...Essay: The Happiest Day of Your Life Life changing decisions isn’t easy, especially not when somebody wants to make them for you and not guide you. Your future is entirely decided by someone else. When silence seems like it couldn’t be any louder and nobody takes notice. This will be my interpretation of the novel named The Happiest Day of Your Life by Penelope Lively. The novel is written in third person narrative, an example of that would be in the beginnig when the narrator describes the setting the boy and his family are in. We hear about the characters different actions and feelings but the narrator doesn’t comment on them, which makes it omniscient without comments. The narrator describes Charlie directly in the beginning of the novel, where the mother is described through her comments and behavior. Modes that are used are direct and indirect conversations and descriptions of different settings. The novel takes place in St. Edward’s Preparatory School in the suburbs of London. The novel begins and ends in the car. The parents are very excited and the atmosphere in the car is quite tense. It differs from Charlie to the parents. Charles doesn’t seem to care much about the interview, since he doesn’t say a word. On the other hand his parents talk a lot about the headmaster and the school. The mother even says “I could do with a drink. Hope they lay something on” (p. 61, 10). It seems like she wants to relieve some of her nerves throughout the interview. The atmosphere...

...Equality = Happiness? I am in my essay going to write about equality and happiness. I will mainly focus on the UK and the US. I am going to discuss if happiness and longevity go hand in hand and I will furthermore discuss whether happiness and equality goes hand in hand. To do this, I would have to have some background material, and therefore I have brought the two texts “Denmark: The Happiest Place on Earth” and “Some more equal than others” from the book Aware of the World. First, though, I would like to briefly sum up the two texts. The first text, “Denmark: The Happiest Place on Earth”, is about some studies that shows that the people of Denmark consider themselves some of the happiest people on earth. Some of the main points in the text are, that it doesn’t matter whether you are a garbage man or a lawyer, just as long as you are happy. The second text, “Some more equal than others”, is about the fact that wealth doesn’t always go hand in hand with equality as US and UK are some of the richest countries in the world, but also some of the countries in the world with most inequality. So, here we are. The million-dollar question of the evening. Does equality and happiness go hand in hand? Do any of these aforementioned points go hand in hand at all? Some might say. Some even say, that happiness complements longevity and gives you a richer life. And of course it does – doesn’t it? I think that if you are happy, and like the way, your life has formed it self, you will live...

...about happiness. Happiness is an activity of some sort which is chosen for its own sake and is self-sufficient. Actions according to virtue are chosen for their own sake. Happiness is not found in amusement, for it would be absurd to argue that the goal of a person's life and work is amusement. Rather, amusement is chosen for the purpose of relaxation, which is necessary to enable a person to engage in serious work. Everything is thought to be chosen for the sake of something else except for happiness. A happy life is a life according to virtue. Section 7: Since it has already been established [in Book One] that happiness is an activity according to virtue, it is reasonable to posit that it is an activity according to the highest virtue, which would be an activity corresponding to the best part of man. The activity of the intellect is the best human activity, since it corresponds to the highest part of man, is concerned with the best objects, is the most continuous activity, is self-sufficient, and is loved for its own sake. Everything attributed to a blessed man seems to exist in the activity of the intellect, which is contemplation. A life of contemplation, then, would be the perfect happiness for man. Such a life is above man, for it is...

