However there are other matters that create a balance for us, a balance that makes us live through all of these hardships. Such matters are love, friendship, hope, peace, faith, family, and so on. The most important focus is family since having a mother and a father beside you makes you stronger and makes you feel safe, and for our parents we are their entire lives. We give them a purpose to be hard workers and we make them want to be strong so that we stay strong too. Family deviate our minds from all the problems in this world. It is like a unit, we focus on each other and on our happiness. Unfortunately, some people are deprived from this blessing. They cannot have a family due to medical reasons. Such medical reason is a woman having a hostile uterus therefore proper implantation of the zygote cannot occur and thus no pregnancy can occur either. Repeated attempts to get pregnant will lead to the same result, the mother will suffer from recurrent abortion or premature labor. Another reason is if the intended mother suffers from severe heart problems, kidney or respiratory diseases, unstable diabetes, or severe high blood pressure the pregnancy will endanger her life. Those who do not support gestational surrogacy justify their positing by citing that there were cases where the surrogacy turned out to be a failure. In fact surrogacy has indeed created troubles for some couples and their surrogate. The first issue to rise is choosing the surrogate mother. Agencies are used to help the couple choose their candidate, but for a fee of course. This fee is very expensive. It costs them thousands of dollars to cover all the medical requirements. In case the couple has gone through extensive counseling, they decided on whom the surrogate mother is, and the surrogacy took place what if the couple could not continue on paying what will the surrogate do? This has happened in several cases where the surrogate mother is only interested in the money and does not want to go through with this pregnancy and eventually perform abortion. Nothing illegal can be held on her, the baby will be lost and the parents will have spent so much time and money and lost a baby that they have had for a small period of time which will cause them more misery and pain.
The surrogate mother should provide all the conditions necessary for the baby. She has to have a caring motherly attitude and be unselfish and a loving person. It involves a great deal of sacrifices and stress. Being a surrogate mother is not easy and basically not everybody can handle this position. Becoming a surrogate mother affects the woman’s life drastically and she needs to reach deep down her soul and be sure that she’s ready. She should lie in bed for months, not go through emotional stress and depressions, stop smoking and drinking. As a conclusion she should be a fulltime mother. A lot of surrogate mothers do not apply these conditions. They smoke from time to time, drink as well, and do not want to lie in bed but go out instead and risk causing the baby sickness and health problems. There are couples who would not accept a baby with health problems and will not want the baby. This will lead to many legal problems between the couple and the surrogate mother, but most importantly the life of the baby will be completely ruined. Some surrogates cannot handle the symptoms that the pregnancy will bring on her and eventually turn to abortion.
The surrogate mother’s health plays one of the biggest roles to ensure that she is eligible to carry a baby. Factors regarding her health will include issues like: having a long time illnesses that may be of hindrance to carry the pregnancy to term, her general health, a good reproductive history in her family back ground, and if she experience any complications during deliveries.
What if the agency did not do a good job in studying the profile of the woman? Not all agencies can be trusted and not all agencies are in it for the good of unfortunate parents. It has been argued that surrogacy may exploit women from a more economically disadvantaged background. They are only interested in the money this all brings them. They will be condemning the couple to a failed operation and giving them a false hope. They might also be condemning the child to a life of sickness and suffering.
This type of procedure may lead the surrogate mother to carry more than one baby. Some surrogate mothers gave birth to 5 and 6 babies. How will the parents be able to take care of these children and raise them having paid a large amount of money for the surrogacy to take place.
I agree that surrogacy has many complications and can cause problems, but I do not believe that it should not be legalized since it is very helpful for countless unfortunate couple unable to have babies. These couples go through a lot of pain and suffering and all of this can be forgotten by having a surrogate mother. The mother will not leave any test unperformed. She will go from doctor to doctor, from clinic to clinic to find a way to have what she longs her, her baby. This issue will immensely affect the mother’s psychological state. Depression is the most dangerous symptom that will be faced. The incapability of having a baby will create a negative environment for the couple leading to many problems and an unwanted way of life. The couple’s parents will also be a very stressful factor for they also dream of having grandchildren. Therefore surrogacy is the only way that the couple can have their baby carrying their own genes and traits. Surrogacy is the only solution that can bring real happiness and joy to the entire family and household.
Surrogate mothers should be well informed of all her rights before deciding to become a surrogate. Therefore, seeking legal counsel is a necessity. The lawyer will assist the surrogate in defining her right, before signing any document. It is important for the surrogate to be knowledgeable of not only her rights but the rights of the intended couple as well. Once the contract is agreed upon and signed, a lot of the surrogate’s privacy will be diminished. The biological mother will be privileged to accompany the surrogate to all her medical appointments and she will be present when certain examinations are done. Surrogate contracts are a bit technical. Individuals will be forced to really understand the laws that are related to a given contract to be very sure of what it holds. The laws of the country in question may lay down the rights of all the individuals involved. There must be a proper condition of the tasks that are expected to be performed by any of the individuals in the contract. The contract should specify clearly when the payments are due. There are payments that will cover for the surrogate mother’s expenses including hospital bills, upkeep during the time of pregnancy and immediately after, and others. This way both parties will avoid any legal problems. The payment that surrogate mothers take is more than acceptable. These surrogates need the money to buy maternity clothes, their hernia belts, pads and medications needed during and after the delivery. This money ensures that the surrogate can provide all what is necessary for the baby.
We can all agree that the baby to be delivered is the biological child of the intended mother and father and whether the child were to be conceived by the real mother he or she would not be but the same child with the same looks and same genes. The child carries their genes, traits, family history of diseases, and everything from the good and the bad. Why shouldn’t surrogacy be legalized then? If both the surrogate and the intended parents are protected by the contract and laws they’ve set nothing can go wrong and the couple will have a family. When surrogacy takes place under all the necessary requirements: suitable surrogate mother and well placed contracts; there is no reason to act against it for it is the greatest gift that anyone could give to a person.
Fighting surrogacy will cause misery to a lot of people. With them knowing that there is a solution for their problem, but not being able to go through with it due to some negative reactions towards this matter will only cause more problems and let the issue reach a higher degree. On the other hand giving surrogacy the green light with no conditions might also lead to unwanted problems. Surrogacy should be treated as a very delicate matter. It needs great devotion and awareness to be able to achieve its purpose of making miracles happens. Do not let our human nature corrupt what is meant to bring us life and happiness.
