...Environmental and Economic Impact Assessment By Lori Wiley May 16, 2016 Eco/370 In Chapter 11 a narrow strip of land that is considered rainforest country is discussed. This land is known as the Tongass National Forest. Due to it being so scarce and the cutting of trees for timber, it poses a great threat compared to the tropical rainforests. This forest was once untouched and preserved. Over recent years and decades land has been converted into private land and owned by the state of Alaska. President Clinton put the Roadless Area Conservation Rule in force to protect nearly one-third of the 192 million acres in the national forest system, nationwide (B.C Field, 2013). The Bush administration promised to uphold the rule when elected. However, the Bush administration lied and withdrew it. This left 9.3 million acres without protection. This puts much of the heart of Alaska's rainforest, once again, back on the chopping block (B.C Field, 2013). The big ancient tree forest is a big target to the logging companies. These big trees provide much needed shelter to wildlife living within the forest. The timber industry is tearing out the heart of the Tongass Rainforest. The problem with logging is it is somewhat economic. Logging on private and public lands has been heavily subsidized, and industry's plan has been to log the best of the forest first, then the best of what is left. About half of forest covered with big trees and two-thirds of the biggest-tree stands have been...

...Environmental Toxin Essay Carbon is the spine on which all life is supported and is easily one of the most abundant and versatile elements in existence. Carbon is one of the most abundant elements in the human body, second only to oxygen; without it, neither humans, nor any other living thing could exist. Every living thing is dependent on carbon, so why is it that the difference of one little molecule of oxygen can be so deadly? If carbon dioxide is being expelled from our bodies twenty four hours a day, why is it that carbon monoxide can literally take us out of the rat race? Is that one little oxygen molecule really that important? You can bet your grandmother's nickers it is. Carbon dioxide is the natural bi product of human respiration and although prolonged exposure or inhalation can be harmful, it is rarely fatal; while carbon monoxide results from an incomplete combustion of carbon based matter due to an inadequate supply of oxygen (Prockop, Chichkova). Carbon monoxide is known as the silent assassin; it is odorless, colorless, tasteless, and for a while after exposure it will not be irritating. The gas is readily inhaled, just as any other gas and unless you are in the presence of some method of detecting it, you would never know it was there. As little as 50 parts per million of carbon monoxide is toxic to humans, but significant exposure can be fatal and the symptoms associated with carbon monoxide poisoning arise after a decent amount of exposure and time...

...COMM 170 Name: NIKESH KUMAR (300811080) Fall 2013 Noble award winner, Politician, philanthropist and much more(3) Mr. AL Gore’s master piece “The Moment Of Truth” and the Canada’s own Cree playwright and novelist’s dazzling yet bitter truthful essay “what a certain visionary once said” are a hard one to compare and comment on. Though both highway’s and gore’s introductory and concluding paragraphs are effective and persuasive, both of them use a different vocabulary style. Firstly, Highway’s introduction is very descriptive which paints an image in our mind (readers).whereas gore’s introduction in “The Moment of Truth” is effective because of providing scientific data to prove we are in a crisis and about criticism of the former president of the united states Mr. George Bush’s irresponsiveness to the number of environmental issues. Highway’s introductory paragraph is catchier because he use a descriptive way of narration which he gained from his real life experiences on the beauties of his countryside’s landscapes. (2) Highway’s description of the landscapes of northern Canada paints a beautiful image in the reader’s mind. The words used to represent the beauty of the landscape. And also Al Gore’s introductory paragraph in “The moment of truth,” is also equally effective. He starts off with letting the readers about the big crisis we about experience. He makes it even more interesting by explaining the meaning of crisis in Chinese and the characters’ meaning...

...Valerie Vasquez Professor Thompson ENG101 January 28, 2015 Reading Response: Spriggs 1. In the essay “On Buying Local” Katherine Spriggs makes it clear that this topic matters to her. She did convince me to start thinking about buying locally, not only did she mention on pg. 96 that it is a healthier and environmental choice, but it also helps small farmers around the valley to grow. 2. A counter argument that Spriggs put in this essay was that the Professor in Wyoming that she mentions in paragraph 10 pg. 98 that if people were to buy locally that would be bad towards people because food can be produced cheaper somewhere else. She fought back with the statement that although it would be more expensive than buying “industrially grown” products that it is also better for the environment to buy locally. 3. In paragraph 8 pg. 96 I like the fact that Spriggs stated that buying locally is eco-friendly and that it would reduce the high cost of fuel and energy used to transport food across the world. That is definitely effective because that will make readers see that she did some research and she knows that it would help in the long run. 4. Sprigg’ photos contributes to the essay because in each paragraph she talks about something different having to do with buying locally. She includes some local farmers’ products and some pictures to show readers a visual perspective in what she is saying and to back up her information....
