What are Giant Kangaroo Rats?
Giant Kangaroo rats are the largest of their entire species. They’re rodents that hop on their hind legs like a kangaroo. Their front legs are short and used for digging. They have big eyes, small ears, and a round body. They have buff-colored fur and a white stomach with stripes across the hindquarters. The tail is dark with white lines on either side. They are about 34.8 cm long. Their tail is about 19.4 cm. The Average weight for a male is 157g and for a female it is 151g. They belong to the kingdom Animalia, the phylum Chordata, the class Mammalia, the order Rodentia, the family Heteromyidae, the genus Dipodomys, and the species Kangaroo Rats.

On their habitat, no one is permitted to use the land to their benefits, Meaning people are not allowed to use the land for housing, growing crops, oil drilling, or any other human benefit. This will help to save the still existing land, by not allowing it to be destroyed. Experts are also trying to set aside land for the species to help replenish population in San Luis Obispo county and Kern County in California. What experts are trying to do here is put some of the remaining Giant Kangaroo Rats in other drylands so they can reproduce to reestablish population numbers. They are also trying properly maintain the species habitat. They are trying to put these creatures on private islands to guarantee protection and to monitor them and provide them with any of their necessary needs. This will help to protect the species from any predators, humans, or any other disasters that can occur with them being just off in the wild. By continuing to find more recovery strategies we can save a major keystone species that is the foundation of the Carrizo plain, and save many other species in the Carrizo Plain while we’re at
