...Classical Conditioning Paper PSY/ 390 May 05, 2014 Professor Chelsea Hansen Classical Conditioning Paper Abstract: Throughout this paper a theory of classical conditioning will be described and detailed. A selected scenario in which I the writer was able to apply a classical conditioning theory. The description of the scenario will be detailed as well as demonstrated on a chart which was prepared in order to illustrate how someone would apply a classical conditioning theory to the selected scenario. It is important to remember that classical conditioning is a technique that is used in primarily behavioral training. Usually it is when a naturally occurring stimulus is paired with a responsive stimulus. Afterwards a more previously neutral stimulus is then paired with the more naturally occurring stimulus. The outcome is that the previously neutral stimulus comes in to evoke and the response is without the presence of the naturally occurring stimulus. The most common names given to the two following elements are known as the conditioned stimulus and the conditioned responses. Classical conditioning came to life through the hard work and dedication from the well world renowned investigations of Psychologist Ivan Pavlov. Pavlov Born September 14, 1849 in Russia knew from very early he loved the study of psychology and worked hard on focusing on the Classical Conditioning theory “Operant and classical conditioning are two different ways in which organisms come to reflect...

...the right side of the flowerbed. There is a dog that constantly pees on the left side of the flowerbed. The left side of the flowerbed receives more sunlight than the right side. Problem: The plants on the right side of the flowerbed are not growing as well as the flowers on the left side of the flowerbed Hypothesis One: Because the left side of the flowerbed receives more sun light, the flowers grow better on that side. Hypothesis Two: The flowers on the left side grow better than the right side because of the sunlight and dog pee combination. Experiment: Collect samples of the soil from both sides of the flowerbed. Test the soil for nutrients. Note the amount of time the flowers on each side of the flowerbed receives sunlight. Water the flowerbed as usual. Note how often the dog pees on the flowerbed. Place some of the flowers that are on the right side of the flowerbed in another container using the same soil they are growing in and put on the left side of the flowerbed so that they receive the same amount of sunlight as the plants that are growing well. Observation of Experiment: The results from the soil sample testing for nutrients revealed that there are elevated levels of nitrogen in the soil on the left side of the flower bed. The amount of time the left side receives sunlight vs. the sunlight the right side of the flower bed is 3 to 1. The flowers on both...

...Bartel Williams Professor Johnson Eng 121-013 7 April 2014 Research Paper Proposal Center Title, Do Not Bold or Underline Question Posed: Throughout the book we hear Rose Mary’s complaint: “I’m a grown woman now, why can’t I do what I want to do” (Walls 58)? At what point can adults do whatever they want, if at all? When is it time to put other needs before your own? Why does Rose Mary behave this way? To answer this question I am going to attempt to diagnose Rose Mary with a mental illness, to justify her thinking and reasoning throughout the memoir. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, bipolar disorder is "a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks" Jeannette seems to understand that her mother is mentally ill, “"She'd be happy for days on end, announcing that she decided to think only positive thoughts" She goes on to say "But the positive thoughts would give way to negative thoughts...when that happened, Mom would refuse to get out of bed... she would lay wrapped up in blankets on the sofa bed, sobbing about how much she hated her life" (Walls 157). I also will study her artwork, and how she balanced art and motherhood. Was her artwork so important to put before her Children’s welfare? “A FEW DAYS AFTER Mom and Dad brought me home, I cooked myself some hot dogs. I was hungry, Mom was at work on a painting, and no one else was there to fix them for me (Walls...

For further information on how the New Forest National Park Authority aims to identify and manage both the positive and negative effects of the number of visitors and the level of recreation within the Park see the Tourism and Recreation: Managing the Impacts fact sheet. The following facts and figures come from a result of a number of surveys carried out by Tourism South East Research Services, September 2005. Volume and Value estimates The total visitor volumes using the New Forest Park is estimated at 13,555,400 visitor days (excluding business tourists and personal and social visits to friends and relatives). Total spending associated with leisure visits to the New Forest National Park is estimated at around £107.6 million. Taking into account ‘leakage’, it is estimated that spending within the New Forest on leisure trips amounts to £72 million. The total number of actual jobs sustained directly and indirectly in the New Forest by visitor activity is estimated to be 2,451. Walking at...

