...Jack London, the writer behind the prominent and well-known story, The Call of the Wild, shows readers what it is like to survive and get through tough times. His book follows a dog named Buck, the protagonist of the story. He is taken from his home to work up north near the Klondike Mountains. Buck struggles in the freezing and blizzard-like climate, outsmarts his owners, defeats his enemies, becomes a leader, and is finally set free. With every twist and turn, the dog stood strong and powered through life with perseverance and courage. Jack London’s writing is a clear example of surviving by having determination and persistence. In the beginning of Jack London’s masterpiece, an antagonist arose. Spitz, the lead dog of Francois and Perrault’s...

...Perseverance Between Dog and Human Much perseverance is needed when one is pushed into unfamiliar situations. Buck, from Call of the Wild, is thrown into many new situations, constantly having to adjust to new owners, new dogs, and new jobs. However, my mother was a young college student when she was suddenly unable to get to work, therefore unable to pay rent. While these situations couldn’t be more different, they were both forced to overcome unforeseen obstacles in which they had to change the way they operated. Whether it’s scrambling for a place to live or working a sled in the Yukon, both my mother and Buck had to persevere. In Call of the Wild, Buck is forced into a new life with new owners that is lacking in resources required to survive, and must learn to use what he has. For example, when he arrives he is obviously not fully adapted to life in the north. He must rely on Perrault to fit him with little shoes everyday, in order to not hurt his feet on the trail, nor is he strong enough to pull for a long time without guidance. He is also not used to the small rations given out, as he is always hungry. In order to withstand his hunger, he learns how to sneakily steal strips of bacon. Once again he is...

...home might require perseverance. In Call of the Wild, Buck is taken away from his home to live a harmful, and torturing lifestyle and will need to persevere. On the other hand, my mom, like most people, moved away from her home looking for a new start. Even though their situations differ, Buck and my mom, both had to start new lives which required perseverance. Anyone, even animals can encounter hard times, and have to evolve in order to persevere. For example, when Buck was first getting sold, he had to face the beating of a club. When the club first hit him, he was extremely angry and confused, because he had never had to obey anyone before this happened. In another instance, Buck kept getting attacked by Spitz, so...

...to his death. Many people, such as the Into the Wild author Jon Krakauer, believe that “McCandless wasn’t some feckless slacker, adrift and confused, racked by existential despair. To the contrary: His life hummed with meaning and purpose. But the meaning he wrested from existence lay beyond the comfortable path: McCandless distrusted the value of things that came easily” (184). Even though I do not agree with the methods he used while on this spiritual journey, I do agree with Krakauer’s assertion that he kept hope alive even while close to death, and that his life “hummed with meaning and purpose”. McCandless came from a comfortable upper middle class family. Many people would say that Christopher McCandless had a relatively good life. His parents worked hard to provide him with all the necessary tools to ensure that he had a secure future. When he graduated, his parents were under the impression that he was going to attend law school. Chris had different plans which became evident when he donated all his money to OXFAM, and he disappeared into the wild. He didn’t want to be tied down by the stresses of today’s society; he didn’t want an ordinary life. He felt “emancipated from the stifling world of his parents and peers, a world of abstraction and security and material excess, a world in which he felt grievously cut off from the raw throb of existence” (22). Chris attempted the impossible when he decided to venture into the wild to give his life a deeper meaning. Chris McCandless...

...“I Have a Dream” is a public speech delivered by Martin Luther King, a prominent figure in American History, in which he calls for racial equality. Throughout his speech, Martin Luther King inspires and motivates his audience to create a social movement for the betterment of the standards of living for black people in America. The transcript deals with the themes of equality and freedom by using a variety of literary techniques. Social exclusion of the “Negro”, according to Martin Luther King, is holding back America from truly being “great”. He encourages those who are fighting for equality and freedom from the constraints of society to continue their struggle for the betterment of the entire black society. He seems to say that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor, but it must be demanded by the oppressed. The theme of undying hope is also discussed as Martin Luther King encourages his viewers to be persistent in whatever they do. Direct addressal of the reader helps the orator to emotionally connect with the reader to have a greater impact on the audience. The speech begins with direct addressal of the reader to provide emotional connection and thereby enhance the motivational effect of the speech. The possessive pronoun “my” in the noun phrase “my friends” unites Martin Luther King with his audience and so has the ability to strengthen the impact of his inspirational speech. The theme of hope is discussed through repetition of adverbs. The adverb “still” in...

