The wonderful world of social networking
The text “Five clues that you are addicted to Facebook”, is about Facebook addicted Cynthia Newton. She gets sucked into Facebook so much, that she neglects her daughter when she needs help with her homework. Her daughter goes to her room and sends her mother e-mails, asking for help. Newton doesn’t reply though, because she’s busy on Facebook. Newton knows it’s a problem; she has tried to cut down on her Facebook use, but failed. She checks her Facebook 10 times a day. She finds old schoolmates online, she even found a friend, who confessed he was her secret admirer in kindergarten. She often thinks about going cold turkey, but just the thought makes her uncomfortable. A family and marriage therapist, called Paula Pile, has clients who have the same problem as Newton. Pile has no cure for them. Therapists are seeing more and more people who are addicted to Facebook.
In text one “What is social networking?” they say, that there is a lot of benefits to social networking. It is a good way to make friends from around the world, a good way to learn about other languages and cultures. It is also a good way to keep in touch with friend and family. Though there is a fear of viruses and sexual predators, but it’s just as dangerous in the real world too, you just need to know what you are clicking on and who you are talking too.
In text 2 “Five clues that you are addicted to Facebook”, they make it clear that Facebook, is the devil’s work. They say Facebook is seductive and it interferes with work and family lives. We use it as an escape from our lives, when things aren’t going so well. We begin to neglect our selves, by not getting enough sleep. We become obsessed with old friends or lovers; it can easily get out of hand.
In text 3 “Social networking benefits validated”, they think social networking is a great way to gain confidence, become independent and a good way expressing yourself. Before social networking, you might have felt isolated if you were, say, a fan of “Doctor Who”. Now you can find people with the same interests online, and you no longer have to feel alone. Young people are more motivated to learn from someone the same age, than an adult. They tell us that parents are very cautious when it comes to their children and the internet, though they give them permission to use it, because you’re not in the loop, if you’re not on Facebook.
“… Spending time online is essential for young people to pick up the social and technical skills they need to be competent citizens in the digital age.” I agree. Today we live in a world where everything takes place over the internet. Do you want to check your bank account? Just go on the internet. Do you want to know what classes you are having tomorrow? Just go on the internet. Now workplaces are looking for people who know how to handle a computer. Older employees, who don’t know how to handle one, get sent to a computer course, or in worse cases, they get fired.
Networking Online
Social networking is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. You get to see what they are up to, what parties they attend and who they party with… That is what most people say, when they get asked why they have Facebook. If it is so important to have contact with friends and family, why don’t we just pick up the phone and give them a call? It’s more personal than just clicking the “Like” button, on a crazy photo. It is true what they say about Facebook though, we use it as an escape from the real world. We only write about the good things that happen in our lives, like, “I scored a perfect A on my English essay!” But we don’t tell anyone about failing the math test. If someone actually does write something sad and depressing, we don’t like it, because it sends us right back to the real world, where things aren’t so pleasant. We do the same thing with our Identity, we hide all our faults, and we want to give our friends the impression that we have a perfect life, in the hope of that someone might envy us.