...added expenses not to mention the bad effects of these chemicals to health and environment. Dr. Alfredo R. Rabena, head of the Research and Development Office of the University of Northern Philippines in Vigan City, Ilocos, has discovered a solution. He found that the leaves of kakawate tree or Mexican Lilac (Glinicidia sepium) contains coumarins, an effective botanopesticide. To prepare the solution, chop the kakawate leaves and let these soak overnight to extract coumarins. Using a strainer, separate the leaves from the solution. Spray the solution to the ricefields. The best time to apply it is from eight o’ clock to nine o’clock in the morning and from five o’clock to six o’clock in the afternoon as worms and pests are coming out from the leaves at these times. So the solution would be more effective to use. If applied early, it wouldn’t be that effective as pests are still hibernating. And if used when the sun’s heat is too hot, it wouldn’t be that effective also as pest would hide. Since kakawate is a legume, says Rabena, its leaves are rich in nitrogen, an important soil nutrient. Hence, the discarded leaves can be applied to the field as an organic fertilizer. He also recommends fanners to put several leafy branches of kakawate tree in between rice plants two days after planting to prevent pests from attacking the crop. To prove this research finding, Rabena and Flora Cely Rodilias did a demonstration in Naglaoa-an, Sto. Domingo, Ilocus Sur as well as in Vigan City and...

...Asif Chowdhury SC300: Big Ideas in Science Professor: Judy Ikawa Unit 9 11/22/2011 Many of us use the scientific method unconsciously on a daily basis, for work, tasks such as cooking and budgeting. The same elements present in traditional scientific inquiry are present in these everyday examples. Understanding how to apply the scientific method to these seemingly non-scientific problems can be valuable in furthering one's career and in making health-related decision. The scientific method is a process to ask question and answer scientific problem solving by making observation and doing experiments. We can follow the below steps to solve our problem scientifically: Observation This is the first part of scientific method is discovered upon direct observation of what is around us. As a scientist we have to look critically and attempt to avoid all kind if sources and bias in this observation. Ask question The second step in the scientific method is formulated by questions. Ask as many questions as we need to answer. Science can answer many questions, but there are some which cannot be answered by science. Hypothesis The next part of our scientific method is to form a hypothesis. This is simply an educated guess as to the answer for the question. Prediction The prediction is an official way to put a hypothesis to a test. If the test works most likely we are on a right track to solve our problem. If we have carefully designed our hypothesis to be sure it...

They are characterized by the ability to renew themselves through mitotic cell division and differentiate into a diverse range of specialized cell types. Research in the stem cell field grew out of findings by Ernest A. McCulloch and James E. Till at the University of Toronto in the 1960s. The two broad types of mammalian stem cells are: embryonic stem cells that are isolated from the inner cell mass of blastocysts, and adult stem cells that are found in adult...

Bacteria and Parasites By Victor Banks Melanie Crow COM 155 4/2/13 Bacteria and parasites are both specific types of organisms that are able to have affect on a humans body, but parasites have a greater increase in harming a human being rather than a bacteria. While the exact origin of bacteria remains a matter of speculation, it is clear that they are among the oldest and most adaptable organisms on Earth. Over three and a half billion years ago the earth was an inhospitable planet characterized by a landscape of active volcanoes in an atmosphere with hardly any oxygen, as far as we know the first life forms to be on Earth were simple organisms that closely resembled present day bacteria and did not depend on atmospheric oxygen or survival. Eventually in the shallow waters of primitive earth photosynthetic microorganisms...

