...Discussion Forum 1 Lude Tai Florida International University Individual Discussion Question (write two short paragraphs): Have you had similar experiences so far in your career? Honestly, I just had several months’ internship experience in the hospital and Guangdong Province Health Department. However, in my opinion, administrative staff or finance people usually don’t understand what physicians are doing. We know that physicians normally work solo, and make decisions individually, which means they usually don’t have the tendency to view and solve problems based on a large-scale vision. They also have little knowledge of finance, but they need to know how to interact with patients. When I was an intern in a nursing department, communicating with patients was a common thing for me every day. I needed to understand their demands and concerns. Better clinical outcomes would show if there is good interaction between medical staff and patients. For finance people, they don’t need to communicate with patients. Instead, they focus on the future to help hospitals develop better and make more benefits. When I was an intern in the Bureau of Pharmaceutical Affairs of the Guangdong Province Health Department, I knew that administrative staff is in charge of hospitals to ensure the implementation of basic drug policy among hospitals. I noticed that they usually got feedback from leaders of each hospital, and they checked the outcome reports submitted by...

...Based on past experiences, how have you noticed trust being developed within a team or group? Realizing that I have been part of many team settings I could see how trust has played a role. I have had difficulties in trusting in others since I could remember. Even though I am great as a team player relinquishing full trust is very difficult. This is because many people have let me down. Saying you will do something and then do not follow through is not very conducive to being part of a team. The minute I let me guard down and try to relax and delegate, sure enough a task does not get done. Trust is developed with the actions of teammates and how well they follow through as well as communication. Often lack of accountability will break trust in any team. If something has gone wrong take responsibility and find a solution. An example where I had a co-worker prove that I could trust was I was due to go on vacation and it was time to place an order for medical supplies. Usually what I have been known to do is place the order while I’ve been away. This time she assured me that she would take care of it and everything would be fine. I was very reluctant to do so, but I did. I went on vacation and even though it was a large order and the clinic would be in bad shape if it was not done correctly or placed in on time I did not worry (well I always worry) about it. She called me the very next day to notify me it had been placed and emailed notification. I know she did not have...

...speakers’ chosen forum. The Supreme Court breaks down forums into three types: traditional public forums, designated forums, and nonpublic forums. See Perry Educ. Ass’n v. Perry Educators’ Ass’n, 460 U.S. 37 (1983). Finally, some public property is not a forum at all. Traditional public forums include public parks, sidewalks and areas that have been traditionally open to political speech and debate. Speakers’ in these areas enjoy the strongest First Amendment protections. In traditional public forums, the government may not discriminate against speakers based on their views. This is called “viewpoint discrimination.” The government may, however, subject speech to reasonable, content-neutral restrictions on its time, place, and manner. When considering government restrictions of speech in traditional public forums, courts use “strict scrutiny.” Under strict scrutiny, restrictions are allowed only if they serve a compelling state interest and are narrowly tailored to meet the needs of that interest. Sometimes, the government opens public property for public expression even though the public property is not a traditional public forum. These are designated public forums. After opening a designated public forum, the government is not obligated to keep it open. However, so long as the government does keep the forum open, speech in the forum receives the same First Amendment protections as speech in traditional public forums. Examples of designated public forums include municipal...

...In the play Everyman, death is personified and treated as an agent of God that goes to visit the plays protagonist, Everyman. The unknown author of the play uses Death as a character to present a very real truth that all people will meet death. Death is an antagonist in the play and represents physical death. The word "death" grabs people's attention because it is a strong word. It is a loaded, often offensive, intense word and it reflects a reality every human will one day have to realize. The author understands death's implications and uses it to draw the reader in. In the play Everyman, the character Death is presented by the author as an allegorical representation of physical death and the reader finds that Death is under God's control, brings conviction, and will visit everyone. In Everyman the character Death is viewed as submissive to God's will and under His command. Since the play is a morality play, the characteristics of Death are viewed as the same as a human's physical death. In the Literature Criticism from 1400 to 1800, the author brings to attention that "[t]he themes in Everyman are strongly reflected in the allegorical characters which populate the work." The play opens up with "[h]ere beginneth a treatise how the High Father of Heaven sendeth Death to summon every creature to come and give an account of their lives in this world, and is in manner of a moral play." In Everyman, Death is merely a carrier and transporter for God. From the beginning of the play...

