Don't Ask Don't Tell I joined the United States Air Force May of 2003 and service to June 2007. I worked in the hospital as a Health Service Management which mostly handles the administration work of the hospital. Doing my time in the military there was a law in the military call the “The Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. This law was passed in 1993 that mandated the military to discharge service man or woman that was openly homosexual or bisexual. I knew of fellow military personals who were homosexual but they were never openly telling a number of people. I knew they were homosexual just because I knew some of their close friends, who I was also close with. When gossiping with these friends they would inform me of different individuals who were homosexual. I also knew of several servicemember who was homosexual and would be open about their sexuality to get out of the military. They would do this because the knew they would be discharge from the military, so that would be an easy way out since they no long wanted to be in. Now let take a look at the history of the law, the changes that will take place, and my opinion on the issues.
1. Now let take a brief look at the past history of homosexual in the military. The Department of Defense from a policy that stated homosexual could not be in military. “According to a 1992 report by the Government Accounting Office (GAO), nearly 17,000 men and women were discharged under the category of homosexuality in the 1980s” (Herek1997- 2010, para. 15). This cause a priority for gay and lesbian advocates to fight for the civil rights of homosexual in the military. In 1992 legislation was introduced in the US Congress to try to overturn the ban. In 1993 President Clinton start working with Secretary of Defense to put a end to the ban on homosexual in the military. President Clinton proposal was meet with a lot of political and public opposition. “After lengthy public debate and congressional hearings, the President and Senator Sam Nunn (D-GA), chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, reached a compromise which they labeled Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue.” (Herek1997- 2010, para. 15) The policy stated a service member could not be asked their sexual orientation and they could not be openly homosexual. If they were open about their sexual orientation they would be discharge or could not come into the military.
During the war for 9/11 the military discharged some military linguists who were openly homosexual. This start the beginning for a new proposal to end the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, once President Obama took office he start the push to end the policy. The end began December 15, 2010, when the House passed a bill 250- 175 to reflect the repeal. Then December 18, 2010 the Senate passed the repeal 65-31. Then onDecember 22, 2010 President Obama signed the bill to end the policy. It is still current policy and the military is work on how to put the bill in affect. I personal do not have any problem with anyone who wants to service their country in the military and they are homosexual. At the same time, I prefer the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. The reason I liked it was because I feel what you do on your time is your business and should be kept separate from work. The reason I stated that was because like any touch subject ever one is not going to feel comfortable so it best to just keep to self to avoid conflict. I do not think the military should discharge them for that, but just let them know it is a touchy subject and shouldn’t be discuss at work similar to how will deal with religion.
In closing the world is changing so more people are accepting to homosexual then how it uses to be. The main thing we should focus on is keep our nation safe and not focusing on people sexual orientation. The only time I honestly have a problem with someone sexual orientation, religion, and any personal thought is when the person try to obligate you to believe in their beliefs. .