...Scenario 1: Ask a question: The scientific method is a cycle of observation, developing a hypothesis, experimentation based on the hypothesis, and identifying conclusions. Through successive rounds of the scientific method hypothesis are refined into theorems that can explain our observations. You reach for the switch and the light doesn't come on. What would you do next? Would you try the switch again? Did I flick it all the way first time? Then I would check to see if there was anything wrong with the electricity, by trying to turn on other lights in the house or looking to see if any electrical appliances were working. And so on and so forth until I found out why the light wasn't working. Do background research: The light doesn't come on the first time that I flick the switch. Based on experience I know a few potential causes of this observation, namely: faulty switch, no electricity, or burnt out light bulb. Using this background information I can then form a hypothesis as to why the light bulb didn't come on when I flicked the switch. Hypothesis: The light bulb didn't come on when I turned the switch because the light bulb has burnt out. Experiment: Take the old bulb and test it in a known working socket (at a neighbor's). Experiments should ideally have only two possible outcomes. Either they will support the hypothesis or disprove it. If the light doesn't work at my neighbor’s house then there is something wrong with the bulb. If it does then something else...

...stroking his body. If these were Stubby’s final moments on earth, Conroy wanted to be with him. Exhausted, Conroy dropped off to slumber. When he woke the next morning, the heftily ponderous brindle and white body was lying motionless on the cot. He stared, willing the canine to be alive. But he did not visually perceive the chest elevate and fall. He leaned towards the cot and whispered, “Stubby?” The stubby, heftily ponderous tail beat a rat-tat-tat on the bed. Stubby was alive. He returned to his unit. No German enemy soldiers were able to sneak up on Stubby’s regiment, albeit many endeavored. Stubby was a vigilant sentry who growled or barked if a German came near. When he returned to the U.S. after the Armistice, he was designated a lifetime Honorary Member of the Red Cross and the American Legion. He led more U.S. military parades than any other canine in history. I did extensive research on Stubby while inditing my book, Paws to Protect: Dogs Preserving Lives & Restoring Hope. Since he was a stray, no registration papers were ever found to designate the breed. He holds a proud place in the history of U.S. canines, whether he was American Pit Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier. Stubby went on to a utilizable peacetime job. He was the mascot of Georgetown University's football team, the Hoyas, while Conroy attended law school there. ...

The condition of the houses appear to be in mint condition with the exception of some homes in the area of El Evado and Pacoima that have lawns that are dead and full of weeds. The paint on these homes are chipped and not well kept. There are many apartments in Victorville that appear to look old on the outside, but each apartment building has been renovated to look more twenty first century. There aren't many abandoned houses in the city of Victorville but there abandoned vehicles in front of houses that have oxidized paint and dust covering them. The houses in the neighborhoods are very similar in their layout, the only difference each house has is the color of the paint on outside of the house. Some residents have also added on additions to their homes such as extra rooms or in ground pools, which have raised the equity in these homes. There is one abandoned building that stands out in Victorville and that is because it is in a shopping center that has flourishing businesses within that same parking lot that use to be an Albertsons. This building has been empty for a couple years and is located on Bear Valley and Amargosa. There is a large number of stray dogs in Victorville due to the faulty wooden...

...jokes Abstract Looking back at the history, humorous language and behaviour had been treated as frivolous, ludicrous, and even evil. However, with the development of social civilization, people have gradually realized that humour actually is indispensable for our monotonous and regular life. Humour is embodied in operas, movies, writings, conversations, etc. And the most common type is humorous conversations. In many pragmatics books, lots of humorous conversations can be found, which are employed to analyze pragmatics. So we can see that humour and pragmatics are closely connected. However, papers about humorous language with a pragmatic view are comparatively only a few. Besides, most of them only focus on certain aspects of pragmatics, for example, cooperative principle. Based on the main parts of pragmatics, this paper does a comparatively detailed research on the humorous language in English conversations. At the beginning of the thesis, some popular definitions of humour are compared and a conclusion is made. Then humour is classified into four types and its functions in the social interaction are specified. ...
