Does the Media influence us whether we want it or not? This question must be pondered, because the mass media has never been more prevalent in our everyday lives. Television, radio, internet and so many more venues, media is everywhere, from the time we wake to the time we sleep and in some cases while we sleep. How has the constant bombardment of media affected society? Whether we are speaking of youth or adults, we have to consider whether the mass media is truly influencing or lives.
Many concerns have been growing in the area of behavior; seems as though people are becoming more aggressive, particularly when it comes to lascivious and violent actions. It has become a daily occurrence hearing of inappropriate actions of children and adults in the homes, schools, and communities. People appear to less caring of others and more focused on self centered interest. Why is this? I believe it’s because of what we see on a regular basis. The mass media is so consistent and prevalent in our lives, and at times people cannot distinguish from fantasy. We as a society have been brain washed, self esteem and values are truly affected. Society has embraced television, movies, and music as way of thinking, incorporating it in their everyday lives. Young and old want to look and like their favorite stars. Not realizing that they are not looking at reality. Make up, body doubles, air brushing, camera angles, plastic surgeries and more make up this image of the perfect people. They are not real but unfortunately we are so inundated that we start to believe and think that we should look, talk, and act as those we see in the limelight. The things we are seeing on an ongoing basis through the media are overwhelming to say the least, sexual explicitness is at an all-time high and violence is off the charts, crude and lude language is becoming more expectable. Whether watching your favorite T.V. show or listening to music, sex and violence is a constant, woven into everything, even shows specifically catering to children and teens are becoming more provocative when it comes sexual deviancy and violent behaviors. Again because of the over exposure of this ideology, this fantasy, many adopt these behavior as their own, being desensitized to the consequences of their behavior and actions. In the movies thing, majorly workout, the guy gets the girl; the girl gets the guy; the hero wins in the end. This is not real life, but as mentioned previously, often times it can be hard to distinguish between the two, particularly with the younger audiences. There is definite debate on this subject; of course not all necessarily agree that the media is creating a negative environment. There are arguments on both sides of the fence.
“Critics of teens on television say: Networks such as MTV should not air programs that feature teenaged actors portraying teenagers in sexual situations. Such programs are not only offensive, but might also constitute child pornography. In addition, reality TV shows profiling pregnant teenagers send the wrong message to young girls and glorify teenage pregnancy. The shows have actually prompted some girls to become pregnant just so they could be featured on television; such shows downplay most of the true difficulties involved with raising a child while still a teenager. Supporters of teens on television say: MTV's teen programs, including the drama Skins, present a realistic portrait of what it is like to be a teenager. The network's reality shows in no way glorify teen pregnancy, and instead portray the negative consequences that arise from reckless sexual behavior. Most young viewers of shows such as 16 and Pregnant see the programs as cautionary tales, and are less likely to engage in risky behavior as a result of viewing them.” (Teens on Television, 2011) When speaking on commercial advertising whether on television, internet, or magazines some type of sexual or violent perspective is present. Let look at Go Daddy.com, I never knew what they represented, I just found out that they are a web host, but I’ve know the name for some time now because of their provocative commercials with Danica Patrick. I’m not a fan of Hardees but I am familiar with their commercials; probably more than anyone they go far beyond good taste. I’m not sure if these commercials will get someone to go out and buy their burgers, but they definitely will get lots of attention. I just thinking for me if they spent more time improving the taste of their product they might be able to get my business, but as it stand now, NO WAY!

I get it, sex sales, but where is the line drawn. Adults can choose to view or do whatever they want but children are being exposed to this type material constantly and I do not believe this should be so. Take the Super Bowl for instance, a sport that brings in millions of viewers including children, this was historically a family oriented event, bring with it a family centered focus when it came to entertainment of advertisement. In recent years their entertainment performances as well commercial endorsement have really pushed the envelope far beyond the lines of appropriate or good taste. I personally do not want my family viewing what they are showing. The Super Bowl has the highest ratings of viewer than any other program. With this type of following companies and their advertisers salivates at the opportunity to endorse their products. To Millions of viewers, and they will do it at astronomical costs. So, in that one minute or thirty second spots, they want to shock or stun the audience in efforts of leaving a lasting memory of their product. Ok, I understand its business, but truthfully I believe it’s a little more, I believe there is a satanic influence that is the driving force behind much of what we view in the media today. I’m not going to spend any time on this subject matter. I’m just going to say open in your eyes from this forward and truly see what other do not or refuse to see. A negative perspective is permeating in most areas of the media these days. It should take a rocket scientist to understand that things are getter worse and worse. I still enjoy movies, television, probing the internet or sports particularly a good football game, but having children, I am forced to make sure I censor as much of the inappropriateness as I can.

