...work at the Young at Art Museum in Davie so art surrounded me everywhere. Although, until I visited the very first First Friday held this fall, I never really experienced art so authentic and got to meet the people behind it. I went to First Friday with my roommate Kasey, not really sure what to expect but the second we got there, I was enthralled. The different exhibits, the vibrant people and even the exotic-looking food trucks reeled me in. I’m an aspiring photographer so when I go to exciting places like these, it’s inevitable that I stop to take a picture every five feet. I’m also really into vintage clothes so I was really obsessed with all the clothes in the stores there too. I absolutely loved the interpretive dances, installations and photography that I saw and I was able to add a lot more shots to my portfolio because I got some great ones there. My absolute favorite part about that night was a man we met named Jay Snodgrass who was inside sitting in one of the galleries with a fold-up table and an old type-writer. He was offering on-goers at First Friday poems on demand for free, but of course he accepted donations. Kasey and I both got one after he asked us about ourselves. He challenged us to not stop talking about ourselves as he wrote. The finished product made absolutely no sense to me but still, the aesthetic of it was the cherry on the top to my first, First...

I don’t have time to take care of the stuff that surrounds me every day that is disposable, like coffee cups and diapers and tea bags and things that if I slowed down and paid attention to and shepherded, husbanded, nurtured, would last a lot longer. I wouldn’t have to replace them as often as I do. But who has time for that? ...and confessed to have heard of the coming study. They had a few questions were I easily answered using the leaflet and information gained during the meeting the day before (e.g. will all the children at the school be used, What activities will be done etc). The only question asked will wasn’t given a clear answer is when they asked if Chikando staff will actively participate in the activities when they come. I informed them I would get back to them with the answer because I wasn’t too sure. Most attendees expressed gratitude that their school was chosen. When asked if anyone would refuse their child to partake, no negative answer was registered. Day 2 Friday 22nd April 2011 On this day which was a Good Friday, most the Thantwe NHC (Chakwaba, Zala and Chisaba villages) went to the nearest Catholic Church to celebrate Good Friday .I used that platform and before the end of the service was given time to give health education on the study. Most people had heard of it and were quite conversant with the details and no major problems were encountered during the brief discussion. Overall the community is happy that their school has been chosen and welcomes the study wholeheartedly. No major problems...

...Decision Making Process Katrina Graham Management Theory and Practice July 26, 2013 Edgar De Jaegher I was working at a collection company. The job entailed us calling on customers and collecting on past due loans. The job does require crazy hours because of the times that you are allowed by law to call the customer when collecting a debt. We were required to work Monday and Tuesday from 11 am to 8 pm, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 am to 6 pm, Friday from 9 am to 4 pm and every other Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. This work schedule was already hectic and taking up a lot of my time. I had another job offer from another collection agency but I didn’t accept it because I am loyal to a company I work for. Without notice, the company made us work from 12-9 on Monday and Tuesday, 9-5 on Friday and 10-4 on Saturday without any extra benefits or pay. The other agency that offered me a position paid more money and the work schedule was 10 am to 7 pm Monday through Thursday and 9-3 on Fridays and no weekends. The hours were more convenient and the pay was better and those were the determining factors when I decided to change jobs. I would use the same steps in making any important decisions and it would still be the same. When you use critical analytical thinking you can make a better and more rational decision because it gives you the chance to consider all your...

...per church service each Sunday. As I looked around during his speech everyone seemed to be tuned in and listening to him speak as he spoke. The similarities of the audience, is that most of them attended with their families. * During the week the Pastor runs through his speech multiple times by himself and then Friday and Saturday he rehearses with the rest of the staff. As a pastor he knows that his audience is made up of all ages, so he tries to incorporate things that the younger kids can understand as well. * The Topic of the speech was about how impatient people are. * Thesis of the speech was being impatient can potentially make us harm others even if we don’t mean too. * The Main Points extracted from the speech were: how impatient driving makes us break the law, the retail season we are facing on how people harmed people for the bargains of black Friday because they were impatient, and the Advent season is supposed to be the season of waiting. * Support Materials in this speech were effective. He used stories from the news on how people were impatient and harmed others to get what they wanted faster during the black Friday sales. He also narrated a story out of the bible describing the impatience of people back then. * The Speaker’s Delivery was really good. He was very clear, and when there was a strong point or...

...Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, started based on an accounting term when records were kept in ink with red signifying a loss in profits and black signifying a profit. Retailers generally operate in the red (unprofitable) throughout the year and depend heavily on the holiday season sales to end the year in the black with a profit. While Black Friday is not considered a national holiday, it has been commercialized as such a big deal that employees are given this day off in the hopes of increasing the number of shoppers. Although Black Friday is a tradition for many families, in today's society, Black Friday has become a bad sign for the US. As we witness every line wrapped around a building at 4am and as we see more and more people...

