...longer time because of library research and extracurricular activities. (Molmisa, 2011) If the students spend more time in school than at home they should learn much from school. But why does some student get failing grade and some get passing grade? The student’s performance or academic achievement plays an important role in producing the best quality graduates who will become great leader and manpower for the country’s economic and social development. (Ali et.al, 2009) This research will be conducted to find out what affects student’s academic performance. The focus of this research is how student’s performance is affected by factors. Student’s performance is affected due to social, psychological, economic, environmental and personal factors. These factors strongly influence on the student performance, but these factors vary from person to person and country to country. Theoretical Framework This chapter presents the relevant theories about Factors Affecting Academic Performance of Bachelor of Science in Immaculate Conception International College of Arts and Technology in Sta. Maria, Bulacan. The factors affecting academic performance of a student has many reason why it is happening. Thinking skills will affect student’s learning facilities if they will not learn what they need to learn. If teachers do not know how to catch attention of a student, the more the student cannot make themselves be attended to that subject. The student gets lazy because it has a subject that...

...experiences the feeling of ‘not being in control’. From the psychology point of view, stress can also be considered as a reaction to a stimulus that disturbs an individual’s physical or mental equilibrium (Psychology Today, 2014). Given that numerous stressful events are capable of triggering different responses in human beings, it is fair to say that stress is an event that is omnipresent in every part of life; and hence is worth exploring. Significant investigations and debates into the issues of stress, its determinants and who are generally susceptible to stress have been rife in recent decades (Langan-fox and Cooper, 2011). The general consensus is that frequent exposure to traumatic events is the vital stressor for stress and everyone is susceptible to traumatic events and stress (Langan-fox and Cooper, 2011). Externalisation of stressful behaviours as a result of being exposed to traumatic events such as severe neglect, abuse and repeated violence is clinically termed as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2013). It has been maintained that PTSD creates psychological and physical imbalances in sufferers; and affects their physical and mental well-being negatively (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2013). From this standpoint, it can be argued that PSTD equally has the potential to affect the well-beings of university students and their academic performances. However, Hall (2005) maintains that besides traumatic events and the resulting PSTD,...

...child can be more intelligent and may show strong self-confidence in class as compare to those who have not developed their good study habits. A student who does not have good study habits may not perform well in class recitation, quizzes, and activities. This could happen because he may come to school unprepared. Good study habits are the tool to success. (Losare 2007) “Sound study skills and habits are crucial to academic success. Intelligence alone cannot do the job (although it certainly helps). Good academic skills do not develop overnight. They are acquired gradually, so be patient with you. Fortunately, tasks such as reading textbooks, writing papers, and taking tests get easier with practice” Marabut’s article (2006) of Improving Academic Performance p. 96. The word study is connected to the word learning. Learning consists of discovering what generates pleasure and what generates distress for the individual. Changes produced by learning are not always positive in nature. People can acquire bad habits as well as good ones. Good study habit brings many possibilities of attaining better academic performance. Moreover, there are already numerous studies conducted about study habits in connection to the academic performance of student. Mohasco (2007), “Good study habits with proper attitudes will lead to good student’s performance in school”. If an individual is having a planned study habit and is willing to make that happen, it will lead him to a good performance in his...

CHAPTER 1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY “Academic performance” is not a concept that is new, many social scientist and researchers alike have defined academic performance in various ways. Bruce Tuckman (1975) asserts that performance is used to label the observable manifestations of knowledge, skill, concepts, and understanding and idea. So performance is the application of a learning product that at the end of the process provides mastery. It is the acquisition of particular grades on examination; it shows or indicates the students’ ability, mastery of content, skills in applying learned knowledge to a particular situation. A student is generally judged on examination performance (Banquil et al, 2009). A student’s academic...

...presents the factors affecting the performace of the students in relation to basic electronics. The chapter begins with a definition of basic electronics, followed by the findings of researches about the factors affecting the academic performance of the student. The research outcomes germane to the performance, attitudes, surroundings and the factors that affects the performace of the ECE sophomore in Basic Electronics. Basic electronics is a course offered by ECE students in their second year in college. According to NCCE (2008), the course is made of passage of electricity in gases and in evacuated tubes, induced electricity and their uses, cathode rays, positive rays and their properties, simple electronic devices, diodes properties, Oscilloscope T.V. tubes, band theory of solids LC, energy level diagrams for conductors, semi-conductors and insulators, doping, types of semiconductors: P-types and N-types, P-N junctions, rectifying property of a p-n junction, forward and reverse biasing, simple transistors and oscillator circuits. Others include n-p-and p-n, basic structures and terminologies and their applications, colour coding, Integrated circuits (ICS). We can consider that one of the factor that affects the student's performance is the difficulty of the subject/course. It is therefore a matter of concern to find out what else may affects the student 's performance. Many researchers has been discussed the different factors that affects the student academic performance in their...

...paper related to poor academic performance. Foreign Related Literature College education is a stepping stone for someone’s future. A person’s academic performance reflects to his grades and it is a big factor that employers look for in finding for their employees. Employees are the core element of a business organization because the productivity of a business depends on the employee’s performance that is why employers are strict when it comes to employment. Not all college students are performing well academically and it is caused by different factors and these factors vary from what the students are experiencing while they are in college. One factor that we can consider is the media consumption like TV viewing and surfing of the internet but video game playing may have replace TV viewing as the most frequent form of media usage most likely for the male students according to Burgess (2012). Frequent players of video game usually ends up forgetting their home works or not reviewing for their exams but they may be using this as a reason to avoid doing these things and that causes their poor performance academically. Romantic breakup of a student can also be a cause of academic performance being poor. According to Field (2013) students with high breakup distress have high negative emotions like depression, anxiety, and anger which results to negative behavior like poor academic performance. Teachers or professors can also affect students’ academic performance through effective teaching...

...Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Student’s academic performance occupies a very important place in education as well as in the learning process. So to have better classroom performance and lower drop out incidence, many colleges require students to stay in school dormitories especially those students who live far from school like Cavite, Tarlac, Laguna, Batangas etc. It is widely believed that living in campus dormitory can acquire some benefits in their academic performance. Large universities provide a number of academic services in dormitories such as tutoring and student organizations that encourage an environment conducive to learning. Residence halls have served as an essential aspect of collegiate life since the early colonial colleges. Closely associated with the learning environment, early dorms housed faculty in the facilities to serve in the roles of counselors, supervisors, and educators. Historically, research on individual differences that bear on school success has focused on general intelligence. A century of empirical evidence has now unequivocally established that intelligence, defined as the “ability to understand complex ideas, to adapt effectively to the environment, to learn from experience, to engage in various forms of reasoning, to overcome obstacles by taking thought” (Neisser et al., 1996 , p. 77) has a monotonic, positive relationship with school success (Gottfredson, 2004; Kuncel, Ones, & Sackett, 2010 ; Lubinski, 2009...
