August 1793, I awoke from the loud screams of children as they chased each other around the dirt-covered brick floors. Chickens clucked, geese honked, and dogs barked. I sat up from the wooden, splintery, unsoothing bench. My back ached and I barely could find anything to eat. I was blessed to have left-overs or offerings from people around me coming from the market. I had no home, no job, no money, and no family. My mother and sister had caught yellow fever, very slowly and painfully. They died from each other a week apart. I caught it once, but recovered. Thank God! The vomit was a gruesome black, blotched with murky red blood. It had an odor worse than anything. I also broke into sweats, chills running down my back. Nurses often …show more content…
“Why hello there, I’m Matilda from the coffeeshop. You seem very tired and lonely.” I did feel tired, lonely… and hungry.

“My name’s Peter… and yes I feel very lonely and hungry.”

“Don’t mind coming down to the coffeeshop, do you?” “I can serve you a nice meal if you’d like,” Matilda asked kindly.

“Okay, thank you,” I told her as I got up from the bench and dusted my clothes off.

Matilda smiled, “This way.” We walked past the flock of chickens, which were going haywire! Feathers flying everywhere, I …show more content…
I picked her up and hugged her, “Where is she?” I asked sadly. Matilda pointed to the vomit covered floor, her white dress covered in black blood. She looked stiff, her eyes a vibrant sickly yellow, the odor very foul stench flowing throughout the room. I gasped, “You need to get out of here now! Call Dr. Rush immediately!” Matilda just stood there, not knowing what to do or how to speak. “Stay here!” I said as I pushed open the backdoor. “You need to evacuate, now!” I pushed the red haired man out the door, “Tell the persons to not come in, for it is an emergency!” I yelled for help, asking where Dr. Rush could be. I ran past the market, no one to be seen. They all must have fled already. I ran through a flock of pigeons scattering everywhere. Not again! I sneezed. I tripped on a cracked stone from the

Dialectical Journal Analysis

...As a sophomore I feel that there are many practices used within the classroom that are very beneficial to students. However, there are some that I feel are just busy work and not useful when it comes time for a test. One practice used this year which I feel has not been helpful whatsoever are dialectical journals. Dialectical journals are a type of textual annotation used for readers to interact with the text they are reading. A student picks out an important quote from the text then either explains the quote, asks questions/makes a prediction, connects the information to something that has happened in their life or another piece of literature, analyzes/evaluates, reflects on what occurred, or interprets the meaning of a quote. According to Sussex Academy high school English teacher, Colin Marine, he assigns dialectical journals because they allow students to show their understanding of the text, and they are a way for him to tailor class discussions to the majorities of the class needs. Also, they help students prepare for when it comes time for an assessment....

Santiago Dialectical Journal

...1. Santiago is an old hardened fisherman as described in this quote, “the old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck” (9). He is distant from his fellow fisherman and lives in a rather tiny house. 2. Manolin was taught how to fish by Santiago, and had worked alongside him for a period of time. Manolin would only quit when his parents told him that he had to work on another boat due to Santiago’s lack of success. Manolin considers Santiago to be the best fisherman, “There are many good fishermen and some great ones. But there is only you” (23). 3. Santiago and Manolin have a caring relationship as explained early in the novel, “It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty…the boy loved him” (9-10). Even though Manolin no longer fishes with Santiago he still takes care of the old man with all of his needs. 4. Santiago’s home is rather modest as described in the text, “one room…made of tough budshields of the royal palm…in it there was a bed, a table, one chair, and a place on the dirt floor to cook with charcoal” (15). This shows that the old man does not care about having an extravagant place to live or possessing many items. He is satisfied with living with only life’s basic utilities. 5. Santiago is an outsider due to his age and his infamous misfortune. While some pity him for this, others in the village insult his continuous failure to catch fish each day. 6. Santiago admires Joe DiMaggio, a baseball player...

Fili Dialectical Journal

...On the morning of the third day Fíli woke slowly, his mind unwilling to leave his dreams behind. It had been good dream he mused, closing his eyes into the pillow as he sleepily trying to recall what it had been that made him wake with a smile. But attempting to remember the dream was like trying to cup water in his hands; each second it trickled through his fingers until he had to acknowledge that he was awake and his dream had ended. Reluctantly Fili threw back the blankets and furs, standing slowly and stretching his stiff arms above his head as a yawn expanded in his chest. Still in his loose nightshirt and pants, he wandered towards his window and threw it open, letting the sunlight hit him full in the face. Fili closed his eyes and drank it in, feeling the warmth spread across his face like a caress. It was a glorious day, the kind of day when the birds seemed to sing louder and the sky seemed somehow bluer as it stretched above Dale and disappeared behind Erebor in the distance. He felt a sudden tingling down his spine as the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end, his eyes snapped down towards the busy streets of Dale. How strange; he could have sworn he felt somebody watching him. But the people of Dale did not glance up on their way to market, and Fíli concluded that he must have imagined it. He turned from the window, intending to don his formal attire for that day's meeting when sudden shouting from the streets below brought him racing back. The people of Dale...

