...Management & Education Services Chicago, Ill For most of my career, I've been in leadership positions. Only 6 months after beginning my nursing career I was “promoted” to assistant head nurse, night shift. At the time, I was naïve enough to think it was my innate skill and ability, when the reality was more likely the fact that no one else wanted the job. I continued to serve in leadership or managerial positions when I became a nurse-midwife. Several years ago, after many years serving as a director of various nurse-midwifery services, I had the disconcerting but ultimately rewarding revelation that I was not a very good boss. Sure, I was good at negotiating the budget, and getting the midwives decent working conditions, but I was autocratic and aggressive, not very desirable characteristics of a leader. I decided to shift into teaching, something I enjoyed and did not require that I be “in charge” of anyone but myself. To keep clinically active, I took a per diem position as a nurse-midwife at a local hospital. It is a position which I still hold today and one that gives me great pleasure. And it is in part because my current boss is such a skilled leader, a leader that I am proud to follow, that I became interested in the concept of followership. | | It seems that a lot gets written about leadership in both business and healthcare. And, certainly we can all agree that leadership is critical to successful teamwork. In fact, teamwork seems to be the topic du jour...

...Nurse Leader? Leadership Challenges in Building Healthcare Organizations The Business Review, Cambridge 6. 2 (Dec 2006): 296-297. Critical Summary of the editorial Authors Michael William and Jenn Gordan’s article about nurse leadership challenges in building healthcare organizations speak about nursing leadership as more an art than a science. They speak about building a healthcare organization, and how it requires well-honed leadership knowledge, competencies, and skills to develop and enable a successful and sustainable healthcare organization. There are many times in healthcare organizations where the support staff is not concerned or interested in growing the healthcare organization. A leader’s professional dream may be inhibited by the uncommitted support staff that is uninterested or unengaged. The authors speak about the 5 exemplary practices of leader ship as presented by James Kouzes and Barry Posner in their seminal work The Leadership Challenge is about how leaders get extraordinary things done in organizations. The study asks the question; how can nurse managers address and minimize the potentially harmful effects of limited staff interest in the growing healthcare industry? The authors indicate the solution is to simply; implement proven, research-based leadership practices that can stimulate staff interest, excitement, and commitment in building a sustainable healthcare organization. The 5 Exemplary Practices of...

The focus of the analysis is that of a candidate and a campaign manager on their political endeavors to win an election. Strategies such as legitimate power, ethical leadership, consultative decision-making, and transformational leadership will all be examined to provide further insight into how effective leadership can positively influence job performance and commitment. The result of the findings will prove that the methods and styles used are the most efficient for someone in this type of leadership position. Required Individual Analytical Report Introduction This analytical paper discusses an example of exemplary leadership used in a political setting. The use of legitimate power was the driving force for leadership and helped overcome contingency factors such as substitutability, centrality, and visibility. ...have flown by so quickly, but I have been able to learn so much about leadership and the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. Looking back to week one and reflecting on the leadership definition that I created, “Leadership is when anyone, anywhere, is willing to step up and go into the unknown. A leader takes on change, builds relationships, motivates, inspires, and will be a role model, such as how to behave”, I still agree, but my definition has been modified based on all the concepts and strategies I have mastered throughout this course. I still believe that it is super hard to simply define what leadership is, especially since it can mean a lot of different things to different people, but here is my modified version....

...mastering my leadership skills in business world either as a team member or a leader. I have realized that business is not all about making money, but I have known clear yet how I should function in business and what tools I need to deal with it. Therefore, I believe this course can be a tool to help me sharpening my skills and visions in business world. I have learned slightly the leadership concept based on my working experience in banking industry for five years. As an institution engaged in the trust, my company really put forward the human ability rather than skill ability. Human factors either managers or subordinates determine the success of the company. Everyone in the company needs to know the personality of superiors, subordinates or co-workers and how to deal with them effectively. For example, if a manager has to deal with an employee who has low competency, he should give a clear instruction to this employee. This subordinate needs detailed guidance and strict supervision. Conversely, if the subordinate has a high competency and enough confidence in performing his duty, the manager may delegate the task with a brief direction on the goal achieved. According to The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership article, the author introduces the five practices of exemplary leadership which are model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act and encourage the heart. He also shares stories about some leaders that demonstrate exemplary leadership...

...Approaches to Leadership 1. Which conceptualization of leadership most appeals to you? Which one least appeals to you? Why? Give examples. The Group Process of leadership appeals to me the most because it focuses on the leadership role in a group. Also, it emphases on how a leader contributes to a group’s success. For example, in the Group Process, it shows how a leader’s work is organized to utilize personnel and resources, how committed members are to perform their work assignments effectively, how confident members are that their assignments can be accomplished successfully and the extent to which members trust each other and cooperate in accomplishing assignment goals. Even though I like the Dyadic Process, which focuses on the relationship between a leader and another individual, the Group Process highlights other good quality behaviors in a leader. The Intra-Individual Process appeals to me the least because it focuses on the process within a single person. It does not include one essential qualities of a leader, which is guiding/teaching others such as subordinates, peers and external clients. This process involves a leader identifying their own behavior, managing their time efficiently, objectives and priority, and trying to learn to be more effective in accomplishing personal objectives/goals. 2. What sort of leadership (choose one: authoritarian, democratic, laissez-faire) do you prefer as a group member and why? I prefer Democratic Leadership as a group...

