...people. Finally, he chooses Death to become his son’s godfather because Death does not discriminate against any man or woman. When the boy grew older, Death made his godson a famous doctor by showing him an herb that would allow him to save any patient. Though, this act came with conditions; his godson was to administer the herb to those that Death stood by the head of. However, if Death stood by the feet of a patient, his godson was to claim that there was nothing he could do and allow them to die and if he went against the will of Death, there would be severe consequences. The godson became very famous after following these conditions, but one day he chose to ignore Death’s decision and give the herb to a dying king. Death forgave him because he was his godson, but gave him a warning. Time passed until the king’s daughter became ill. Once again, the godson ignored the will of Death and gave her the herb. With this decision, Death said that it was now his godson’s time to die. Death brought his godson to a cave where he showed candles that reflect the lifelines of all people. The godson asked to see his candle, and was shown a very short one that appeared to be flickering out. He begged for a new one to be lit and Death acted as if he would grant his godson’s wish. He then purposefully knocks the candle over and the godson...

...An Analysis of the Symbolism in Brothers Grimm “Godfather Death” In literature, symbolism is used to suggest an underlying meaning in a story. In the story of “Godfather Death,” a quite ironic title, the Grimm brothers used a multitude of symbols to convey the story’s moral value. The Grimm brothers used seven symbols in this story. All of them play a part in conveying the message that death cannot be defied, death is constant, and death is fair. The father in this story searches for a godfather for his thirteenth child, a son. The first person he comes to is God. He sees God as unfair and biased toward poor people. He states he does not want him as the godfather because he feels God does not disperse wealth equally; this stems from him being poor and having twelve and now a thirteenth child. As the father comes across the Devil as his next choice, he discredits the Devil by saying “you trick men and lead them astray” (Grimm 12). To speculate on this, the father may have had an experience with the devil himself, or his beliefs may stem from biblical readings. The next possible suitor is Death. The father accepts Death as the god father; Death treats all people equally and does not discriminate. Poor and rich alike are taken without biases by Death. The father thinks this is Hunt 2 the one to be the godfather based on his own opinions of how good, evil, and death are represented. There are several noteworthy symbols in this story. To...

...stand. The only choice she had was to crawl and kneel even if it was painful. She crawled and kneels for Grant so in the future, he wouldn’t have to crawl for his education. This shows the deeper meaning of having to sacrifice yourself for the people you love. Hence, for others to stand, you have to put yourself down for the sake of others. Therefore, the central symbol in the novel is kneeling/ crawling. Moreover, the central symbol of the novel, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines is kneeling/ crawling. Grant kneels and asks Jefferson to eat Miss Emma’s cooking. On page 190-191, “‘Jefferson, I want us to be friends,’ I said. ‘Not only you and me but I want you to be friends with your nannan. I want you to be more than a godson to her. A godson obeys, but a friend- well a friend would do anything to please a friend.’ . . . ‘It would mean so much to her if you would eat some of the gumbo.’ . . . ‘Will you be her friend? Will you eat some of the gumbo? Just a bit? One spoonful?” This quote shows Grant crawling for Miss Emma so she can stand. Grant understands that Miss Emma is running out of time, she wants to see Jefferson stand before she goes. In the past, Miss Emma has made many sacrifices by crawling and kneeling for Grant and Jefferson, she can no longer crawl and kneel. This metaphically shows that she has given so much to other that she has no more strength to kneel. For the first time someone crawls and gives back to Miss Emma for all she has done by crawling and...

He has spent most of his life away from his parents. He and his aunt are quite passive aggressive towards each other....

...the truth, and loves you. It’s hard now a day to find someone with those qualities. But I am a very lucky lady that I have not only one best friend but two, who I can talk to and rely on on any given day or time. Those two best friends of mine would have to be my sisters, Jasmine and Jamie. I can go to them for anything, give me the best advice and nothing better then sharing clothes with each other. Considering we all live in different towns and states we always make the time to catch up with what is happening with our personal lives. We all get along great, sometimes we have our ups and downs but we always put that past us. Jasmine is the mother figure. She is the oldest and considering herself as a mother with a four year old son, my godson, and a sixteen month old niece, she definitely makes sure my other sister and myself don’t make the wrong decisions and calls us at least once a week just to see how everything is. Jasmine always enjoys my company and our sleepovers. I know there is only one best friend that people say you can only have, but I don’t follow that at all. My other sister Jamie, the middle sibling is by far the stuck up one. But Jasmine and I know how to put up with her. I would have to call her more of a best friend because she will tell me whether something is good or not or if she likes or doesn’t like anything and she’s not the type of person to hid her feelings. Sometimes you rarely get the truth from a friend. I am more then proud to have my best...

