comes with understanding like actions should be accompanied...

...The Devotion of Hearing Samuel answered, ’Speak, for Your servant hears’ —1 Samuel 3:10 Just because I have listened carefully and intently to one thing from God does not mean that I will listen to everything He says. I show God my lack of love and respect for Him by the insensitivity of my heart and mind toward what He says. If I love my friend, I will instinctively understand what he wants. And Jesus said, “You are My friends . . .” (John 15:14). Have I disobeyed some command of my Lord’s this week? If I had realized that it was a command of Jesus, I would not have deliberately disobeyed it. But most of us show incredible disrespect to God because we don’t even hear Him. He might as well never have spoken to us. The goal of my spiritual life is such close identification with Jesus Christ that I will always hear God and know that God always hears me (see John 11:41). If I am united with Jesus Christ, I hear God all the time through the devotion of hearing. A flower, a tree, or a servant of God may convey God’s message to me. What hinders me from hearing is my attention to other things. It is not that I don’t want to hear God, but I am not devoted in the right areas of my life. I am devoted to things and even to service and my own convictions. God may say whatever He wants, but I just don’t hear Him. The attitude of a child of God should always be, “Speak, for Your servant hears.” If I have not developed and nurtured this devotion of hearing, I can only hear God’s...

...STEP 1: Make the sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. STEP 2: Say the Apostles' Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. STEP 3: Say 1 "Our Father": Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done, On earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. STEP 4: Say 3 "Hail Mary's": (For the virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity) Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. ...Rienz Tolentino ELX101 Blessed Jacinta and Francisco Marto Shepherds of Fatima Jacinta, a six year old girl, and his brother Francisco, who is almost two years older than her, the son and daughter of Peter and Olympia Marto. Lucia dos Santos is their cousin who is nine-years-old. The three were always together. They carried their lunches with them in a pasture land. The three shepherds always pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Angel of God. After lunch they would recite the rosary together. Jacinta invented that instead of saying the complete prayers, one of the three would call, “Hail Mary!” and the other would answer, “Holy Mary!” They would simply end each decade with the two words “Our Father” One Evening, as they were leading the flocks home, Jacinta dropped behind Lucia and Francisco. “What are you doing?” Lucia asked in surprise as she noticed Jacinta walking in the middle of the sheep. “I want to be like Jesus in that holy picture they gave me”, Jacinta explained, “The picture has Jesus right in the middle of all the sheep. And he`s carrying one of them in his arms”. “No lamp is as beautiful as the Lord`s!” Francisco would declare to Lucia and Jacinta. “I like our Lady`s lamp better,” Jacinta would answer, (This was her name for the moon). “It`s not hot like our Lord`s. It doesn`t burn us,” One day after the three had eaten their lunch, a strong gust of wind rattled the trees and above the olive orchard at the foot of the hill, they saw a white figure...

...The word “devotion” is seen in everyday life, and some people may not even notice it. For example, spouses are devoted to their spouses. Soldiers are devoted to protecting this country. Some individuals are devoted to certain religious saints. Additionally, scientists are devoted to finding cures for many diseases. There are many examples as to how the word “devotion” is used daily. Devotion is very important to many and without it, many problems could arise. If spouses weren’t devoted to each other, subsequently they would have problems in their marriage, or even if they were just in a relationship. If soldiers weren’t devoted to protecting this country, then this country would be weak. Even though more powerful words exist, the word “devotion” is one of the most important because it means an infatuation or loyalty an individual has for a person, activity or cause. Being devoted to a person is very influential. For example, in marriages and relationships, both individuals are devoted to one another. Which means that they’ve chosen one another to love for the rest of their lives and shouldn’t wish to be with anyone else. If one...

...Ave Maria Frank O’Hara’s “Ave Maria” can be a great voice for mothers depending on the way it is interpreted. The name of the poem itself literally holds a Latin meaning “Hail Mary.” Hail Mary is prayer to the Virgin Mary saluting her to the mother of God which conveys that this poem will reach out to mothers in a serious way. The first time I read this poem through I began to relate. I could relate to almost every part of the poem. Ave Maria can either be a good way of giving advice to a mother or it can be bad. Most will take the literal meaning but from my personal experience the literal meaning may not be the best way to go. O’Hara uses his thoughts, opinion and sarcasm to reach out to the mothers of America. speaks on parenting as a mother and their relationship with their child. Frank O’ Hara speaks on parenting as a mother and their relationship with their child. He began telling mothers to let their children out of the house. He quotes, “Mothers of America/ let your kids go to the movies (lines1&2)!” It’s good to let them get away from you so they won’t have to know what you, as a parent, are always doing. O’ Hara uses the movies as a way to get his point across because that is a common place where kids like to go alone. “When you grow old as grow old you must/ they won’t hate you (lines7&8).” That’s only because they won’t know how it is to be held in. As they’re out the child will feel to be in the best moments of their life. “They will know where candy bars came...