Using the actions of either of these two leaders, provide an example that illustrates each of the 5 Practices of Exemplary Leadership. Make a list of the values, personal traits, or characteristics you look for and admire in a leader. You might use the following list of examples or create your own. ...Richard Branson Strayer University Bus 520 Professor Frankenhauser Leadership is defined as the process of influencing an organized group towards accomplishing its goals. We have learned that the leader is not exclusive in the leadership process. Researchers Fred Fiedler and Hollander recognized this and introduced the importance of the follower and the situation in the leadership process. Richard Branson is considered one of the most unorthodox business men of the 21st century. At the helm at the mega firm Virgin Group LTD, Branson has defied conventional management and leadership wisdom. Through all his accomplishments, Branson’s amazing leadership skills cannot be mentioned in a vacuum. There is an interactional relationship between a leader, his or her followers and the situations in which they interact. This paper will analyze Branson as a leader. However, because his leadership success is not mutually exclusive, his followers and the important situations that define his career will be addressed. Richard Charles Nicholas Branson is the son of a lawyer named Edward Branson and an airline flight attendant named Eve Huntley-Flindt; born on July 18, 1950, in Surrey, England. At an early age he strived for more and this was due to “his parent’s upbringing, which taught him to stand on his own two feet.” His parents took extreme measures to encourage their children’s independence. At four years old Richard’s mother pushed him out of the car and told Richard to find his...

...| MGMT 56056 Leadership Theory 19 March 2013 Leader Analysis Paper – Week 2 1) Leader Analysis LLP Chapters 1 and 2 Once John Maxwell stated that “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way”. This single statement has potential to describe leadership process well. Furthermore, it emphasizes that leaders or leadership is not a concept that applies for only remarkable individuals or their acts, leaders are everywhere, in every action, there is a leadership always connected. However, it is unfortunate that not every man can make history, remarkable changes that sustain; therefore, what personalities or qualifications imply to ones to become leaders. Hence, how those traits implement to help leaders to lead. As stated by Pierce and Newstrom in Leaders and the Leadership process, traits influence individuals to become or develop themselves as leaders (63). Natural traits, however, have to have bonds with particular situation in order to support one to be a leader (63). These concerns applied to Margaret Thatcher who was Great Britain’s first female prime minister. She had capacity, responsibility, participation, achievement, and status which are considered as the most important traits that influence leaders (Margaret Thatcher). Margaret had “knowledge about the business” that she was an active member of Conservative party from her childhood. This participation and her achievement as a lawyer helped her to become a prime minister, later (Margaret Thatcher)...

...Mahatma Gandhi – Father of the Nation Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2nd 1869 into a middle class Indian family. Unlike any of the other leaders we have examined throughout this course, Gandhi did not possess any leadership qualities as a child. In fact, he was a very mediocre student in school and admitted to not being “good at anything”. In contrast to Nelson Mandela, there was nothing distinguishing Gandhi from any of his peers. As a boy, Gandhi was shy, introverted, and always kept to himself. He was not a born leader nor did he possess any leadership qualities. Another example of how Gandhi was not a born leader was during his studies and upon his return to India. At the age of 18, Gandhi moved to England to study law. After three painstaking years of rigorous study, he managed to pass the bar exam; however, upon his return to India, Gandhi quickly discovered that he could not practice law in India because he could not be objective, he was not capable enough, and he did not know enough about Indian law. This proves that Gandhi was not a genius, nor was he exceptional during his early years. Gandhi is indeed a true example of how leadership is not innate, but learned. The fundamental turning point in Gandhi’s life was upon his return from England after obtaining his law degree. Gandhi accepted a job in South Africa where he realized his higher calling. He experienced direct discrimination because of his ethnicity. Although he was dressed like a high class...

...What is leadership? Leadership is having the ability to give guidance to those that will follow to complete the mission. Leadership is both rational and emotional. It involves both sides of human experience. It includes actions and influences based on reason and logic as well those based on inspiration and passion. Leadership is a social process shared among all members of a group. Leadership development comes through experience. We all learn from our different experiences. Whether positive or negative, they are our tools for growth and development. What is management? Management is a position of authority. Management says what need to get done and supplies the material to get it done. Management tends to be the more educated than the experienced. Managers can be trained to hold a position. Management is a position of leadership. Can leadership and management be the same? Leadership and management are not the same. Anyone can be a manager and not have any followers. Being able to manage is knowing the aspects of a mission. A leader knows the aspects, has the knowledge and the skills to accomplish the mission. But leadership and management work hand in hand with each other. The management sets the stage and the leadership makes it happen. Leadership is a human relationship process. No scientific method can be used for testing leadership. Leadership is based on human factors and no two humans are the same. Managers are not only interested in status quo, but also production, expansion...

Made is place in the history of one of the most honored and followed leaders in our history. He was the man of courage, honor and vision which he always had held above his Own life and stood fast during extremely difficult and threatening times. He is a perfect specimen to be chosen by anyone who wants to see, learn and feel, what a true “wholehearted” leader looks like and to be followed blindly. It will be wrong to say that Dr. Luther’s life as leader should be assessed on the basis of personality, though, he had traits which are beyond simple explanation. The best way to explore his unquestionable strengths as a leader has to be seen through the lens of “the five practices of the exemplary leadership model”. The first being the, “Model the way”, which explains how a leadership interacts with other people with a set of undeviating principals, by setting examples through his/her standards of behavior. Dr, Martin Luther King was a great transformational leader, whose set of actions were very clear and well understood . He set the examples of being stead fast to his ground without changing his behavior to gain short term success. He remained glued to his objectives and long term goals...

I have spent a lot of time thinking about leadership and all of its implications. In order to answer this prompt, I have decided that it is first important to define what my leadership goals are. Only then can I work to integrate these emotional intelligence tools into my picture of the future. Since my earliest years, I have rallied the people around me into action to accomplish goals.
