Fast Food Industry in New York City
Based on the requirements of this assignment, the industry that I selected is the fast food restaurant industry in New York City. The Fair Workweek Law is aimed at providing employees in the fast food restaurant industry in New York City with more reasonable work schedules. In an effort to provide fast food restaurant employees with better working conditions, employers are required to provide employees with more consistent and reliable work schedules. This will allow them to be more equipped and have better work-life balance. Fast food employees would no longer have to stress about how they are going to get childcare if they are called into work, or about how much their earned wages will be at the end …show more content…
This will allow part-time employees within the fast food restaurant industry the opportunity to gain full-time employment through the acquisition of full-time work hours. However, employers are not required to offer current employees additional work shift hours if the end result will require them to pay overtime. Additionally, employees will have the ability to accept a maximum of 40 hours per week or decline additional work hours (NYC Consumer Affairs, n.d.).
Banning “Clopenings” in Fast Food Restaurants.
Clopenings occur when employers schedule their employees to work consecutive shifts with limited time off between shifts. For example, an employee is scheduled to work the closing shift of the restaurant today and is also scheduled to work the opening shift the following day without a minimum of 11 hours between shifts. This category of the Fair Workweek Law bans employers from scheduling employees to work such shifts. Additionally, if employers violate these requirements, they are mandated to pay employees $100 per shift (NYC Consumer Affairs, n.d.).