...Thanksgiving is a holiday to be with your families and enjoy life. But now, instead of being with their families, people are going out on one of the biggest shopping sprees. Black Friday. ...The history of Black Friday actually begins with kick off of The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, created in 1924. This event ushers in the Holiday shopping season that begins on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Taking a closer look... Let's turn the calendar back to 1939, when the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, moved Thanksgiving back a week to offer retailers more time to sell their products and experience a financial upturn. As the change was announced in October, Roosevelt's plan created a bit of confusion among the public. Consequently, many Americans celebrated the Holiday in its original time and in fact, even ridiculed Roosevelt's Holiday changes by referring to the day as "Franksgiving. " Despite the difficulties...

...Thursday Thanksgiving Day, which is always the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, is a week from today (today is Nov. 15, 2012; Thanksgiving Day is Nov. 22 this year). The day after Thanksgiving Day is called “Black Friday” in the business world. “Black Friday” is the unofficial beginning of the Christmas and Hanukkah shopping season. The word “black” in “Black Friday” is an accounting term meaning “profit.” Businesses that have been operating “in the red” prior to Thanksgiving Day will hopefully be “in the black” as a result of all the shopping and buying that people do during the holiday (Christmas and Hanukkah) season. Until about ten years ago, stores would open on Black Friday at their usual time (9:00 am or whenever). There would be a long line of people waiting to get in, as most people have the day off on Black Friday and want to begin their Christmas shopping or Hanukkah shopping that day or soon thereafter. Beginning about ten years ago, retail stores began to open earlier and earlier on Black Friday in order to gain an advantage over competitors who opened at 9:00 am. Stores began opening at 6:00 am on Black Friday, then, a few years later, would open at 4:00 am on Black Friday. Some began opening at midnight (12:01 am) on Black Friday. The retail chain Target Stores announced that this year (2012) their stores will open at 9:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day (Thurs., Nov 22). Their stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day until9:00 pm, then will open at 9:00 pm...

...When you hear the words black Friday what do you think of? Some people think of madness and insanity ,while others might think of saving money and still being able to get holiday gifts for their family's. According to @NerdWallet. "The Pros and Cons of Shopping on Black Friday - NerdWallet." NerdWallet. N.p., 25 Nov. 2015. Web. 30 Nov. 2016. ''You’ve scanned the ads and thought about the gifts you need and the things you’d like to find on sale during Black Friday. You’ve done price comparisons and even mapped out where you want to shop. But you might be feeling relaxed after Thanksgiving dinner, and the thought of getting up before the sun (or, in some cases, shopping late into the night) might not be so appealing. As the holiday fades,...

...Black Friday is the annual shopping holiday that occurs on the Friday following Thanksgiving. It is mostly a shopping ritual to those people living in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Black Friday is a significant day to many retail stores because it is referred to as the start of the Christmas or holiday shopping season. The origin of the popular Black Friday dates back to before 1961, in Philadelphia, where it was formally used to describe the heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic. It was always seen as extremely disruptive to the Philadelphia Police Department and always transpired on the day after Thanksgiving and thus the name Black Friday came about. As the years passed, an alternative reasoning for the title came to be known which denoted that retailers traditionally functioned at a financial loss recognized as, “in the red” from the months January to November. “Black Friday” therefore signifies the point at which retailers finally start to return a profit, “in the black”. Over the years more and more stores have begun opening at extremely early hours to help consumers get a jump-start on the sales. Some retailers have even started the trend of opening up at midnight. The Black Friday craze is tremendously popular, so popular in fact, that many incidents including violence has been seen in some cities in the past. We wanted to research if Black Friday should be considered a ritual. Our research process included secondary and primary sources. Our primary sources were...

...Black Friday Madness In the essay “Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization,” the author, Andrew Leonard, makes the argument that, “The out-of-control marketing and consumer insanity” (135) has taken over Thanksgiving and the days following it. Sadly, as consumers, we have forgotten what Thanksgiving is really all about. Marketing businesses have gone overboard brainwashing consumers with advertisements pumping them up to shop on Black Friday and the days that follow. Moreover, marketing businesses have caused the actions we see and hear about on Black Friday such as people being trampled, as consumers rush into stores to shop the sales, and are proof of this insanity. I strongly agree with Leonard’s arguments from “Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization,” that it is time to take back Thanksgiving and end the craziness. First of all, Leonard points out that marketing and consumers have become out of control with all of the Black Friday sales. He gives examples of advertisements that are out of control. For example, “after the perky Stepford-wife shopper sings joyfully about how she’s ‘been in line since yesterday’ and how everybody’s going to Kohl’s at ‘midnight, midnight’ the ad ends with her observing, with a mild air of perturbance, that she ‘can’t get this darn song out of my head.’ Ladies and gentlemen, there’s your winner of the 2011 award for honesty in advertising” (135). This commercial is an attempt to brainwash consumers. He talks about “grown men screaming...
