Education Game
The issue with education is not education it’s self but the way the education is being taught. In today’s society most households have a television in a majority of the rooms, internet, computers, Smart cell phone, and video games, have these gadgets be implemented into the process of educating students instead of starting a war between technology and education. Sun-Tzu once said “The best victory is when the opponent surrenders of its own accord before there are any actual hostilities...It is best to win without fighting.” With this quote I see education as being the opponent to the technology that is taking the attention of children from education. Bring in the technology and use it to teach, Education should surrender the old ways of teaching and bring in a new way with technology being an ally.
There are people out there that are against this idea of the students playing games in class because video games are harmful to the brain. I am going to tackle that one right here and now with saying that in my research I have found both positive and negative things about the affects video games have on the brain and the physical body.
According to Patricia Wolfe in her book brain matters 2nd edition she states “well-designed educational Video Games can be natural teachers by focusing on critical skills, providing immediate feedback and adapting to the individual learners, and providing opportunities to practice to the point of mastery.” (Wolfe 103) in his book “The Educated Parent: Child rearing in the 21st century” Joseph Sclafani states that Video games also can help transfer knowledge or skills to the real world. Gamers repeat actions as they play, and repetition is one precondition for long-term potentiation—the strengthening of brain-cell connections through repeated use that is thought to underlie memory storage and learning.(166) To cite a

Video Games: an Innovative Approach to Education

...Hayes 1 Kimberly Hayes GLS 502-800 Ashley Hudson April 23, 2013 Video Games: An Innovative Approach to Education Ten years ago, I’d have scoffed if I heard video games and education used in the same sentence, and I know a lot of other parents who would still have a similar reaction. In more recent years, however, I’ve been forced to change my opinion, and the person who influenced the change the most is, of all people, my children’s pediatrician, Dr. Jim Poole, the founder of Growing Child Pediatrics in Wake Forest, N.C. Having two children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) isn’t easy in the educational environment present in schools today, and through Dr. Poole’s work with my children, I have come to understand that the reason for the difficulty is that traditional curriculums that teachers have to work with aren’t flexible enough to allow them to tailor to children with learning differences. So what does this have to do with video games? A LOT. Video games have the potential to break down educational barriers that exist in the traditional classroom by providing alternative learning approaches that cater to kids with ADHD and other learning differences, and by building cognitive skills that can help all children succeed in the classroom. When I first discovered that my oldest child might have ADHD from his eighth grade teachers, they all told me that he needed medication before entering high school. I didn’t like the idea of medicating my child, so I began...

Role of Management Games in Enhancing Quality of Education

...learning from management games is gathered whenever games are used as an educational tool. In past years, many business schools have been working on for changes in the way of teaching: like real life applications, case studies, making them experience real challenges in business, which all can be explained as “Learning by Doing”. Teaching itself is opening ways for students like the World Wide Web, distance education, end user learning and cooperative learning. The objective behind a management game is to offer students the opportunity to learn by doing in as reliable a management situation as possible and to engage them in a simulated experience of the real world. Management games give students a relaxed and fun filled environment. Students learn and practice from new challenges faced in management games and get the opportunity to use them in a non-stressful way. Games are also motivating in the sense they introduce an element of competition and the competitive ambience makes them concentrate and think intensively during the learning process, also making them mentally strong. Students who have experienced games oriented activities hold an optimistic attitude for them. Overall, this process involves Games are also motivating. Role of Play in Child Development

...suffer a serious decline. The demise of play will certainly have serious consequences for children and for the future of childhood itself. Parents, teachers and mental health professionals alike, are expressing concern about children who do not play. Some seem blocked and unable to play. Others long to play, but policies and practices at home and in school have driven open ended, self directed play out of their lives. Children no longer have the freedom to explore wood and fields and find their own special places. Informal neighbourhood games are a thing of the past as children are headed into athletic leagues at increasingly younger ages. Increasingly children find themselves in school settings which feature scripted teachings, computerised learning and standardised assessment. Physical education and recess are being eliminated. New schools are being built without playgrounds. While allegedly these approaches are providing quality education, they trivialize and undermine children’s natural capacities for meaningful and focused life lessons through creative play and this leaves many children profoundly alienated from their school experiences. Role of play There are various roles of play in the children’s development today. This is...

