There are a multitude of observations that can be made when analyzing the life of youth today, then of our parents in the 1960-70’s era. Economic and social transformations that have a direct impact on youth and how it is experienced today, particularly in the workplace, can be evaluated through the sociological concepts of Globalisation and Social Change which are noticeably intertwined in this analysis. We see in Australia that Globalisation has been a driver in exacerbating inequality in our society from that of the youth under the dependent age of 21 in the 1960-70’s era to now. Through the increase in worldly connectedness via technological communication and immigration we are met with diversity which has stimulated social change. Social …show more content…

To assess the effect globalization has had on work and organisations over time, the key speculations of Post-Fordism and Post-Industrialism theories will be considered. Fordism alludes to the principles proliferated by Henry Ford, that is, "a large scale manufacturing of uniform merchandise utilizing advances on a sequential construction system and the formation of a business opportunity for this, unvarying work schedules (Taylorism), and expanding efficiency through economies of scale, deskilling and escalation" (Ritzer, 2000). Fordism confronted its decrease in the 1970s and was substituted by Post-Fordism due to Globalisation’s influence upon consumer demand. Through an observation of social change in the value of work, job switches are considered a transient phenomenon where you work for some year and in two to four years you move to another job. However, to challenge the negative stigma, due to competitiveness influenced by globalisation - companies are under pressure financially and seek layoffs, downsizing, restructuring. As a result, workers are retrenched and the general degree of confidence in job security is rather low so many stay on the alert for new job possibilities. For example, LinkedIn allows you to seek jobs through your professional profile and hide yourself from your current employer in the process. Furthermore, the Youth today have emphasized greater importance towards health and friendships (Woodman and Wyn) as opposed to job security and money.
