1. Abstract
The purpose of this report is to determine the differences between travelling preferences among British and Polish postgraduate students. Moreover, the report aims to establish the patterns in which a cultural background influence travelling and to detect similarities between British and Polish attitudes. Therefore, the research is a comparative, cross-cultural study. In order to achieve the purpose, 5 structured interviews were carried out that helped to construct a questionnaire. The analysis of qualitative and quantitative data shows that the cultural background has an effect on postgraduate students' travelling preferences and that there are certain differences between British and Polish travelling tendencies. The particular aspects that affect those preferences are: language, socioeconomic status, geographic area and customs. However, owing to the global phenomena, the cultural backgrounds are disappearing and students' travelling preferences become more and more convergent. The author believes this research will form a valuable asset for tourism industry and it will be a base for future research.

Backpacker Tourism

...aware of the economic ‘phenomenon’ of backpacker tourism and the extent to which it contributes financially to both developed and developing countries. To date, most backpacker research has focussed on reviewing the experiences and choices in travel of the 18-29 year olds who constitute the bulk of the market. Future research should move away from assuming that backpacking is a homogenous phenomenon and should instead review its diverse manifestations, in terms of differences in age, gender, origins, and particular subcultures. Who is a tourist? Who is a backpacker? These two apparently simple questions have been discussed and debated for years by academics. The tourist is a voluntary, temporary traveller, travelling in the expectation of pleasure from the novelty and change experienced on a relatively long and non-recurrent roundtrip. Tourists were sub-classified into four travel roles:organized mass tourists, individual mass tourists, explorers, and drifters. The definition of backpackers included a preference for budget accommodation and emphases on meeting other travellers, flexible itineraries, longer rather than shorter holidays and informal and participatory holidays. Most studies of backpackers have indicated that more than 80% of backpackers are less than 30 years of age. PRIMARY RESEARCH QUESTION * What are the specific needs and requirements of a backpacker in backpacker accommodations? * Environmental setting * Price * Social interaction ...

...Can public transport compete with the car 1 IATSS Research, 27 (2), 27-35. Can public transport compete with the private car? August 2003 Linda Steg Department of Psychology, University of Groningen Grote Kruisstraat 2/I, 9712 TS Groningen, The Netherlands e-mail: L.Steg@ppsw.rug.nl, phone: + 31 50 3636482, fax: + 31 50 3636304 Can public transport compete with the car 2 Abstract Public transport is often perceived to be a poor alternative for car use. This paper describes who may be open to use public transport more often, and how people might be persuaded to use it. A computerised questionnaire study was conducted among 1803 Dutch respondents in May 2001. Results revealed that especially fervent car users dislike public transport. For them, the car outperforms public transport not only because of its instrumental function, but also because the car represents cultural and psychological values, e.g. the car is a symbol of freedom and independence, a status symbol and driving is pleasurable. So, for fervent car users, car use is connected with various important values in modern society. Infrequent car users judge less positively about the car and less negatively about public transport. Consequently, they may be open to use public transport more regularly. In contrast, many efforts are needed to stimulate fervent car use to travel by public transport, because in their view, public transport cannot compete with their private car. In this case, policies should be aimed at reducing...