The Runaway Dialectical Journal

... Solitary confinement was a really depressing scene. People were banging and begging to escape the terrifying prison. John woke up groggily asking himself, Why do I do these things? He then appeared to identify some type of infection spreading amongst the prisoners, but ahead he could say anything else he was thrust into the dispiriting concrete cell. The map seemed to be there for weeks and ant the bottom of this revealing map it said: Cover with dust when finished John stared at the note curiously and took off his glasses as he continued to analyze the map. “It’s a map of the underground, but how will I get to those pipes?” He carefully peeled the tape that held the old, thin paper from the banged, concrete wall and revealed a hole. The hole seemed to be dug by a fellow prisoner and in the makeshift hole was an old, red screwdriver, which was blooming with rust. John grabbed the screwdriver, confused, “Why do I need this screwdriver? It’s not like I could dig myself out of here!” He shared a chuckle with himself and went to bed, and thought about how that screwdriver...

What do the images used to describe the evening and places he will travel through evoke? What do they suggest about Prufrock’s state of mind? (lines 1-9) Prutfrock draws some basic sketches of the place he travels through. The place appears to be a sketchy, seedy, dark part of a modern city since it is “half – deserted” with some “one-night cheap hotels”. The streets twists and turn, making it hard for Prufrock to find his way in the dark. It’s compared to an argument with "insidious intent", the intent to trick him into getting lost. The place seems to be a remote area of the city where vices happens. The fact...

Twilight Dialectical Journal

...__________________________________________________________________________________ THE FOURTH DAY "THE GOLDEN OAK LIBRARY" (NON-TARGET) 6:48 AM "Well, maybe the fifth time's a charm?" Twilight teased while scraping Anonymous' previously failed breakfasts into the trashcan. "Cooking has been my mortal enemy for an eternity. Don't worry, I'll should be able to get at least one pancake this time." He said, adjusting the dial for the burner on Twilight's gas stove. Anonymous poured new batter in to the pan and sat it on the burner, adding the ingredients as he cooked. Twilight didn't say anything, she was just staring off into space. Anon looked back to investigate the cause of the silence, giggling when he saw Twi's face. "Have we really run out of things to talk about already?" Anon asked, laughing while doing so. Twilight's blank face snapped to attention. Then immediatly went back to her blank face while she thought. Most of the time they had spent together was in silence, as is they were total strangers. In a way, they were. They had just met yesterday and didn't know that much about each other. "No... It's just..." Twilight tried to explain her train of thought. "Eh, It's alright, don't feel like you're a bad friend." 'Friend' The skeptical antisocial alien called Twilight, The Element of Friendship a friend before she called him one. Now she really didn't feel like a good 'friend'. Judging by Anon's face, he didn't care about it at all. He was too busy reading the instructions...

Meursault Dialectical Journal

...1. Meursault is very aware of his surroundings during the vigil as demonstrated by his use of extremely descriptive details of the older men and women, as seen in this quote, “I saw them more clearly than I had ever seen anyone, and not one detail of their faces or their clothes escaped me” (9, 10). He noticed every little thing about them, their toothless mouths, their fat stomachs, and their nests of wrinkles. He thought they were judging him so he started picking out their flaws. 2. Meursault was unaware of his surroundings and what he was about to get himself into when walking down to the beach to escape the sun. He was walking toward the glob of rocks that he thought would provide shade, unaware that “Raymond’s man had come back” (57). This unawareness is also one of the things that led up to the killing of the Arab by Meursault. Also, a good explanation of just how unaware Meursault was in relation to the Arab still being there is when he stated, “as far as I was concerned, the whole thing was over” (58). 3. Meursault was very aware of his surroundings while visiting the beach with Raymond, Masson and Marie, and when he returned for the second time. When he came back he said, “there was the same dazzling red glare” (57). Meursault’s use of descriptive details such as “dazzling” shows his awareness of his surroundings at the first visit and last visit to the beach. 4. Meursault seems to be very aware of his surroundings while sitting in his room looking out of his window...