Technology's Influence On Memory

...I think a topic of great interest today and every day to really look in to be whether technology, especially social media, is influencing people’s memory. In other words, I wanted to research whether social media influenced the way memories are formed and recalled. I find this topic to be interesting and important because technology has advanced so much in so little time, and new advances are always being added. It’s important for people to understand what technology and social media are doing to who we are as people and how we could better ourselves when it comes down to it. But to truly understand anything, it’s important to know what it is one is trying to get to know. According to Hank Green, memory can be defined as, “learning that persists over time, information that...

Using Material from Item a and Elsewhere, Assess the View That the Mass Media Are a Major Cause of Crime and Deviance in Today’s Society. (21 Marks)

...Item A and elsewhere, assess the view that the mass media are a major cause of crime and deviance in today’s society. (21 marks) It could be argued that with some issues, the media plays a heavy role in influencing people to commit crime. Interactionist sociologists could argue that the media provide a form of database for imitation/copy cat crimes and from seeing these crimes the public are more likely to do them. In the media people are exposed to various types of crime, mainly violent and sexual and so might feel the want to copy these. For example, the copies of Jack the Ripper, the serial killer named the Zodiac or other serious crimes such as school shootings inspired by coverage of the Columbine shooting in America. Therefore it could be argued that the mass media which exposes these crimes to the population could cause these crimes, as they directly relate the crimes reported on. However it could be argued that these crimes which are reported as copy cat actually occur at a much lesser scale than we think. For instance these school shooings and serial killings do not happen as occasionally as might be thought. Although sociologists might argue that the main source of influence even for the small amount of crimes is the mainstream media which reported on them and exaggerated them in the first place. Meaning that media could be seen as a major cause of some crime in this aspect. Left realists argue that media is a major cause of crime also for the fact that it promotes...

Medias Negative Effect on Politics

...Political Science 201 June 7, 2012 Media’s Negative Effect in Politics The media plays a heavy negative role in American politics. During the past few years, society’s judgment has been based on what was given to it through the media. People rarely specifically research on candidates or propositions anymore. Much of the mass media is biased by trying to persuade viewers into believing what they want them to believe are true. Media is created for consumption by a large number of people watching it. The media has a remarkable impact on politics, which is not always good or beneficial. The data collected from the media can either be used for or against a politician. If a politician is favored by a certain network, such as CNN, NBC, or FOX, then the network can help his or her career reach new heights; however, if a politician is disliked then the network is capable of destroying the politician’s career. The media has the desire to make decisions for itself and in return try to convince people of its rightness and distort its viewers’ perspectives. There are many different types of media that can have a different influence on society’s political view. The four biggest forms of media are radio stations, newspapers, the internet, and television. People could tune into radio stations or talk radios to listen to political candidates being interviewed. An example would be in 1992 when "President George H. Bush interviewed with conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh" (Curl). Non-political...

Influences of Visual Media Paper

...Influences of Visual Media Paper HUM/176 Professor Craig Bowler There are many forms of visual entertainment readily accessible to us; it has become the primary source of entertainment. Visual entertainment only has not helped shape American culture but also its values. Visual entertainment comes in many forms; whether it is reading a newspaper, magazines, or just watching television. Visual media has many numerous advantages as well as some disadvantages. Advisements are used to target individuals that find their product appealing. This compels viewers to buy the latest technology gadget or to wear the latest fashion clothes. Media has also changed the way we communicate and this has improved our culture in many ways. For example, in the recent years it has been possible to connect on real time with someone across the world through a computer. Now we are able to connect with people through a simple device like the IPhone 4S. The IPhone 4S lets a person talk through face time and allows them to see each other. Visual media has also made a huge impact on young children and teenagers. With all the new artists coming out changing the music and media culture the younger generation is looking up to them more each day. The younger generations view these artists as role models and want to be exactly like them. The music industry has changed media forever. Artists have introduced us to many different cultures...

The Purpose of News in American Society

...recent events” or “previously unknown information” (Websters Dictionary). News should be something that has a specified influence of effect. For instance, good news would be the end of a war and bad news would be the beginning of a war, and so forth. “News has two priorities: it must be current, and it must mean something to people” (Media Awareness Network). What is the purpose of this news though? There are many objectives of news, but the main objective of news is to inform the audience (Media Awareness Network). This is because of the notion “Intrinsic Human”, better said as a need to know society. We live in a society that definitely needs to know what is going on around them; whether it is locally or half way across the world. Without news, people tend to stress and sometimes are faced with anxiety (Philip Benoit, Powerpoint). With that said, informing the people of such “news” is the job of the news media. The media inform people locally, nationally, and globally about what is going on around them and the important events that have happened in the past, present, and are going to be happening in the future. If we cannot directly observe everything that is going on around us, we must have another way to observe; and the only other option is for a person(s) to find that news for us and make us, as a society, aware. “For much of American history the mass media have been the center of controversy. . .” (Abel, Preface). This goes all the way back to journalism when it first came...

