How Can Educators Reach Students With Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy is a disorder that can effect a student's vision, hearing and ability to speak as well as other disabilities. Students with Cerebral Palsy are a special group of students and making sure teachers are getting through to these students in very challenging. Students that are unable to use their senses may have difficulty understanding in a general classroom setting. According to studies that were done about three to four children for every 1000 children born have some form of Cerebral Palsy (Bruan, 2012). This comes down to three tenths of a percent of all students. Even though this may seem like a small number if a school has one student that has this then the school needs …show more content…
There are tool to figure out what problem the student has with mobility and intelligence. One of the tools to find what level of mobility is the Gross Motor Function Classification System. This system has five different steps to show what scale the student is at when it comes to how independent then student is. The first step the least restricted step. The student is able to walk without using hands for support and can run and jump. The second step the student can climb stairs but needs to use a railing and has trouble with uneven surfaces. The third step the student can walk with a device such as a walker and may need a wheel chair for long distances. The fourth step the student will need to use a wheelchair most of the time and may be able to transfer to and from the wheelchair without assistance. The fifth step is the most advanced step with the student having little to no independence. The student cannot sit or stand by themselves and might not have control of movements. This system can be very beneficial to a teacher in knowing exactly what state the student is in. The intelligence test used is called the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test. This test can show what a student understands and how good is the student's short term memory. In order for the teacher to fully have an understand of how to teach the student. The teacher needs to understand what the student is capable of doing and what they need help with. Since Cerebral Palsy can affect student physically and mentally the teacher really need to accommodate for both. According to Hustad and Smith (2015), "the incorporation of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is one aspect of a larger focus on supporting and developing a child’s full range of communication skills."
