So Much in So Few Words Edward Estlin Cummings notably studied at Harvard University, earning his BA and MA. There he met Ezra Pound, a distinguished imagist. Although not officially classified in a school of poetry, the poems by E.E. Cummings here are all imagery poems as well. The relationship E.E. Cummings and Ezra Pound had proved constructive to both, because for years after Harvard, the two poets corresponded about their poetry. Their friendship undoubtedly influenced both poets’ works. Each of E.E. Cummings’ poems here focuses on a single moment of a small scene. In addition to being poems of imagery, each includes experimental arrangements of letters, words, and punctuation that present an intricate, deeper meaning.

Cummings planned. This poem, like the first three, looks like gibberish, but when deciphered, reveals an elaborate interpretation. “r-p-o-p-h-e-s-s-a-g-r” starts as a permutation of “grasshopper.” Lines 1 through 4 are spaced evenly and in all lowercase letters that offer an air of paced relaxation. Suddenly, in line 5, the permutation of “grasshopper” is in all capital letters, suggesting excitement. The tight spacing of contrasting lower and uppercase letters, the large spacing of words, as well as exclamation points gives the image of a little thing excitedly hopping up and falling down. Line 12’s permutation of “grasshopper” is partially in capitals and lower case letters. Perhaps the excitement of a hop is wearing off and the little grasshopper is resting after its hops. Shortly after, the poem’s conclusion settles the grasshopper with the explanation “to (be)(com)(e) ,grasshopper;.” Aside from the action of a grasshopper hopping, there is a deeper meaning behind the progression of this poem. At the start, the word “grasshopper” is misarranged and therefore not defined as anything concrete. The body of the poem showcases the excitement of something happening to the “r-p-o-p-h-e-s-s-a-g-r.” At the very end of the poem, the “r-p-o-p-h-e-s-s-a-g-r” has been defined as a grasshopper from the excitement that was it hopping. To get this much meaning out of assortments of letters arranged on a page is astounding and hopefully only intentional through Cummings’

...E.E. Cummings, born on October 14, 1894, was a man who loved writing prose, poetry, and plays as well as painting. He spent his life, which encompassed two world wars, learning from other poets and applying his writing skills to make texts interesting for society. In Just By Ee Cummings Diction

...E. E. Cummings is very unique in the way that he applies syntax and diction to his poem, “In Just-.” “Mud-luscious” and “puddle-wonderful,” are just a few of the word choices that Cummings chooses to describe the setting of spring. These words not only roll off the tongue but also create a repeated sound and image. The repeated sounds are the -uh sounds in mud-luscious and the -d and -l sounds in puddle-wonderful. These are also known as cacophonic sounds and an alliteration which repeats certain sounds within a phrase. The recurring image within these two fun phrases is the image of rain, mud and puddles. ...“anyone lived in a little how town” ee cummings • non-conformity • form = function o Poe’s unity of effect o poem = unique, does not conform to any poetic standards, grammatical rules, expectations • songs: o Justice & Independence, Jack & Diane (JC Mellencamp) o The Dance, The River (Garth Brooks) E. E. Cummings' "anyone lived in a pretty how town" tells the story of anyone. The name has a double meaning; anyone could be anyone in the dictionary definition sense, and could be seen as a singular entity, reinforcing the theme of isolation the independent individual has from the rest of society. The events all occur in a "pretty how town". "Pretty" connotes a mere façade, describing the superficiality of the town's inhabitants. "How", an adverb, is used as an adjective here. It could be describing the extent of the town's prettiness, but a better reason is that it describes the routine humdrum of the town's activities, since "how" also means "in a method or manner". The juxtapositions continue into the next line, "(with up so floating many bells down)". The rhythm of the line and the vowels emulate both the motion and the sounds of bells. This line occurs again later in the poem, and its function here is the same as it is there - to signify the passing of time. The next line is an ordered list of the seasons, also symbolizing the passing of time, describing anyone's activities as occurring continuously. The activities...

The Story Behind the Song "American Woman."

