Workplace Ethics
No worker wants to be placed in an uncomfortable position. Issues worsen when a bad situation is likely to impact not only the employee’s job but the jobs of fellow coworkers. These bad situations are prone to cause even more stress when the decision to act is not so black and white, rather full of a gray area. These types of issues often occur when decisions collide with an employee’s personal ethics. In the case ‘How Personal Can Ethics Get?’ Valerie (an employee of Wisson) is faced with these types of issues. Her actions will not only affect her life but the lives of others around her. The following will discuss some of these issues and explore the choices & ways Valerie can pursue to resolve them.
ETHICAL DILEMMAS
Valerie definitely has some choices to make due to the dilemmas that she is confronting. A major part of her issue has to do with her actual job position and purpose. The case states that Valerie was hired for her input and skills concerning financial issues, marketing plans and overall organizational effectiveness. The rest of her team was made up of creative individuals who did not share her skills and knowledge and were hired for a different contribution to the team and its projects. Essentially, this isolated Valerie and does not provide her with an outlet to garner the support she would need to discuss and work these issues out with other team members; possibly making the situation a little easier to handle. Her position and this newfound knowledge place Valerie in an incredibly difficult spot. The ethical dilemma presents itself with her decision to either act in her own self interest or to come directly forward with the information she has now. Her knowledge of these bad business practices puts her at a distinct advantage in comparison to her coworkers. If she chooses to hold the information back for the time