...Christian life devotion Do you ever worry that you're not perfect enough for God to care about you? If you've ever visited an apple farm or even gone food shopping with your parents, it's natural to look for the best apples on the tree or shelf, not the bruised ones that lie on the ground and look unappealing. Well people are the same and sometimes we assume that God does exactly the same thing when he looks at us. But He doesn't. He sees the bruised apples and still picks them up and places them in His basket. You may be that bruised apple, wounded from the the world, battered by guilt and condemnation or maybe have sinned a couple times, however, God is telling you that you are just as important to Him as the other 'perfect' apples. No matter how bruised you are, His love is always present and sufficient for you. As 1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us, The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. Are you the sort of person that is always thinking about how others are more beautiful than you, more talented, has more things than you, has better luck or even maybe more spiritual than you? I know that I do. When we do that, we're forgetting what God has said about us. This leads to us feeling less of ourselves and even believing the lies the devil tells us through the media, magazines or through other peoples mouths. We forget who we are and start chasing after shadows, trying so hard to fit into the...

...ENGLAND - Queen Henriette Marie is a Roman Catholic, who's incredibly strong devotion to her faith will cost King Charles his victory against Parliament in the Civil War. Starting from 1625, the Queen has become a topic of controversy, as she had not been crowned queen in an Anglican service. This disgraceful act expressed Queen Henriette Marie's openness and devotion to Catholicism and angered the general public in turn. Hostility between the people of England who observed the Anglican faith and Queen Henriette Marie was elevated as it was found ill-mannered that the highness would disregard the religion of our country and refuse to convert to her husband's religion. The mere thought that a Roman Catholic would become the Queen of England...

...A Life without Loyalty and Devotion is Not a Life worth Living Kurt Vonnegut’s Mother Night is a novel that deals with the loyalties that humans form to each other, as well as things and places. However, Vonnegut does not address this issue by creating a cast of characters who are loyal and true to a particular person, place, or thing; instead, he places the reader in a world that is seemingly void of all sense of loyalty and trustworthiness. Almost every character in this novel is destitute of all ability to trust, and more significantly to be trusted. In his creation of this dark and uncertain world, Vonnegut is effectively emphasizing the importance of faithfulness in one’s life. Through characters like Howard W. Campbell, Jr. and Resi Noth, among others, he proves that “a life without loyalty and devotion is not a life worth living.” Every character in the novel has either a full-on duel identity or at least a major difference between the person that he or she tries to pretend to be and the person that he or she actually is. Howard W. Campbell, Jr., the main character of the novel, experiences the most severe and damaging lack of loyalty in his life. Howard’s problems begin when he agrees to become an American spy posing as a Minister of Propaganda for the Nazis during World War II. No one knows of his true identity except for himself and a couple other people; therefore, everyone believes Howard to be a Nazi. At times, it seems as though Howard himself is not really...

...The theme I chose was Devotion which means love towards someone or something. The piece I chose to represent this theme is called Legende by Wieniawski. Henryk Wieniawski was a well known Polish violinist and composer. He composed various types of Polish music for the violin. However, his most lyrical and moving piece was Legende which was very close to his heart. Wieniawski lived in Paris and was studying at the Paris Conservatoire when he met a girl named Isabella Hampton who he fell deeply in love with. Unfortunately, her parents disapproved of the marriage, as they thought that Wieniawski was not “financially stable”. His love and devotion for Isabella drove him to write the piece. After he performed this piece for Isabella and her parents,...

...matriarch, who is there just for household duties to a matriarch ruling over the family. From the daily conflicts, we get a clear comprehension of Linda Loman, who has grown from a figurehead to having full authority. Her metamorphosis is shown by her devotion, protectiveness, and strong-willed. Linda Loman’s devotion is a pivotal detail of her character throughout her passage as matriarch. Within the story, Linda shows devotion, saying to Biff, “He’s the dearest man in the world to me, and I won’t have anyone making him feel unwanted and low and blue” (1477).Linda will not tolerate the boys disrespect. Although Linda is weary of Willy’s illness, her making sure his last days are happy ones shows her devotion to her husband. It doesn’t matter how terribly he treats her, the love she feels and thinks Willy deserves shines through. Another instance is Linda stating, “No. You can’t just come see me because I love him” (1477). Linda Loman’s devotion to her husband super cedes her sons. At this moment, it is made clear to Biff and Hap that while they go about living their lives, their mother is holding together the mind of the man who sacrificed his well being for them. She does this in a way, so Willy still feels empowered. The devotion in making sure Willy still feels like the man of the house is remarkable. Linda Loman most defining trait is her protectiveness. Later in the story, Linda shows her...

...Manila, where it was first enshrined, to St. John the Baptist Church in Quiapo, Manila, on Jan. 9, 1787. The original statue, which shows a dark-colored Christ bent under the weight of a heavy cross, was made by an unknown Mexican sculptor. It was brought to the country by Recollect friars in 1607 and was said to have survived a fire while aboard the ship. The image was charred but was preserved, which explains its color. Filipino Catholic devotees have attributed miracles and answered prayers to the Black Nazarene. Among these is the reported cleaning up of a clogged artery of a radio operator in his 60s. This reportedly happened after he prayed to the Black Nazarene on being told he had to undergo a hugely expensive bypass surgery. Devotion to the Black Nazarene was encouraged by Pope Innocent X, who issued a papal bull establishing the Confradia de Jesus Nazareno in 1650. In the 19th century, Pope Pius VII granted indulgence to people who prayed devoutly to the Black Nazarene. There are two images of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, both hybrids of the original and the replica created by Filipino sculptor Gener Manlaqui. The one paraded every Jan. 9 has the head of the replica and the body of the original, encased in stainless steel to protect it from damage. During the procession, the image is placed in a carroza pulled by two 50-meter-long ropes and is brought to various barangays (villages) in the Quiapo district. Police estimated that up to 8 million people joined the...