...The song "American Woman" was written and recorded by the Canadian rock group The Guess Who, originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The song was written in January, 1970, at a time when many countries, led by the United States, were fighting a war in Vietnam. The communists of North Vietnam had invaded South Vietnam and neighboring countries, promoting communism. Many Americans were opposed to the war. The story behind how American Woman was written is unusual. The band was performing at a club called the Broom & Stone which was actually a curling rink. According to Burton Cummings, the lead singer and song writer, the show was stopped because Randy Bachman broke a string on his guitar. As he was retuning his instrument, he played the notes which eventually became the opening riff to the song. The other members began playing and Cummings started ad-libbing words to go with the music. He said in an interview in 2013, “I run inside and run up onto the stage and just grab a microphone and started singing whatever came into my head; it was all stream of consciousness at the moment stuff … all that stuff about war machines and ghetto scenes, colored lights can hypnotize …it was all just spur-of-the-moment.” examiner.com/article The audience went wild. Burton noticed that a member of the audience was recording the show and told the band manager to get the tape. Later, they listened to the tape and wrote down the music and lyrics, which was then recorded with only a...

The Perception of Ignorance

...The Perception of Ignorance When it comes to culture and identity ignorance can play an important role between success and failure. The stories below will provide examples of how our ignorance as a society can determine how we perceive others as well as how we are perceived by others. Sonny’s Blues Sonny’s Blues is a short story that illustrates the ignorance of the narrator to his Brother Sonny’s dream of becoming a jazz musician. The narrator thinks that life flows on the ability to just make a living that people do not have to find happiness in working to live. However, this way of thinking is different for Sonny, For example, the narrator says “Well, look, Sonny, I’m sorry, don’t get mad. I just don’t altogether get it, that’s all. Name somebody—you know, a jazz musician you admire.” (Baldwin, 1957, pg.575). Sonny responds with “Bird” (Baldwin, 1957, pg.575) and the narrator responds with “who?” After lighting a cigarette and taking a step back from the conversation, the narrator realizes how out of touch from society he has become. He is shocked and entertained by the fact that his body is trembling. The narrator tells Sonny that he will have to be patient with his ignorance on who Charlie Parker is (Baldwin, 1957, pg.575). This is Sonny’s world through his own eyes and this is what happiness is to him, the culture of jazz playing is his identity. As stated above, Sonny relates to jazz in ways that the narrator cannot understand. The narrator’s ignorance of...

Any One Lived in a Pretty How Town

...about themselves. It’s about the passage of time and the normal things that happens as time goes on. E. E. Cummings portrays the people to be careless as implied in stanza 7. He contrast the people being selfish, line 2, stanza 2 “cared for anyone not at all” with the people being loving, line 2, stanza 4, “she laughed his joy she cried his grief”. There are many different ways to approach this poem. You can figure out the themes and meaning or talk about how Cummings ties nature to the main idea, like how he uses the seasons to make the point that the feelings of the people of the town never change and the passing of time. Lewis Turco found two themes of this poem. His first theme is “how can anyone live in a pretty town” where nothing much goes on, where people worry only about themselves although they are involved with everyone else. His next theme is that people do in fact live in towns like this one where as Turco says, “they are anyone and noone, of no particular significance except to one another on an individual basis; anyone does mean something to noone and mostpeople-both care and do not care; both love and do not love; are important to one another and are not important at all.” These themes contrast and may seem to cancel each other but they do not. They both are true. I tied the theme of nature to the passing of time and how the people never change. E.E. Cummings uses the seasons and the weather to emphasize how people of the “pretty town” feelings. He uses the seasons...

1(a by E.E Cummings

..."l(a" is a poem by E. E. Cummings. It is the first poem in his 1958 collection 95 Poems.[1] "l(a" is arranged vertically in groups of one to five letters. When the text is laid out horizontally, it reads as l(a leaf falls)oneliness —in other words, a leaf falls inserted within the first two letters of loneliness.[2] Robert DiYanni notes that the image of a single falling leaf is a common symbol for loneliness, and that this sense of loneliness is enhanced by the structure of the poem. He writes that the fragmentation of the words "illustrates visually the separation that is the primary cause of loneliness". The fragmentation of the word loneliness is especially significant, since it highlights the fact that that word contains the word one. In addition, the isolated letter l can initially appear to be the numeral one.[3] Robert Scott Root-Bernstein observes that the overall shape of the poem resembles a 1.[4] Further suggestions for interpretation (collected at an English language-class in Germany in the 1980ies, all underlining the “loneliness”) may be: • The “a” in the first line (as indefinite article) represents singularity. • The “le” in the second line is the French equivalent to “the” (again “singularity”). • If the first letters of line 6 to 9 are read downward, they read “soli”, which in Latin means “only”. • e.e. cummings's "L(a". • Measured by sheer boldness of experiment, no American poet compares to him, for he slipped Houdini-like...