...1. INTRODUCTION (Page 2 to Page 4) The last several decades have seen record numbers of entrepreneurs launching business. In 1969, entrepreneurs created 274,400 new corporations; today, the numbers of new incorporation exceeds 600,000 in a typical year! Another indicator of the popularity of the entrepreneurship is the keen interest expressed by students in creating their own businesses. Increasing number of young people are choosing entrepreneurship as a career rather than joining the ranks of the pinstriped masses in major corporations. In short, the probability that you will become an entrepreneur at some point in your life has never been higher! Research suggested that entrepreneurial activity remains vibrant not only in the United States but across the globe as well. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), a study of entrepreneurial activity across the globe, 10% of the U.S population aged 18 to 64 is engaged in entrepreneurial activity. The study also found out that 9.5% of people in the 42 GEM countries analyzed are involved in starting a new business. Even countries that traditionally are not know as hotbeds of entrepreneurial activity are home to promising start-up companies. 2. WHAT IS AN ENTREPRENEUR (Page 5 to Page 8) At any given time, an estimated 10.1 million adults in the United States are engaged in launching a business, traveling down the path of entrepreneurship. ...Church have invented, and for which they had no other authority than their own imagination. I begin with the book called the Gospel according to St. Matthew. In i. 18, it is said, "Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When His mother Mary was espoused to Joseph before they came together, SHE WAS FOUND WITH CHILD OF THE HOLY GHOST." This is going a little too fast; because to make this verse agree with the next it should have said no more than that she was found with child; for the next verse says, "Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privately." Consequently Joseph had found out no more than that she was with child, and he knew it was not by himself. Verses 20, 21. "And while he thought of these things, [that is whether he should put her away privately, or make a public example of her], behold the Angel of the Lord appeared to him IN A DREAM [that is, Joseph dreamed that an angel appeared unto him] saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take...

...Transgressions of Transgender, A reading of I Am vidya: A Transgenders Journey by Living Smile Vidya Sajna Hameed Assistant Professor, Dept. of English St. Aloysius College, Elthuruth Introduction “There exists no prohibition that cannot be transgressed.” - Georges Bataille “Concern over a rule is sometimes at its most acute when that rule is being broken, for it is harder to limit a disturbance already begun.” - Georges Bataille Blurring the boundaries of race, gender, nationality, and sexuality has become a common denominator in defining personal identity in the twenty-first century. Exploding previous notions of these categories as fixed and static, artists today are taking an active role in exposing them as mere constructions. Nevertheless, transgressing these boundaries is still a delicate dance, and individuals who succeed in walking the line between identity categories occupy a precarious position. The purpose of this study is to explore the resistance strategies that trans-genders utilize when met with adversity and the ways that trans-genders see their trans identity as providing them with a form of strength and resiliency. Trans-genders are often analyzed from a pathologizing lens within the sociological and psychological literature. I wish to investigate the ways that trans-genders are currently pushing back against the oppressive forces that they encounter every day in hopes of increasing awareness of trans-genders resiliency and strength...

...DIVINATION SYSTEMS Written by Nicole Yalsovac Additional sections contributed by Sean Michael Smith and Christine Breese, D.D. Ph.D. Introduction Nichole Yalsovac Prophetic revelation, or Divination, dates back to the earliest known times of human existence. The oldest of all Chinese texts, the I Ching, is a divination system older than recorded history. James Legge says in his translation of I Ching: Book Of Changes (1996), “The desire to seek answers and to predict the future is as old as civilization itself.” Mankind has always had a desire to know what the future holds. Evidence shows that methods of divination, also known as fortune telling, were used by the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians and the Sumerians (who resided in what is now Iraq) as early as six‐thousand years ago. Divination was originally a device of royalty and has often been an essential part of religion and medicine. Significant leaders and royalty often employed priests, doctors, soothsayers and astrologers as advisers and consultants on what the future held. Every civilization has held a belief in at least some type of divination. The point of divination in the ancient world was to ascertain the will of the gods. In fact, divination is so called because it is assumed to be a gift of the divine, a gift from the gods. This gift of obtaining knowledge of the unknown uses a wide range of tools and an enormous variety of ...

He adores Aliena as a kid and throughout his life, and dreams of building a cathedral with the different styles he has seen in France and Spain. Jack Jackson is a round character because he’s a fully developed character throughout the story and because one would feel Jack is real. We have Tom Builder, as well, who’s a tall architect, thorough worker, a concerned and somewhat ingenuous father who looks forward to the welfare of his family; loving of both Agnes, his dead wife, and Ellen, his lover. He’s a round character because on his account the storyline of the book changes. Then, there’s Ellen, a beautiful, athletic, determined, wild, unreserved, amber-eyed woman, mother to Jack Jackson. Early in her life, she was hurt by other people...

...however, these different ways of justifying creative dance may prove contradictory. “Creative dance” is a particular form of dance. This form is typically taught in elementary schools because unlike other dance forms, it does not require years of training. Basically, creative dance involves the use of movement elements to express thoughts and feelings. Dimondstein (1974) expands on this definition when she considers dance to be “the interpretation of a child’s ideas, feelings, and sensory impressions expressed symbolically in movement forms through the unique use of his body” .Creative dance teachers may suggest particular ideas or feelings they want their students to express through movement. Alternatively, they may provide a stimulus— for example, a piece of music, a poem, a painting— which they want students to interpret and express through the medium of movement. The medium of movement can be further defined using the...
