Faith, by definition is complete trust in something. But what happens when you decide that what you believe in is completely wrong? Directed by Joshua Marston, the netflix original, Come Sunday explores the boundaries between personal and communal beliefs. The film is one of the few that dares to explore the controversy within a religion widely followed to this day.
Come sunday is set in Tulsa, 1998, amidst a town of pentecostal believers. Based on a true story, this touching tale features a world-renowned pastor, Carlton Pearson, who gets accused of heresy after he stops believing in hell. The movie expands his lifestyle after he puts himself, his family and his church at risk. To Carlton, church comes even before family, and his life is shattered

Religion in Australia Media

...MacFarlane’s soul purpose with the TV show is to make the viewers laugh, but how far is too far when it comes to the point of mocking a religion? Many religious followers feel deeply insulted by the media treatment of Family Guy as they view their religion as something far from a joke and feel as if the general public is mocking them when they laugh at MacFarlane’s gags instead of discouraging it. Although maybe it should not be taken so seriously and just be taken as a bit of lighthearted fun as Macfarlane is not trying to convey a message to his audience. There are no facts about God in any of the gags just fictional mocking at old bible stories. An example is when in one of the episodes MacFarlane ridicules the Christian faith by having God set s light to a fart that comes out as the universe after winning an arm wrestle. The show provides no use to Christian teachings in any way, shape or form with such highly inappropriate content. All in all we have been taught that there’s a certain line that shouldn’t be crossed when it comes to portraying a religion to an audience even though MacFarlane continues with his gags and successfully does so with such a high number of viewers per episode. It is often very rare to find a secular media source that offers a religious message, yet movie ‘Bruce Almighty’ does this and more presenting religion as something we grow into as we find our faith. The Christian message behind the comedic and dramatic plot is a very positive one that leaves us...

American Freedoms for the Muslim World

...printing your thoughts on paper for others to read, or to broadcast your voice over the air waves for people to hear, and with the invention of Television you can even share your facial expressions, gestures, and movements. However there has always been a limit to just how much you could express. There have always been ‘rules’ to follow, things that you just don’t put on the television, or the radio, things that you cannot print in the paper. But with the birth of the internet a brand new freedom immerged, suddenly and with great explosion anyone could express themselves in any manner they desired, and there are few ‘rules’ to regulate just how ‘free’ you can be. We see the result of this ‘freedom’ in the recent incident involving a low-budget film: Innocence of Muslims which has caused a great deal of uproar in many countries across the globe. According to The New Yorker ‘The video is crude, both aesthetically and ideologically. It was, presumably, intended to offend, and it is having that effect.’2 The movie has also been blamed for inspiring the killings of...

Religions of the World

...not sensible. Religion negatively affects rationality with its doctrines, scriptures, and governance because it promotes ignorance. Ignorance comes in many forms; ignorance of evidence, moral perspective, other faiths, equality, etc. Theorizing a higher force is neither illogical nor dangerous, but piling on details contrary to what reason dictates does just that. It was sensible for ancient civilizations to do such things, and the same goes for primitive cultures today. However, these ideas should not subsist in the modernized parts of the world. The rise of religious beliefs within past civilizations does seem reasonable when considering the time period. Calling the ancient Egyptians “dumb” or their beliefs “stupid” is naïve since they lacked scientific knowledge and the means to obtain it. To the Egyptians, the sun and moon appeared as if they were moving and switching places periodically. The “mover” responsible for these actions was labeled Ra, the sun god. Now we know that Earth’s rotation affects the amount of sunlight in a region, which causes the occurrence of day and night. Supernatural belief back then was an attempt to explain the world and peoples’ experiences of it. Bill Maher in Religulous demonstrates that religion today contradicts reason, and that religious followers need their consciousness raised. Having faith does not lead to the right path but instead leads one astray. He attacks scriptures...

Poverty Porn

...Poverty porn By: Gilda Cordero-Fernando Philippine Daily Inquirer 4:43 am | Sunday, June 17th, 2012 From time to time, National Artist Francisco Sionil Jose poses questions like, “What is wrong with us?” or “Why we are so shallow?” And one day I got bristling mad and told him, “Speak for yourself, Frankie!” Of course he just laughed at me and said, “Not you, but we as a people.” “But I am a people!” I said indignantly, “And such statements make me boil.” He laughed even more and continued to invite debates still more depressing. By then truly aggravated, I suddenly remembered a contemporary who had been an honor student but somehow never made it in life. He was always in dire need, buying and selling odds and ends to keep body and soul together. Whenever he visited me he would complain over and over how poor and luckless he was. Suddenly I remembered those affirmations that “abundance” workshops assigned participants to repeat, “I am loved,” “I am beautiful,” “I have everything I need.” My friend’s was a mantra, too, only in reverse. Looking at him made me realize that, yes, repetition does make what you repeat become reality. That was my brief with Mr. Frankie Sionil Jose. I was his direct opposite. I know he loves the Filipinos, too, but he criticizes them negatively, if brilliantly, while all I want is for my kabayan to feel the simple joys of being loved. Courage