...who play less time than that are called non-addicts. Which will focus on the specific players in a game called World of Warcraft. This game is a very popular game worldwide with over 5000 people playing at any given time (Cronin 113-147). Its popularity is one of the reasons why people are getting addicted to it. Gamers are all the time looking for new and interesting games and as they find something new they started playing and telling their friends and family about it. In this way those people themselves get obsessed of games as well as they make others overwhelmed with the interest of gaming. I would define this group of players as a culture because they have their own way of life that is very different from anything one is, they spend much of their time in gaming which is no more than a way to get busy. And this activity does not mean anything useful. In addition at one point these 5000 players are playing then a sort of a social group of their own. Some of my songs are complete addicts and play this game at least 8 hours a day without worrying about college, sleep or work. These people have no friends and not have any food because they are busy playing Warcraft all day (Mayra 45-113). We think that it will be a great joy to research attitude of this culture. I wonder what makes them behave as they do. Why are they willing to give all friends, food and education only a game that probably will be out of the stores in 2 months? Limbo as a Game for Learning

...Shane O’Donnell 9/26/2013 TA-Rex Beaber LIMBO AS A GAME FOR LEARNING Limbo is a modern black & white computer game that has the player traveling through an expansive two dimensional wasteland in search of the character’s sister. Along this journey, the character stumbles into obstacle after obstacle, preventing him from moving forward. These obstacles serve as puzzles for the player to solve. If the player does not solve these puzzles, then the character is stuck in the same spot, likely dying over and over. This game uses real concepts from physical sciences, such as pendulums and gravity, to push the player to critically think about how to solve the puzzles presented to them. Limbo does a good job at engaging the user into learning by principles of problem solving such as: sandbox, pleasantly frustrating, and well-ordered problems. Video games, to the general public, aren’t generally accepted as tools to engage the player in learning. The image of a gamer to most is no better than an obese man with unkempt hair and a bag of potato chips sitting on his couch/computer chair all day. Though this really isn’t the case, gamers comes in all kinds of appearances, it can be easy to see why people think this. The amount of time some people spend on their gaming devices is pretty haunting. Some people near 20 hours per day gaming, which is slightly superhuman. Though this is at a far extreme, what we see from this is engagement. What other activities do people want to do for...

Good game ideas might be common, but good development teams are rare; the publisher will want to see evidence that you have the resources and experience to get the job done. It has already expended many hours of my life and none of those hours have been regretted. A love of video games can be the catalyst in bringing a group of people together--people who have nothing in common with one another can sit down and have fun while playing together in a game. ...the company image? Perhaps it has some education value? This game may be for young teenagers or even younger, 8-13 years of age. As the young adults or older generation are too busy to be playing games and the colours are bright to attract attention to the young kids, and the game isn’t made that hard as the young people may be bored. ...just shut down - they don't see the point of playing when they have no chance of winning. I decided to make a list of things I think are good and bad (my pros and cons) about competition in the class. And then accordingly, I would decide whether it's a good idea for a given situation or not such a great plan for the lesson. Pros: 1. Most kids really enjoy the "game" aspect of a competition. Fun = good for learning. 2. This is a great way to get the students to actively participate in the class. They get really involved, and just from the involvement they learn more than they would have by sitting and just passively listening. 3. Great for the bright and fast kids. If they're usually on the border of boredom, a game / competition will get them motivated to start thinking again. 4. Lets students have a sense of success. 5. If done in groups, can really develope comradeship with the other team members. 6. Some students work best under pressure. Competition is the perfect source of pressure. 7. Works better for older kids. Younger kids seem to take things very personally, and cannot distinguish between playing a game and reality. Cons: 1. Not so great for the weaker students. If a student finds himself among intellectual superiors, they will either not participate or else get frustrated with the competition and possibly the subject itself. 2. Not...

...opposing team or code words to play dirty on the line of scrimmage. These situations really took all of the fun out of the game and caused players to choose other extracurricular activities the following season. Even as a huge sports fanatic I agree with Statsky’s thoughts when she states, “Before children are psychologically ready for competition, maybe we should emphasize cooperation and individual performance in team sports rather than winning.” Children seek approval and praise from their elders on an everyday basis and when held to a high standard are not receiving this. I have seen numerous individuals upset with their children for coming in second place at a track meet or not making it to state at a wrestling tournament. These children are giving their all but being held to an adult or professional athlete standard. As soon as the whistle blows and the game begins, all fun and camaraderie go out the window. Jessica Statsky exclaims that, “Children are easily influenced, and when they sense that their competence and worth are based on their ability to live up to their parents’ and coaches’ high expectations-and on their ability to win-they can become discouraged and depressed.” I fully support this statement and believe it to be very true. Many children are becoming discouraged and depressed because of adult expectations. What happened to the love of the game and being able to...
