How a teacher in a nursery uses four different communication skills and applies values of care
I went into a preschool and I was observing how a teacher uses tone of voice, tone of pace, clarifying and posture. All of these skills are briefly described how they used the communication and what will happen if they didn’t use that skill. All of these examples I used are from what I observed and I didn’t use names I made them up to maintain confidentiality.

Tone of voice:
Tone of voice means the way our voice response and the way we speak to others, this means what we say might not be important but how we say the words is really important, tone of voice is really important because it defines quality of a persons voice, for example our pitch, volume and characteristics of our voice. There are lots of different types of tones in our voice and they happen naturally for example: when you’re angry you speak quickly and really loud, having a chat/conversation with friends our tone changes to a clam, slow and lots of different types of tone which puts people to an ease, flat tone of voice is usually depressed and exhausted and when ever a person is talking another person can figure out what kind of tone you have and that tone often reflects your mood.
Teachers in a nursery use tone of voice very effectively they use that by being calm to everyone for example: when Dylan broke some toy the teacher try make him understand that what he did was wrong in a calm/friendly tone this is useful because having a calm/friendly tone will make Dylan understand that what he did was wrong and by having that kind of tone is good because that tone will try and encourage Dylan and he wont do that mistake again, But if the teacher told Dylan off and her tone of voice is angry/loud/sharp this will make Dylan angry and also he will feel insecure and he wont trust the teacher again because Dylan is going to think that the teacher is always angry and tells him off and he is likely to break the toy again on purpose.
Another example where tone of voice was used is when Dylan was pushed his friend and his friend was crying and then he teacher had enough of Dylan and she took him to the head teacher and the head teacher was angry and her tone of voice was normal but a little sharp to show that she was angry for what he did, this was suitable for him because Dylan is very naughty and he will learn something because he got told off by the head teacher, but if a teacher used the same tone of voice as the head teacher then that wont effect Dylan because sometimes a child is not scared of the teacher and more scared of the head teacher.

Pace of voice:
Pace of voice means how fast a person speaks (their speed of their voice). There are lots of different pace of voice and they are related to our emotions for example, faster pace indicates that a person is excited, angry, nervous, and anxious or in a hurry, this all depends looking at the person’s emotions and their body language. Slow pace is likely to be when someone is sad, depressed or tired.
Teachers use their skill pace of voice as a medium pace so that the children in the nursery are able to understand her and not get mixed up with other words. When Amy was upset and the teacher kind of knew that she was upset because of her facial expression so she called her over and asks her what was wrong and Amy’s pace of voice was really slow because she was upset that her friends wont play with her, so the teacher was really calm and had a very medium pace to be able to make Amy happy and understand that she was listening by responding with a positive pace of voice and by also helping her by having a chat with Amy and her friends together. But if the teacher had a very fast pace, that would make Amy feel that the teacher is just in a hurry and is not caring about her that she is upset and by doing this the teacher is not meeting Amy's needs by responding her with a very fast pace of voice which would confuse Amy.
Another example where pace of voice was used when another teacher was talking to a child with a hearing loop and her pace of voice was really fast as she was a new teacher and she didn’t know how to talk to the child so she spoke to the child in a very fast pace this is because the teacher was nervous as it was he first day of her job. The teacher who dealt with Amy could have spoke to the child with a hearing loop because she has more experience and she knows what kind of pace to use.

Clarifying:
Clarifying means checking understanding by repeating and summarising what the person is saying and also avoiding misunderstanding and this can be done when a person is talking to you and you check that what they are saying is right by using your own words.
In a nursery clarifying is used very effectively by the teachers, when reading a book to her class the teacher was summarising every page of the story and also clarifying, this is important because the children will understand and they won’t be confused about the story in the book, after reading the book she asked the children that what they think about the story she was doing that to check understanding, and what did they learn out of the story, this is important because the children will gain knowledge and will also understand the story, clarifying is important because the children have less knowledge and their language skills are developing so clarifying is a good way that a teacher can use to help them achieve their skills and also do better in their early years learning, this is why clarification is used when reading a book to children. But if she didn’t summarise and clarify the story this is not good because the children won’t get the story and they wouldn’t want that teacher to read the story and they won’t get interested in the story.

Posture:
Posture is how we stand and sit there are lots of negatives and positive postures for example, sitting with crossed arms is a negative posture and it shows that the person is not interested, leaning forward is a positive posture and it shows that the person is interested.
A teacher uses her posture in a very positive way to show the children that she is interested for example, when Ben pushed Joseph and he was crying, so the teacher was sitting with them both and was asking Ben why did he push him, and on other hand Joseph was sitting on her lap and she let him sit on her lap because he was crying and she was making Joseph feel valuable by claming him down, this kind of posture is good because the teacher is sitting with them both and she is having a conversation with Ben because he pushed him and she is also clarifying Ben about pushing Joseph, this is good because she is using both of her skills at the same time she is making a good posture by sitting together and at the same level as Ben and Joseph and she is showing that she is interested and want to help them and by clarifying she is solving their problems and who was wrong. But if she had a negative posture and she was standing instead of sitting this would have been bad because Joseph was crying and she is not the same height as Joseph and this shows that she is not caring for Joseph as he is crying and he would have to look up to her, and this will create problems and it shows that the teacher is not valuing Joseph.
