...Perceived Effects of Online Games to the Academic Performances among Students under the College of Business Administration Education at University of Mindanao (UM) Leynard Bangkulit Romeo Dimiao Russel Anthony Junsay Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Background of the Study In 1958, the world’s first world computer game, a rudimentary two-player tennis game, was created to entertain visitors on the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Since then, the computer/video game industry has become one the most aggressively growing business sectors in the United States and in the whole world. Obviously, games are emerging as one of the most dominant forms of entertainment. This trend goes further as of the increasing penetration of high speech Internet connection and the declining prices of computers, video-game consoles, and mobile entertainment devices. (Lee, Jin, Park, & Kang, 2005) As we know, Internet offers many conveniences. As a result it has made many people depend on it. What is worse, a large number of people have become addicted, especially to online game addiction. By2007, the population of online gamers worldwide was about 217 million, approximately 28 percent of the total online population (comScore,2007).In addition, online game addiction is prevalent in many countries, including China, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, U.S., and Canada. In South Korea, 2.4 percent of the population, ages nine to thirty-nine, were believed to be addicted to online games, and over 10 percent...

...My research question is what effects does online gaming have on the components of socialization and gender. I am investigating topics such as online socialization, impact on social life, gender roles, macrostructures, microstructures... From my experience, online gaming tends to destroy or severely damage an individual’s regular social life. Some online gamers prefer to socialize only through the game where the rules are less strict and they are free to act in a way they would not normally be in real society. Online gaming gives gamers a sense of confidence, calm and reassurance because it allows an individual to meet new people without worrying too much about the repercussions of their actions. There is a sense of ambiguity because in the game a person cannot determine who is controlling the other characters whether male or female. Gender roles are not as defined in the online world since you are allowed to choose your character’s gender or sex. This allows people to act out lives that they do not have or be a different person completely separate from the real world. The three journal articles I am using for this literature review are as follows: Video Game Characters and the Socialization of Gender Roles: Young People’s Perceptions Mirror Sexist Media Depictions Dill, Karen E., and Kathryn P. Thill. "Video Game Characters and the Socialization of Gender Roles: Young People's Perceptions Mirror Sexist Media Depictions." Sex Roles 57.11-12 (2007): 851-64. ProQuest. Web. 9 Oct...

Contributor Network http://voices.yahoo.com/the-real-world-effects-online-gaming-socially-inept-3255207.html With the technology of a civilization becoming more and more advanced, the people demand that their entertainment become more advanced as well. After a long hard day at work or school, people like to come home to relax and just lose their mind in meaningless entertainment, be it television or even a video game. Video games provide an escape into a virtual world, where you can forget about everything that is happening in real life and just enjoy yourself, even play with your friends in a multiplayer game. In the past, for a group of video game players to play multiplayer games, it was necessary for them to all be together and all their computers or Xboxes connected to one another. Not only were they just playing a game, they were interacting on a personal level. Now with online gaming becoming a component of most every video game on the market today, it is possible for gamers to have this same multiplayer action in the privacy of their own home. This anonymity comes with a cost however, and it is becoming increasingly common that both the social aspect of gaming and the gamers' social skills themselves are degrading as online gaming becomes more prevalent. One of the dangers that society faces from video games is their...

...INTRODUCTION Video games have come a long way since today's adults sat down at a computer to play Pong or Donkey Kong. The newest-generation gaming consoles are as powerful as personal computers, and can accomplish many of the same things. And today's games are increasingly realistic and technologically advanced. Social networking has even made its way into the video game industry with online gaming. These virtual worlds can be complicated and perplexing to parents, which is why it's important for you to understand what your child is playing and when to get worried. Did You Know? * In 2009, over 11 million people played World of Warcraft, an online, subscription fee-based multiplayer game. * According to one study, nearly 1 in 10 young gamers displayed behavior patterns similar to addiction.1 * The Kaiser Family Foundation found that 8- to 18-year-olds are exposed to an average of 10 hours and 45 minutes of media each day. Whether your child is an avid gamer or rarely picks up a controller, it's important to understand the world of video games--especially in the age of online gaming--so you can make your child's experience with games both a positive and a beneficial one. ————— 1. Is there significant relationship between playing online games and academic performance of the student Hypothesis Playing online games have large bad effects to the academic performance of students of College of Business Administration Education at University of Mindanao. Review of Related Literature Online Games/ Video Games Playing video games is often associated in our society with poor academic performance. This anecdotal idea is supported by some research. A 2000 study found a negative correlation between GPA and time spent playing video games (Anderson & Dill, 2000). The correlation was relatively small. Time alone accounted for a 4% variance in GPA, yet the findings are significant. However, several older studies contend that the results of research have been mixed. A 1997 study suggests that “there is no clear causal relationship between video game playing and academic performance” (Emes, 1997, p. 413). It goes on to say that the research is “sparse and contradictory” (Emes, 1997, p. 413). The effect that interactive digital media has on the learning process is not completely...

...Chapter I THE PROBLEM Introduction Millions of people play online games around the world, in April 2013 it was estimated that 671 million people worldwide played online games. Almost a quarter of these individuals did so on a daily basis and that number as a percentage of total online gamers continue to grow (comScore, 2013). An online game is a video game played over some forms of computer network, using a personal computer or video game console typically on the Internet. This network is usually the Internet or any equivalent technology; but games have always used whatever technology was current: modems before the Internet, and hard wired terminals before modems. One advantage of online games is the ability to connect to multiplayer games in which thousands of people can participate in a shared world and can return to that world day after day to see it grows and changes in response to one’s own actions, although single-player online games are quite common as well. A second advantage of online games is that a great percentage of games do not require payment. Third, that is worth noting, is the availability of a wide variety of games for all types of game players. While it may be true that online games are perceived to have advantages to players, their effect on behavior is worth looking into. As defined by McLeod (2008), human behavior is experienced throughout an individual’s entire lifetime. It includes the way they act based on different factors such as genetics, social...

...Video Game Addiction Symptoms, Causes and Effects Although it is not yet recognized by the American Medical Association as a diagnosable disorder, video game addiction is a very real problem for many people. According to the University of New Mexico, recent studies suggest that 6 to 15 percent of all gamers exhibit signs that could be characterized as addiction. Though this disorder can have significant consequences to those suffering from it, its signs and symptoms can sometimes be very difficult to recognize. Are There Different Types of Video Game Addictions? There are two major types of video games and therefore two major types of video game addictions. Standard video games are generally designed to be played by a single player and involve a clear goal or mission, such as rescuing a princess. ...Video Gaming Addiction and its Effects on Job Performance, Interpersonal Social Interaction, and Marriages Western Governors University Video Gaming Addiction and its Effects Within society there are several addictions that plague us and are mainly associated with substance abuse. There are addictions to drugs, alcohol, food and multiple others that are too numerous to list. However, within this century we have seen the rise of video game addiction among the young, the old, male and female. Video game addiction is related to other underlying disorders such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, other anxiety disorders, and impulse control disorders (Oggins, 2012). The American Medical Association has considered adding this addiction to their manual of mental disorders (Northrup, 2014). There have been several studies on the addiction to video gaming. These studies correlate the negative effects of excessive time spent playing video games with the associated risks that result from this behavior. Research shows that video gaming has become one of the new addictions of the 21st Century due to the loss of interpersonal social interaction, negative effects on job performance, and the debilitating effects on marriages or relationships. Video game addiction is a direct result of the great leaps that we have made in technology.