...from 1933 to 1945. The German Party in charge at the time, the Nazis, murdered approximately six million European Jews in one of the worst genocides of the Jews. There have been large debates over whether Judaism is a religion, a race, a culture/ethnic group, a nation or a family. The best way to describe Judaism, in my eyes, would be that the Jewish people are a family and Judaism is a religion. The Torah (which is read by chanting) and the Tanakh, the first five books of the Jewish Bible and the Jewish Bible, explain that the main patriarch, Abram (Abraham) followed G-d’s instruction that he should leave his country, family and beliefs and in return G-d would make his family into the largest nation and they would be blessed. Abraham’s godson Jacob (or Israel) had 12 children, and Jewish people believe that they fathered all the Jews in the world, making them essentially a family. There are 13 Principles of Faith* that religious Jews follow. Judaism focuses mostly on the relationships between the creator, mankind and the land of Israel. They view Israel as the Holy Land. Analyse Reflect What surprised and challenged me during the service was the amount of singing. I love singing, but all the singing was in Hebrew, which I couldn’t understand, though I did try. I tried to sing some of the words just by following how the people pronounced the words and from reading the actual words, not the symbols in the prayer book, but eventually gave up, thinking it was more polite and respectful...

...contributions from other members. NATO is focusing on the deterrence of western forces, when it should first be focusing on the stability and economic state of its allies instead. Canada is doing a great job of supporting this idea through Article 2, but other countries have done otherwise. In a way, Canada has not seriously benefitted from being a member of NATO because of this. Joseph Godson argues that NATO’s “real issue is to restart the engines of economic growth before everyone succumbs to a disastrous cycle of protectionism.” In other words, NATO is too interested in its own defence from any potential threats instead of worrying about its ally’s stability and economic growth. Canada is clearly seeing this through all of their contributions and mutual aid, but its allies are not. If the focus was on economic collaboration, all of the countries in NATO could work together towards achieving stability, and in return could then do a better job of defending themselves primarily because of their own economic state instead of relying on other countries mutual aid, specifically Canada in this case. Godson says; “The opportunities are still there: to do great things together in the interest of democracy and peace. Surely we can find the...

...On the day of his only daughter's wedding, Vito Corleone hears requests in his role as the Godfather, the Don of a New York crime family. Vito's youngest son, Michael, in a Marine Corps uniform, introduces his girlfriend, Kay Adams, to his family at the sprawling reception. Vito's godson Johnny Fontane, a popular singer, pleads for help in securing a coveted movie role, so Vito dispatches his consigliere, Tom Hagen, to Los Angeles to influence the abrasive studio head, Jack Woltz. Woltz is unmoved until the morning he wakes up in bed with the severed head of his prized stallion. Shortly before Christmas 1945, drug baron Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo, backed by the Corleones' rivals, the Tattaglias, asks Vito for investment in the emerging drug trade and protection through his political connections. Vito disapproves of drug dealers, so he sends his enforcer, Luca Brasi, to spy on them. The family then receives two fish wrapped in Brasi's vest, imparting that he "sleeps with the fishes". An assassination attempt by Sollozzo's men lands Vito in the hospital, so his eldest son, Sonny, takes command. Sollozzo kidnaps Hagen to pressure Sonny to accept his deal. ...Explain both the general principles of utilitarianism and the distinctive features of Mill's utilitarianism Utilitarianism says that the result or the consequence of an act is the real measure of whether it is good or bad. This theory emphasizes ends over means. It is therefore, a teleological or deontological ethics theory. Teleological ethics determines whether an action is right or wrong depending on the consequence or end result. Deontological, on the other hand, is when the actions are intrinsically right or wrong due to an absolute law and the outcome doesn’t matter, even if it is good. The theory of utilitarianism was devised by Jeremy Bentham, the English philosopher (1748-1832). He was born in London during the big time of the great scientific and social change. Jeremy Bentham wrote The Principles of Morals and Legislation. This is where he presented the ethical theory. This theory can be divided into three parts: 1. His view on what drove human beings, and what goodness and badness was all about. 2. The principle of utility, which is his moral rule. 3. The hedonic calculus, which is his system for measuring how good or bad a consequence is. Bentham claimed that human beings were motivated by pleasure and pain. This is why he can be called a hedonist. In Principles of Morals and Legislation, he said, ‘nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure. It is for them alone to point out what we ought to do, as well as...

...Building an Enjoyable Workplace --Case of “The Road to Hell” What’s happened? The case “The Road to Hell” is a story of two individuals with different backgrounds and points of view having different interpretations of an interview. John Baker is a successful western chief engineer of the Barracania’s branch of a multinational company. He is an English expatriate, and had served his 23 years with Continental Ore in many different places which made him quite confident in understanding a regional staff’s psychology and knowing exactly how to get along with locals. On the other hand, Rennalls is an assistant engineer and one of the brightest Barracanian prospects on the staff of Caribbean Bauxite. He graduated with honors from London University and he is also the son of the minister of finance and economic planning, which made him especially sensitive to political and racial issues involving relations between his culture and western influence. Through the interview, Baker tried to solve a complaint that he has received from Mr. Jackson – one of the European employees who reported that Rennalls had been rude toward him. While the misinterpretation occurs during their communication process and finally the interview ended up in a disaster. What cause the disaster? The primary cause of the problem, in my opinion, is that John compared the Barracanians experience to the European experience. In the case he mentioned that, “My ancestors have all been...
