“One of the points about distractions is that everything that they do is destabilizing” Bruce Sterling once said this quote to point out that distractions will sabotage many things such as morals, life goals, etc. In many times people use distractions to try to stabilize their lives which could be a good thing but in many times when reality does hit it could be devastating like in “Creation and Temptation” which was a story from the bible. The main characters were Adam and Eve and it was as if they were covered by this imaginary cloak that blocked them from realism and they were distracted by the beautiful gardens and endless amount of food but once they finally ate from the “Tree of knowledge” it was like the cloak vanished and everything became clear because there were no more distractions. When this did happen God was not happy and banished them. Another case where distraction helped feed fantasy was in the short story “Tricked” by David Sederis he was obsessed with this family that never watched television so of course they were constantly left out of things people should know normally from watching tv, but when the family pops the main characters bubble he turns to T.V to forget about what he just had learned so in this case the distraction (T.V) helped him cope with the thought of the family. But as said before in many cases distractions are mostly temporary and when the real problem becomes evident it could be crippling like in “Araby” by James Joyce when he uses this girl who he had a crush on to cushion the impact of being poor and having family problems and when everything crumbles on top of him it made everything clear of how horrible his life really was. So in these cases distractions delude themselves to avoid personal unwanted responsibility.