...the character in a film with whom I most strongly related would surely be 'the cowardly lion', from The Wizard of Oz. This was not because I was entertained by his cowardliness, as his name would make you think, but because I really liked his relentless quest for courage. When speaking of courage, the cowardly lion compares it's magnitude to these sentiments: “what makes a king out of a slave?...what makes the flag on the mast wave?...what makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk?” the answer to all of those questions, is of course, courage. There are, however, many different elements that make up the word, making it difficult to accurately capture the true meaning in a single sentence. It's not simply being momentarily brave and jumping from a cliff, or latching on to a group of vagabonds on a hunt for wizards and adventure. While the definition states that 'courage is the ability to do something that frightens one', in this essay I'd like to explore the different dimensions of the word, involving not only the conquering of courageous, physical feats, but also by acknowledging where courage comes from and how, once displayed, it can change your life on many different levels. In modern culture, displaying courage often becomes defined by the danger one displays through death-defying physical feats. An example of this would be taking a ride on a rollercoaster that you have always too scared to ride. When the line comes to an end and it's...

Chronicles of Narnia

...millions since the 1950's for whom the books have been a source of childhood enchantment, Lewis's religious intentions have either been obvious, invisible or beside the point. Which is part of the appeal of allegory, as he well knew. It is a symbolic mode, not a literal one - there are, after all, no talking beavers in the Bible - and it constructs distinct levels of meaning among which readers travel of their own free will. An allegorical world is both a reflection of the real one and a reality unto itself, as Lewis's heroes, the four Pevensie children, come to discover. The story of Aslan's sacrifice and resurrection may remind some readers (and now viewers) of what they learned in Sunday school, but others, Christian or not, will be perfectly happy to let what happens in Narnia stay in Narnia. The supposed controversy over the religious content of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" may be overhyped, but a particular question of faith nonetheless hovers around the movie, which was produced by Walden Media and distributed by Disney. Anyone who grew up with the Narnia books is likely to be concerned less with Lewis's beliefs than with the filmmakers' fidelity to his work, which was idiosyncratic and imperfect...

Aesthetics of Representing Cultural Paradigms in Rushdie

...forces can be discerned as both antagonistic and complementary forces in cultural development. Raymond Williams develops a theory of relation between culture at large and cultural products like literature. Culture is manifested in human artifacts and activities such as music, literature, life-style, food, painting, sculpture, theatre and film. It can be said that arts and the world of science with their moral systems come to form culture. These are constantly in a spatio-temporal flux that renders an inexhaustible range of meanings and a catalogue of the elements. In this process of evolution a particular aspect dominates or fades off at some space-time coordinate. The pattern of human activity and the symbolic structures give such activities significance and importance. Rushdie, like other postcolonial writers not only reflects upon the political aspects of history but also deconstructs the interrelationships between history and individual to delve into the moral and psychological tensions of the native homeland. His novels are the fine example where ethics of the nation are well represented in the aesthetics of his works. Rushdie himself has come to represent pop culture and has always been a powerful figure in re-presenting culture in his writings and this paper is an attempt to decipher a pattern in this representation. Rushdie’s self-avowed purpose in writing the novels is to highlight ‘the connection between public affairs and private lives.’...

Gerry Allen is the professor, wish means it will be not only educational, but enlightening as well. I like his approach to counseling, as he explains in the beginning of class; a counselor must treat the client’s “self”. A potential client is much more than the sum of their assessment, more than a culmination of facts of events or a sequential historical data of behavioral inheritance. The client is a living human being that has perception that is unique unto their own. To really understand and be of service to them a counselor must work in concert with the client to understand their view and the origins of their perception of the world in wish they base this view upon. God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here am I." Then he said, "Do not come near; put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground." And he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. —Exodus 3:2, 4-6 Now as Saul journeyed he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed about him. And he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" And he said, "Who are you, Lord?" And he said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” —Acts 9:3-6 The Passion of The Christ is the best movie I have ever seen. It was graphic and faithfully stayed with the Gospel texts.