...Discussion Board Forum 1 Adrian R. Castaneda Liberty University BUSI 620 Global Economic Environment Dr. Virgil Mensah-Dartey October 24, 2013 DB FORUM 1 Question 3 Unethical behavior and unlawful behavior are different in a sense that unethical behavior violates integrity, while unlawful behavior violates established laws. When discussing unethical behavior in the business context, one should consider the overall focus of a business; maximize profits for shareholders and owners. The way a business operates to make money can be treated as ethical or unethical. An unethical type of practice in the business world can consist of a business that is determined to make a profit without considering the morale and comfort of their employees (Svensson & Wood, 2008). By failing to have happy employees in your business and over working them to make a profit can cause an ethical dilemma as the employee can see this type of business operation as a way of prioritizing profit over the employee morale. According to Thomas, Schermerhorn & Dienhart (2004) unlawful behavior is actions that breaks established laws or rules that control business practices. This type of behavior can be easier detected over unethical behavior because by violating unlawful behavior, the individual or individuals are violating written laws. For example, giving away insider trading information on a new medicine is a type of unlawful behavior in the business context. Businesses have written guidelines...

...1. In the Drugs discussion forum, respond to the following: a. What are the benefits to bringing drugs to the market? What are the costs to bring a drug to the market? b. How do we balance the financial return on drugs with patient need? c. How does the immunization experience (parents choosing not to have their children immunized based on flawed data) and reduced production of drugs secondary to liability exposure pertain to this discussion? Of course, there are financial benefits to bringing a drug to the market. Pharmaceutical companies spend billions of dollars developing new drugs, and those investments must be recouped by sales. Sometimes commercial access to a drug allows more progress to be made in research that can lead to other uses of the drug in medical treatment. Outside of the financial benefits, there is the benefit of progressively more effective and efficient treatment for patients who need the drug. According to Matthew Herper, writing in Forbes magazine, although the drug industry has been tossing around the number of $1 billion for years, the average drug developed by a major pharmaceutical company costs at least $4 billion, and it can be as much as $11 billion. Herper says that the $1 billion number works for the pharmaceutical industry because it seems to justify the idea that medicines should be pricey without making it seem that inventing new medicines is so expensive an endeavor as to be ultimately futile. Patient need should...

...Discussion Forum 3 National Security Personnel System 1. I was surprised to learn that in 2002, President George W. Bush created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under his administration. I was under the impression that this agency had already existed. Prior to the September 11, 2011, terrorist attack. 2. Another interesting fact, DHS and the Department of Defense (DOD) were given their own personal system. However, President Bush was given the authority to “exclude federal agencies, subdivisions and units…from relevant labor subsections. This was a major problem with the union because the National Security Personnel System (NSPS) was to oversee about 760, 000 federal government employees. However, the union to NSPS to court and...

...Business Ethics After reading the case study involving Ms. Alexander and her opportunity with Next Step, I would advise Ramona to pray, even fast, about accepting the position. Hopefully she was already prayed up before she went to the ‘Meet and Great’ at Next Steps Headquarters (HQ). As Christians, we must ‘…be wise as serpents, but gentle as dove’s…' (Matthew 10:16, ESV), and one way we get wisdom is to be in constant communication with our one heavenly Father, whom is all knowing. Before leaving, she read up on Next Step. When Ms. Alexander arrived at Next Step’s HQ, she was showered with all sorts of gifts and treated to lunch by the Corporate Recruiter who told her of the circumstances that makes it possible for advancement and the money she could be earning with those advancements. Within Ms. Alexander’s research of the company, she found a mix of different opinions, regarding Next Step. One article, and interview with the CEO, has the CEO talking about how he wants to create a healthier America, making it seem that he truly loves and cares for the people. But, when Ms. Alexander was present at the companies pep rally at Next Step’s HQ, he seemed to be disrespectful and scornfully abusive to his clientele, calling them ‘fat, lazy, lethargic Americans’ who needs to be saved. Turning the spectacle into a religious one. The CEO also talked about being an industry leader in the ethics code in his interview. Ms. Alexander mention that to the corporate recruiter...
