There are certain environmental factors that can affect our stress levels and sometimes we cannot control the outcome of these events, these are basic ups and downs of life. An example of an external stressor is a catastrophe. Catastrophe is an unpredictable, large scale event that can create a magnificent need to adapt or adjust your lifestyle. An example of a catastrophe would be an earthquake or your house burning down. Another huge stressor in our lives could be a major life change. It could be something from a death in the family, to a family move from one city to another, or it could be as simple as a job change. There are certain environmental factors that can affect our stress levels and sometimes we cannot control the outcome of these events, these are basic ups and downs of life. Writing 121 Creative Piece

...Harrison Liu 932273007 Rita Feinstein Writing 121 February 3, 2015 Aristotle once stated “man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual.” Looking at modern society, people often choose to conform to the “group’s” opinion. People choose to discard their own personal identity to stay under the radar and avoid being labeled a misfit. This leads to the abdication of free will. In Taylor Swift’s recent music video “Shake it Off”, she uses both her lyrics, and images in the video to display to the audience how free will is discarded to obtain collectivism. When initially listening to the song, one first notices the happy and upbeat background music. Background music is often regarded as the most essential piece of a song as it is the biggest contributor in giving the audience their first impression of the song, the message. As explained in Dramas, Fields, and Metaphors: Symbolic Action in Human Society, first impressions are more than just the initial establishment of a person. First impressions create the foundation of one’s characterization of another and are the hardest to forsake in an attempt to change. Taylor Swift incorporates a very fast paced, upbeat background in her song. This generates a very positive and happy impression making the audience think of her as a cheerful buoyant person. Swift’s immediate attempt to make the...

Sleight of Hand, Sleight of Mind: Orson Welles' F for Fake and the Art of the Cinematic Con

...Sleight of Hand, Sleight of Mind Orson Welles' F for Fake and the Art of the Cinematic Con Orson Welles' 1974 "film essay" F for Fake opens with a scene of Welles, in the role of a magician, performing a sleight of hand trick with a young child, "transforming" the key the young boy has presented him into a coin and then showing how the young boy had the key all the time in his pocket. The magic was the perfect illustration of Welles' purpose in the film. F for Fake was a film about fraud and deceit, about how the makers of art (and, in particular, film) use "trickery" to fool their intended audience into believing something that is not true. The film focuses on three known "charlatans" (Elmyr de Hory, Clifford Irving, and Welles himself) who used their talents to produce such magnificent forgeries that they were able to fool everyone (even so-called "experts") into believing in the truth of their claims. Despite the status of this film as one of Welles' "minor" films from late in his life (it was one of the last films he completed prior to his death in 1985), it has had a tremendous impact on filmmaking, both in a technical sense (the film's complex editing of various film stocks and styles) and in a textual sense. Welles' identification of the ways in which an audience can be manipulated into believing anything as long as it has the "air" of authenticity has had a tremendous impact on current filmmaking, especially in the realm of horror filmmaking with the current crop...

Role Of Pride In The Odyssey

...glory. He gains fame through his journeys, victories and skill. As with all Homer created heroes, Odysseus possesses pride which causes him to do very unwise things. The Iliad is another epic poem written by Homer entertaining us with a story about Achilles. Achilles was the greatest warrior in the Achaean army. The most significant flaw of Achilles is his excessive pride. He is willing to subvert the good of the whole army and to endanger the lives of those who are closest to him to achieve emotional blackmail. The plot of the Odyssey is Odysseus’ 10 year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. While Odysseus battles mythical creatures and faces the wrath of the gods, his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus fight off suitors or fakers trying to steal Penelope's hand from Odysseus and Ithaca's throne long enough for Odysseus to return. The Odyssey ends with Odysseus winning a contest to prove his identity, killing the suitors, and retaking the throne of Ithaca for himself. The plot of the Iliad is about the final year of the Trojan War, a conflict in which Greek warriors sailed the Aegean (Turkey) and surrounded the fortress of Troy for ten years, three millennia ago. The plot also includes the greek hero...

Interpret Meanings Behind Shake It Off Lyrics by Taylor Swift

...Amanda Medina AMST101 QUIZ #1 : Popular Music “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift I choose this song because firstly, this song is one of the most popular song lately in America since the day it was released it was the #1 hit song on Billboard. For me personally, this song has a very catchy melody, where at first the band started of with an up-beat drum which could create a feelings of excitement. There are also a couple of repetition on the hook, 'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake I shake it off, I shake it off Heart-breakers gonna break, break, break, break, break And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake I shake it off, I shake it off So I think these repetition makes it easier for listeners to remember the song words, also the melody. Additionally, this song talks about a girl who’s brave, confident, happy and she doesn’t care about what people thinks on her. If we see from the lyrics, Taylor uses a different kinds of words in every new chorus which makes the song interesting and not boring. In some part of the song, she sings the melody into a slower and softer sound to show the feelings where she’s chill and just go with the flow of music she listens to, But I keep cruising..
Can't stop, won't stop moving.. It's like I got this music…
In my mind, saying, "It's gonna be alright...

