I have taken several assessments such as this one over the years but I have never done one based on how it relates to my job. I was identified as an ENFJ type personality and was analyzed as a moderately expressed extravert; distinctively expressed intuitive personality; distinctively expressed feeling personality; and very expressed judging personality.
For the most part I agree with the assessment because it fits my self-image overall; however, I feel that in the area of extravert I believe that I am more than moderate. Most of my co-workers and friends would say that I am very outgoing and most of the time the life of the party. I enjoy being around people and love to organize events and I take great pride in being committed to these causes.
In regards to the expressed feeling personality I am in total agreement with that analysis because when problems arise, I often take action to resolve them before fully analyzing the situation. I relate this to the fact that I love for all of my relationships to be harmonious. I want everyone around me to be happy and succeed and I will do what it takes to achieve that goal. This is sometimes my worst downfall because I try to take care of everybody without thinking about my own needs. Once I have fixed the problem, I often sit back and think about what I could have done better and most times I realize that instead of me just jumping in and fixing things, I should help the party involved try and resolve the issue on their own first.
My supervisor once commented that; “I fix everything and that’s why people find it so easy to take advantage of my kindness”, this was something that I had never realized nor had I been confronted about it. My mate often says that I wear my feelings on my sleeve because I don’t hide my emotions in certain situations. He also says that I tend to seek out people who seem to be in need so that I can help and feel a sense of accomplishment.
For the most part my focus is on others, I am happy when I know everything is alright with them and I get very troubled when something is amiss. I am a very loyal and reliable person and I do not like to disappoint others. I view myself as a great team player and project manager. I love getting my teammates involved and focus on their strengths. I do not like conflict and seek out the most positive way to respond in any given situation, no matter how tense or uncomfortable it is.
The assessment helped me realize my particular weakness in the workplace. In my opinion, I tend to let emotions impact my judgments. I also tend to get involved with making decisions based on perceptions rather than facts. I can see how this could unfairly sway my conclusions and have a negative impact on the workplace. Taking action to keep my emotions in check would definitely improve my managerial competence. This is not who I am, and it will require me to get out of my comfort zone.
Another area I might have work problems to overcome is my expressed feelings. I am the person that loves to make everything better for everyone and in my business this could have some adverse results. Being in the military I am entrusted to lead people rather than just taking over for them. I also realize that expectations are sometimes unrealistic and I can’t be all things to all people. We all will fall short on occasion; however, the fallback is that we surround ourselves with folks that will complement our “faults”.
This was a wonderful assessment and helped me to identify with myself even more, it helped me to realize that I am a person who makes certain decisions based on my heart, not necessarily rational thinking. It also enabled me to understand other personality types as well. One thing that is for sure is that we all react to certain situations for a reason. I would like to see an assessment of one’s job demands and whether the individual’s personality is compatible with his/her current job. I can see this as being a great tool for selecting the right candidate for a job.