...military I am required to be deploy to various sub bases within and without the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Thus, my interview took place on Walderick Wells, a Cay located in the Exuma Land and Sea Park. I had known Ms. Roker, little under two weeks and was intrigue as to why she choose the Bahamas to work instead of America. Every morning she would open the park office and we would start a casual conservation. Her views on life were astounding and to see how her dog Grace interacts with her is just amazing. She always seemed very happy whenever I saw her and always was giving. When I think of what happiness looks like I always think of her. My second choice is Mr. D Bonaby. He is between the ages of 40-50 years and is an active member in the military. He has been deployed to the same sub base as me and he has been my superior for the past 10 years. He is a welder in the military and hopes to open his welding business when he retires from the military. This is the first time we are working hand in hand and he seems content with what he has accomplish in life. He always has a humorous side which never takes a break. ...Stephen Tran Professor John Clanton English 1A 24 March 2015 What is happiness? What is happiness? For some people it is the Mocha Frappucino from Starbucks™ that they have every single morning, some it is the moment their first child is born, and to me, well like most people, have not quite figured that out yet. In Eric Weiner’s eye-opening novel, The Geography of Bliss, Weiner travels to each corner of the earth to try and figure out what really makes people happy, why, and if there really is a science behind it. As Americans, our point of view of other countries is somewhat clouded due to how involved we are with our own but we cannot deny that we are not the happiest country in the world. What makes our country so unhappy? That question is as difficult to answer as what makes certain people and places happy because it can depend on so many factors. We, as citizens of the United States have many things we can improve upon to raise our happiness levels and also we can learn from other countries that are happier than us and in some cases, the ones that are not. For example, we value what kind of toppings we want on our ice cream while children in Africa struggle with feeding their families and themselves. Has our live of luxury made us opaque to what can truly enlighten us and help us achieve happiness? America is known as “A Big, Fat, Stupid Nation”, one writer from the media site Huffingtonpost.com literates. Without going into details about the article we can...

...Steve Jobs 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech Analysis Essay In his speech, Jobs explores the crucial role of failure in finding success, specifically in the situations when he shows that it takes hard work, deliberate practice, and the ability to learn from failure and to persevere. The first point that Jobs makes, is that to be successful, you have to work hard. During the commencement speech, Jobs shares that, “If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do,” (7). Though Jobs admits to having dropped out of the class he was originally attending and ‘dropping in’ on a new one the decision he made was one that, in the long run, furthered his career. By making the decision, and putting in the work to go through the calligraphy class, Jobs ended up creating the future of typefaces on the personal computer. By putting himself and his career on the line, Jobs tells the Stanford graduating class of 2005, “Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future,” (8). Jobs let his actions decide his fate for his career, and at the time, he didn’t know that the decisions he was making would land him where it did. It took years of hard work for him to get to where he ended up, at the top of an internationally known company. Jobs later went on to say, “We worked...

...Essay # 3 Music is a universal language that transcends boundaries and bond people even thousands of miles apart (Universal). Being a musician, words are not needed when composing a song. Music is understood by all cultures with or without the use of words. Having musical intelligence means one understands the significance of music and can display it through the production of a beautiful sound. Musicianship is a form of art which allows the expression of emotions and explores your personal skills in creativity and hard work. As a young child, I always found myself interested in the sounds of jazz music. The melodies and harmonies of the wood wind family appeased my mind to ease. In my earlier teenaged years, I would begin to explore the Clarinet. At this time, my band director felt this was the best fit for me. As it was, I went on to become the best player in the band. To be totally honest with you, I had imagined myself playing the trumpet for quite some time. About three years later, I found myself wanting to play in the Jazz Band. Being that the Clarinet wasn’t a Jazz instrument, I taught myself how to play the Saxophone, this was about three years after I learned how to play the Clarinet. It only took me a month to learn the Saxophone and I was now ready to play in the Jazz Band. I was announced to have been the best Tenor Saxophone player and one of the top Saxophonists in the band. I then took my talents even further and began teaching others how to...

...Journal, which is only published in the Western countries, we can assume that her readers must be western people; mostly western parents. Her circumstances for writing this article, was that she wrote a book about how to raise your children, which she got a lot of criticism for, and then she wrote this article, because she wanted to explain and defend herself. One of her intentions with writing this article is to inform and explain why Chinese parents are raising their kids, as they do. Another intention is to defend the Chinese way of upbringing their children. At last, she wants to contrast Chinese parenting and Western parenting and explain how and why Chinese parenting, in her opinion, is more effective. A way to get the author’s attention across is by using anaphora. Numerous times throughout the essay Chua repeats “By contrast…” at the beginning of a sentence. By this, she is making it very clear, that there is a great difference between the Western and Chinese way of parenting. This is an effective move, because the reader is constantly reminded that these two types of parenting are not comparable in Chua’s mind. We also experience a repetition in terms of actions of the author. It seems like there is a cycle of Chinese parenting in Chua’s life. She raised her...