Calling In Sick 1It takes skill to call in sick to work with a phony excuse. 2And not sound like a faker. 3First of all, you must be sure to speak directly to your boss. 4Not to a co-worker or secretary. 5If you talk to a person who doesn’t like you. 6The individual may “forget” to give the boss the message. 7Making you look totally irresponsible. 8Or the person may tell the boss, in a sarcastic tone, “Terry is sick again.” 9Transmitting the message that you are definitely faking. 10Second, being careful not to ruin your excuse by overacting or exaggerating. 11For example, coughing on the phone like a tuberculosis victim or sneezing after every word. 12Also, don’t tell the boss that you have a complicated disease. 13Such as bronchitis combined with pneumonia. 14A simple excuse sounds more truthful, so stick with the flu or a stomach virus. 15The most important technique involved in calling in sick is making sure you don’t get caught. 16You must, for instance, be willing to stay home all...

Give And Take Analysis

...givers are willing to maintain all relationships. As stated by Grant, takers and givers are similar in a way that they both have large networks, but takers only approach networks to benefit themselves. Grant has provided a great example of how a taker approach relationships to profit himself. According to Give and Take, “If you wanted to get [Ken] Lay to attend a meeting, you need to invite someone important” (32). Like all other takers, Lay is a taker who likes to mingle with powerful people who are going to be useful for him. However, takers may be able to approach relationships but it is hard for them to maintain relationships because people tend to stay away from takers. For instance, one of my classmates in elementary school was a good faker, and she approached me to fulfil her needs. She got close to me because she wanted to eat lunch at my house. By the end of the school year, my mother found out that she is a taker because she was not willing to help me when I needed her help. This experience have taught me that...

Economic Art Fraud

...materials were used to create old paintings. This, along with the bills passed to deal with forgery can help deal with forgery in the short run because atomic fingerprinting can check for quality in a piece of art. The bills passed can help protect the creators work by giving them documented proof that the work is theirs. The results of the project will work in the long run because the process would be updated to include any new materials that are used to emulate older materials that were used at the time. This is how the major economic problem of forgery the arts can be dealt with. These methods and bills aim to protect the works of famous artists and ensure that the arts live on throughout history. Eth 316 Week 5

...Ethics Game Dilemma ETH 316 Ethics Game Dilemma Various conditions come up in the office that requires employees to sit down and think about the best solution. This usually involves supervisors and subordinates. At times answers are vague and what seems to be the most clearly defined answer, is not always the suitable choice. The Ethics Game simulation displayed two different cases: The Case of the Mysterious Rose and The Case of the Cold Feet. Both cases bring the manager across different thought procedures to make him or her comprehend the magnitude of examining the situation in dissimilar ways. In The Case of the Mysterious Rose, the simulation presented the predicament of a female employee getting flowers from another anonymous employee. I, as her boss, know about this state of affairs. The employee sends an e-mail soliciting for my assurance in a meeting. The obstacle that presents itself is how I have to answer the employee’s appeal for discretion in a meeting. Because I know about flowers and the possibility of impending harassment, I know that I cannot give her my guarantee on 100% secrecy. The simulation progresses through a sequence of steps managing the user to look at the situation from diverse ethical lenses. Both the rights and responsibilities lens and the results lens take the initial step in recognizing the primary participants. The following actions differed for the lenses. Banning Photoshop Research Paper

...really good for the celebrities ego when they use it and is it making them look good or a bit worse? In my opinion photoshop shouldn’t be used for these purposes, because it makes them look fake and it’s overly abused as it is . Celebrities shouldn’t let computers and stingy agents decide how they look. They should try doing it by themselves, but it’s at anyone’s free will, as long as it isn’t taken too far. Photoshopping someone with three heads is too far! On the other hand, it can help boost a rising star to the higher ranks of being famous. But when it comes to everyday things like newspapers, magazines and websites it is easily noticed and could make them look worse than what they started with. Let’s get started with them looking faker than they do in movies or on T.V. When using photoshop in magazines and on websites, in the bottom right corner of them it tells whether or not it is photoshopped or it’s the celebrities natural look. (Hilltop News’ “Should photoshop be banned from mass media?” By Samantha Driscoll) States that 69% of adolescents in the areas of 5th-12th grade (mainly female) say that magazines with these labels influenced the “perfect” body structure. All though photoshop is constantly used in moves to “boost character” and make it more appealing to the eye, nobody wants to see someone with a literal hourglass figure...if it’s humanly possible. Furthermore, photoshop can be overly abused as it is, mainly in movies, and sometimes adding a quick filter to...

Civil Commitment and the Mentally Ill

...Insanity is defined as “The principal legal doctrine permitting consideration of mental abnormality in assessing criminal liability. Those acquitted of criminal charges as Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity are typically required to spend an indeterminate period of treatment in a secure mental health facility until they are no longer dangerous to self or others”.(Greene & Heilbrun). Each state carries its own statutes on how to deal with the insanity defense. In the state of California the follow the M’Naghten rule. The M’Naghten rule was established in 1843 after an Englishman by the name of Daniel M’Naghten murdered the secretary of the British prime minister. M’Naghten suffered from delusions that made him believe that he was being stalked and plotted against. He was charged with murder and plead not guilty by reason of insanity. He got off under his insanity plea, but ended up in a mental institution for the remainder of his life. This infuriated some people so Queen Victoria imposed the M’Naghten rule as a stricter guideline (or test) for the insanity defense. This rule implies that a person that commits a crime did not understand the difference between right and wrong at the time the crime had taken place. It must be proved by the defense that the person on trial has some sort of “disease of the mind” that would cause them to commit the crimes they have. It excuses the behavior that took place in the event that insanity can be proved. Because the M’Naghten rule is still...
