Higher Education. a Split Decison

...Zack Buckway Mrs. Finder English 1010 15 October 2014 Higher Education. A Split Decision Universities extend back centuries and have played a huge role in expanding the minds of its attendants. Universities like Oxford or Cambridge were established near to as early as the 1100s, but they were not sanctioned until deemed by a Pope or King soon after. While this great honor of recognition brought a good rep with it, it also came with a price to the masters and their apprentices. Although the system today is quite modernized and is commonly available to all, scholars of the highest degree were the only participants, save it be the masters, of such study in the early days of college. This is also due to the fact that the general population was illiterate. Time passed on and shortly thereafter, universities were beginning to spread like wildfire throughout the nations and the ability to attend such institutions passed down to those who were wealthy or intelligent enough to be accepted. Masters with their students were the leaders of such centers, and they were free to delve into any subject they wished until the desire to become recognized grew. Recognition esteemed them to be great but at such a cost that they studied theology more intently than the liberal arts in order for them to catch the Pope’s eye. Fortunate for education, it progressed far passed theology to explore into the depths of science, reasoning, and technology which came much later in time. Fast forward a...

Persuasive Essay

...Sushmita Das December 11, 2015 Period: 6 AP English 3 Persuasive Essay #10 College is that step into adulthood. You live on your own, make decisions by yourself, and etc. Many college students have the burden of student loans. On top of that they want to work hard for good grades. Making one mistake in college can honestly affect you for the rest of your life. Classes and teachers are way tougher than they are in high school. So do you think it is really necessary to have them do extra community service? College students should not be required to do community service. First, college students shouldn’t be allowed to do community service because of keeping up with a good academic record. Grades are an important factor in college. You honestly can’t afford to slack off. Statistics states,” 75% of college students suffer from major anxiety”. Focusing is a major priority for all your classes if you want to strive for good grades. You need to work consistently on reports or essays and study so that the material is a known thing to you. As a matter of fact, college students shouldn't be allowed to do community service because of limit of time with students who do sports. Most people don’t go to college just for education but to pursuit of a sport with a scholarship. A NYU student stated, “I have a scholarship for crew and practices are at least 5 hours, I have barely have no time for school work let alone do anything else”. “I also have to maintain...

Great Essay Presentation

...Tips for a Great College Essay Why write an essay? The purpose of the essay is to convince admission officers whom you’ve never met, in less than ten minutes, that you would be a good match for their colleges. At the most basic level, it allows admission officers to evaluate your communication and writing skills. In addition, the essay allows admission officers to discover more about you as a person – a side of you not shown by statistics like grades and SATs. The essay gives information about your history, attitudes, interests and creativity; it gives a sense of your values and goals. What admission officers are doing is creating a community…looking to see how you would fit in that community, what would you bring to that community and what sets you apart. How the essay is evaluated • • • Is your writing mechanically sound? Is your writing style comfortable? Can you write a good sentence? Can you write a good paragraph? Do you address the question asked? Can you form a thesis? Can you discuss a theme? Is your argument logical? Can you get in and out of the essay with some finesse? Do you write with style, nuance and creativity? Do you write with a distinctive voice? Choosing a topic Choose the essay topic that appeals to you most. The topic is less important than your delivery Remember: there is no right or wrong answer. The college just wants to know who you are and how your mind works. There are several ideas concerning community values and that strong leadership is needed to support this claim. Researching this idea with a book titled Remix Reading & Composing Culture. The passages tie into my belief of strong leadership having to be linked to the assumption that communities accept us for who we are. I explored these essays, and commencement address to support my views in a creative way. An essay titled “It Takes a Tribe” speaks of college life and fraternities. ...my future business endeavour. I have found that after so long out of the education system it has been a difficult transition juggling study and work. The first units that were chosen for me in study period 2, I thought were difficult to understand having never written an essay before and without the knowledge or know how, I was not able to complete these units. SSK12 has given me a good understanding of what it takes at becoming a university student and in particular the skills on writing essays. As I have mentioned previously up until study period 2, I had never written an essay and did not fully comprehend how important the set out of a university essay was. Choosing an Essay Question was an important part of my learning in week 6 because this has now given me the beginning step in writing a university essay using the correct format. I am feeling a lot more confident when approaching the subject of essays as I now understand and have the knowledge on the procedure in completing an academic essay and what is required. I now know that by firstly choosing a question will then help you to with your thesis and this in turn will give you your main idea and sets the way in which to write your essay. During the time that I was employed by the government it was necessary for me to constantly refer to certain policies and procedures on a daily basis. I was able to use the marking text system to allow me easy reference by indicated the pages with tabs and then within the...

Library Experience

...Name: Lisa Course: 1300 Date: Friday, October 11, 2013 My Library Experience Coming to Houston Community College was a huge blur for me. No one told me it was going to be a confusing mess. Also, no one told me the people working there were not friendly and were not helpful; I had to find that out by myself. I had no idea what college was going to be like. The only thing that I found helpful was going to The Leaning Hub class and learning about the library and how they work. Coming to The Learning Hub class showed me ways that I can get information on books, find books, and get a book transferred to a campus close to me. Upon going to The Learning Hub class, I though Houston Community College’s libraries were regular city libraries. Once I got into The Learning Hub class I found out that that was completely wrong. As I sat there listening to Mr. Hord talk about how to begin to look for a book, I found that being in a library at a HCC was going to be the most helpful place in college. When looking for a book at a Houston Community College Library you have to begin with what the title or topic the novel is written about, then go online at the Houston Community College library homepage and type the topic or title in. Once you find the novel you are looking for you can check and see which campuses hold the book, you can see if it is in transit, checked out or requested. If the novel is there at the campus you are at, there is a call number that you can use to find your...

How to Prevent Drinking and Driving

...In my community drinking and driving has become a big issue. Many people drink and drive every weekend. People have to know that it is wrong, so why do people do it? There are many ways that accidents can be prevented from drinking and driving. We just need to think of ways that will stop people from drinking and driving and have an alternative for them to turn to. Caroline county is a small town with nothing to do. People have to drive thirty minutes at least out of their way just to keep themselves entertained. One option that we can do to stop people from drinking and driving would be to build a movie theater, everyone loves the movies. The movie theater would be a place for families, kids and teenagers to go, even a place for couples to go on dates. This would stop people from going to parties more and from drinking and driving. Another option could be a shopping outlet. It is something fun to do and everyone loves new clothes. The outlets could be open until eleven o’clock so then it would be too late for people to go out and drink. In the outlets there could be restaurants, nail places, clay bakers and an arcade so everything that a person needed would be right there in one spot. If we had a bowling alley in our community than people could get a group of friends together and be able to go midnight bowling. This would keep people from drinking and going to parties later. They could make just a teens night at the bowling alley and just an adults night. That way teenagers...