Hum 146

...been shaped by visual entertainment media in a few ways. As America does not really have a royal family, many Americans are fascinated with visual entertainment celebrities. I belive Americans not only focus on what these celebrities do while in a movie or television show, but also what they do in their own lives creating reality television shows that are like Media take out that follow the every moment of celebrities or shows that follow particular individuals, such as Keeping up with the Kardashians. Also the visual entertainment media can have an immense influence what people drink, eat, buy and wear through advertisements, celebrity endorsements and product placements. We American’s values have also been changed by the interrelationship between culture and for visual entertainment media. For example, many Americans no longer sit around the dinner table to have a family meal, but instaed sit in front of the television while eating changing the family dynamic from one with communication to another focused on what programming is being shown. Also negative behaviors are encouraged through many television and films, such as promiscuity, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, rampant consumerism and violence. Also with social influence, there is a lot of debate as to whether visual entertainment media is positive or negative. It really seem to be very mixed between the two as there are plenty of shows that seem to be a more negative influence on American society, some examples...

How Does Economic Influence Canadian Media

...However, economic constraints also influence the development of Canadian media through the generation of revenue for the production and distribution of Canadian content. Due to the ‘economies of scale’ – a concept where the cost and production of a product decreases in a larger market, such as the United States – Canadian media purchases and airs more foreign (often American) programming than Canadian programming (Gasher, Skinner & Lorimer 34). Also, the cheaper American programming is preferred by Canadians and it attracts more audiences for advertisement revenue. In Canada, the media is heavily dependant on advertising. Advertising connects consumers to products and, primarily, is the chief source of income for the production and distribution...

Chartoff Publishing: El Diablo E-Book Case

...the rebirth of a new business. And since I am the one making the call, yes, we might just do that. Changing the Articles of Incorporation might sound far too drastic and exaggerated for the purpose of resolving the ethical dilemma of the subject case study but it is enough to drive the point home. There was no very clear indication on how vulgar or obscene the El Diablo series might be, neither there were excerpts nor a detailed plot with which to accurately judge the potential harm and influence it might cause to its audiences. However, the hints are sufficiently suggestive to reason that releasing this product to the market would be a serious breach on different ethical standards as well as to one or two models of ethical resolution. The objective then of this paper is to perform an overall analysis on various factors at play that would justify the decision of “not selling the product” as ethically correct. The approach is to plot the arguments that support the alternative decision, that is—to sell the product and indicate why this would not work. And this is assuming people would care to do an ethical act even if the whole world does not. There is enough violence without a book or two to influence them. While it cannot be denied that the media (and that includes all sort of communication tools, the web, books, movies, televisions, newspapers, etc.) has a great potential to influence and mold minds depending on their content, it is important to note that criminal...

Ethical Media

...How Ethical is the Media? In today’s day in age media has become such an important part of many people’s lives, this is because of how quickly one can become up to date on the issues of the day. The media is not only used to inform individuals of devastating or serious events; the media has become a source for anything that interests the nation’s and/or world’s population. The news can be anything from entertainment to sports or politics to environmentalism, there is really no subject that cannot be discussed now and days. A big issue with today’s media world is an ethical one, many of us ask ourselves, “Does the media go a little too far at times?” Now and days it seems like no subject is too risqué to touch up on, but should there be a line which should not be crossed? Are there some ethical perspectives that are being set aside? How far will the media go in order to keep people informed? The media keeps us informed of everything that is going on in the world around us which aids the public into being prepared when any serious event takes or will take place. Media is an extremely competitive field because all the networks want to be the first to present the news to the public. The main responsibilities the media has are to be the representative of society in order to best inform the people, to help the different fragments of society come together by providing them with a source of communication no matter the rift that differentiates them from each other, and...

Gender Elements in Music

...to mention few. As the children grows as their gender relations becomes more determined accordingly to their sexes. Gender representation is the way the gender relations are portrayed in different fields to reveal the real gendered life situation in the society, be it in politics, media, education, economic and other fields in the particular society. Music, movies, television radio and magazines as parts of media, gender has been represented through music in this text as follows; This text concerns the representation of gender, or the discourse of gender. If you watch television, walk on the street, wait for the bus or do other things, you are always confronted by images of men and women. In movies, television series and advertisements you see these images and they may influence you consciously or subconsciously. Since media is such a big part of people‘s everyday lives, and is some ways may influence how people perceive themselves and the world, it is interesting to see how representations in movies portray gender. These images, whether it is known or not, may have an important impact upon people‘s lives and how people create their identities. It is highly improbable to think that the media does not affect people, their way of thinking, and the way they perceive the world and themselves (Gauntlett 2008, p. 1-3). Therefore, in order to create awareness among us with our society, the main idea of this thesis is attempting to see how gender is represented in songs by loosely using...
