Children of today are growing up surrounded by social networking through blogging, instant messaging, and short message services such as Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter enabling children in which they produce, share, and sometimes exchange ideas over the internet and in virtual communities, it has become a virtual aspect of their lives. These sites have a significant impact on the lives of children. Social networking is transforming the manner in which young people interact with their parents, peers, as well as how they make use of technology. Clearly there are positives with the use of social networking involving a great way to communicate and learn, however unfortunately negative effects on the youth also, a major risk associated with social networking is cyberbullying. Without children having a correct understanding of the inherent dangers that are associated with social networking sites children are at more risk every day. The effects of social networking are twofold.It is inevitable to ignore the fact that nowadays social networking plays an essential role in children’s lives with social networking and other related online communication activities comprised 64 per cent of young people’s total internet time (an average of 49 minutes per day on these activities, (AMCA, 2007). One may ask how spending all that time on the social media sites may have a positive impact on them. Well, social media helps the youth keep up to date with what is happening around the world, help the children stay connected and interact with each other even if they are many miles apart. This strengthens their relationship even if they finished school and moved to different locations they stay connected and update one another.On the negative side, the internet is burdened with a number of risks associated with online communities. Cyber bullying plays a major role, in which it refers to a type of bullying that is perpetrated using electronic technology such as mobile phones social networking sites and emails, this is one of many risks that needs to resolved. Cyberbullying is a type of bullying in which someone posts rumours on social networking sites where one will attempt to conceal the identity of his/her self by making fake profiles or websites and share pictures having insulting messages and even share private information which embarrasses the person being bullied. The person being will feel alone, powerless, different, unpopular, sad, feel sick or may even make the bully, bully others too. An area of particular concern in social relationships is cyberbullying. While bullying behavior among peers has always been a part of society, it seems that social networking sites create opportunities for this to happen in particularly intense and ways. This networking also means that acts of bullying can be witnessed by numerous spectators, creating further humiliation for victims. The potentially devastating effects of this use of social networking have been seen in a number of cases, where incidents of young people committing suicide have also occurred, including that of a 14 year old school girl, Chanelle Rae, who was one of four students within 6 months from the same College in Geelong Victoria, driven to suicide after receiving repeated instant messages and threats from cyberbullies. In an emotional interview with Melbourne's 3AW radio, Chanelle’s mother, Karen Rae warned other parents to "keep their kids off the rotten internet" (Wilson, 2009). She revealed her daughter received an online threat in the hours before she took her own life. Australian research suggests that cyberbullying most commonly occurs in late primary school and early high school, with one study stating that 10-14year olds are the most common age group reporting cyberbullying (50.6%) this was closely followed by 15 – 18 year olds (44.2%) other studies have recorded the overall incidence of cyberbullying to be around 20% of all young people. (AMCA, 2007). Cyberbullying affects at least one in ten students in Australia. Cyberbullying can be detrimental to mental and physical health. Victims can experience significant social isolation and feel unsafe. It can lead to emotional and physical harm, loss of self-esteem, feelings of shame and anxiety, concentration and learning difficulties.

Children need support and education to develop the skills needed to understand the risks of social networking sites. Schools can address the issues of social networking to help students manage the risks by using some of the following, implementing a cyber-safety programme into their curriculum. This includes Integrating the cybersmart teacher resources into schools ICT or wellbeing curriculum to equip students with crucial cybersaftey skills and knowledge, provide resources of particular relevance for teachers , Tagged video and lesson plans, Interactive websites such as Hectors world for young students and cybersmart access for students with special education needs. Schools can also book an outreach professional development workshop and also refer parents to workshops, meetings and guides to online safety which is a brief video resource with age appropriate strategies to help parents keep their children safe online.

Parents and teachers should be implementing strategies to deter children from committing a criminal offence; education is key in discouraging this behaviour. These strategies can be as simple as gaining trust with the student or child so that if bullying did occur they would be able to communicate with someone about it and build their confidence so that they can stand up for themselves. This can be directly linked to the ‘Principals of learning and teaching,’ section 1.1 that states “the teacher builds positive relationships through knowing and valuing each student” and section 1.3; “teaching strategies promote student’s self-confidence and willingness to take risks with their learning”. (Unknown author) (2013).These principals of learning and teaching were put into place to demonstrate to all teachers that these are the best environments that students work in. Because if students are able to communicate to their teacher about what is happening on social media then this clears their minds to be able to be educated. Parents and teachers need to be educating our next generation about the effects of not only cyberbullying but, bullying in general because the end result could be the detrimental.

In conclusion, with the expansion of the Internet and social networking technologies cyber-bullying is becoming more common and more severe. The information presented in this essay should give people a better understanding of a major risk involved with social networking sites, what a cyber-bully is, how harmful this problem can really be, and how to prevent cyber-bullying from happening. This essay can be used to help victims realize they are not alone and should not give into a bully’s dangerous behaviours. This paper is to inform society about what has been going on lately and how unacceptable and dangerous it is. Children are resorting to suicide, over photos, web posts, and videos posted by bullies using the Internet. Cyber-bullying is technology powered and will only get worse as technology becomes more widespread. Hopefully, the information presented will help to inform today’s youth, parents and schools to seek appropriate help. Australian’s need to wake up and take action before this epidemic continues its outbreak and more children are at risk of the dangers resulting in sickening outcomes. If you see any kind of bullying happening in front of you, stop it if possible, and then report it.
