Misattribution and Suggestability

...long after they occur or are purported to have occurred because memories are not fixed and can be altered or reinterpreted each time we recall them. Misattribution is a common thing in memories, a result of our brain trying to fill in the missing information, or using general characteristics that do not always paint an accurate picture. Common examples of this are remembering a person or piece of information, but incorrectly remembering where you met them or learned that fact. Source memory is the part of memory where we can recall the surroundings of that memory origin. Misattribution can occur in traumatic memories with inaccurate results and cause serious consequences for innocent people. Or on the other hand allow someone who is guilty to escape justice because a whiteness is “sure” of a false memories accuracy. On a more day-to-day basis it can lead to thinking you’ve already communicated information to someone, or thinking you left the garage door open. Susceptibility refers to the minds ability in some cases to create false memories based on outside input, usually false information or suggestive questions that lead the respondent toward a false piece of a memory. An example of this would be referring to a small fictional detail in a person’s factual memory. Such as did you see the blimp at last night’s football game? Studies on suggestibility have shown an alarmingly high rate of people will assimilate these false pieces of information into their real memory or create...

Hamlet a Nobel Prince

Hamlet

...Shakespeare exposes Hamlet’s flaws as a heroic character. The tragedy in this play is the result of the main character’s unrealistic ideals and his inability to overcome his weakness of indecisiveness. This fatal attribute led to the death of several people which included his mother and the King of Denmark. Although he is described as being a brave and intelligent person, his tendency to procrastinate prevented him from acting on his father’s murder, his mother’s marriage, and his uncle’s ascension to the throne. Hamlet thinking this trait was genetic, speaks of his father’s tragic flaw that would ultimately lead to his death. So, oft it chances in particular men, That for some vicious mole of nature in them, As, in their birth, wherein they are not guilty (Since nature cannot choose his origin), By the o’ergrowth of some complexion, Oft breaking down the pales and forts of reason, Or by some habit that too much o’er-leavens The form of plausive manners—that these men, Carrying, I say, the stamp of one defect, Being nature’s livery, or fortune’s star, Their virtues else, be they as pure as grace, Shall in the general censure take corruption From that particular fault. The dram of evil Doth all the noble substance of a doubt Hamlet makes reference to the one deficiency that is his specific fault. Here again, Shakespeare attempts to justify Hamlet’s inability to act decisively. He writes, “As, in their birth, wherein they are not guilty (Act1 Scene 1...

Deaths Progression in Hamlet

...okay to mourn his death, he is also stating that it is wise for the entire kingdom to move on from this quickly. By saying this, Claudius is trying to cover up the murder of Hamlet Sr., and make it seem like it never happened. Claudius is guilty for this, and that is why he has decided to try his best to make everyone in the kingdom forget about the death so he doesn’t get caught. Hamlet is a magnificent tragedy that is full of betrayal, revenge and a lot of revengeful death. Written by William Shakespeare, Hamlet takes place in England in the year of 1602. After his father dies, Hamlet’s life becomes more troubled because of the deaths of many of the people in his life that followed. He goes insane, which could very well be Hamlet’s cover up for showing his true feelings about his father’s death. The nature and progression of death in Hamlet is a large theme that overpowers many of the characters within the play. The death of Hamlet Sr. is a major influence in all of the other deaths that occur in the play because of how it affected all of the people of Denmark. The deaths of Hamlet Sr., Polonius, Claudius, and Ophelia all play a huge part in the death of Hamlet. The accidental death of Ophelia and Laertes father, Polonius shows Hamlet’s dedication and persistence in killing the murderer of his father....

Blame Game

...heartbroken Danish prince embarks on a journey in avenging his farther who was murdered by his uncle. Claudius, Hamlet’s greedy uncle, is the root cause of much agony in Elsinore but can the audience really hold him solely responsible for the tragedies which befell the other characters? The answer is that Claudius’ treachery was the catalyst of all disorder in the play but, Polonius and Hamlet himself are also to blame. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Polonius’ tendency to overthink and meddle in others’ business leads to the death of several characters. Whether your intentions are good and your heart is in the right place is besides the fact that you are at fault for any and all trouble you cause. When Polonius says, “Ay, springes to catch woodcocks. I do know, when the blood burns, how prodigal the soul lends the tongue vows” (1.3.115-17), he tells his daughter Ophelia that Hamlet does not really love her but is deceiving her as a means of seduction. As a result, he orders her to quit making herself available for him. This sniveling behaviour ends up setting a new tone for the rest of the play. Once Hamlet secretly puts up an act of insanity in his pursuit to kill Claudius, Polonius offers advice to both Gertrude and Claudius when they speculate the reason for Hamlet’s madness. He says “he took the fruits of my advice; and he, repelled” (2.2.136-37), advising them that Hamlet’s insanity was a result of Ophelia no longer accepting his affection. Rather than letting the king and queen...

Literary Essay Hamlet

...Unit 3 activity 7 FINAL The soliloquy in act 4 scene 4 that starts with “how all occasions do inform against me” echoes a monologue recited to Hamlet’s two friends, Rozencratz and Guildenstern. The monologue earlier in the story paints the picture that Hamlet is still struggling with his thoughts of all the events that are happening and he is still unsure of what to do. He is adamant that murdering his uncle is against his character so he finds himself in a dilemma. Following the soliloquy in act 4, the Elizabethan audience is left with a favourable scenario. The lords would favor his philosophical thought process and the lower classes would favor the anticipation of bloody mess end of the act brings. The main reason for this is Hamlet’s soliloquy. This soliloquy serves as a continuation of the monologue to show the audience that Hamlet is getting over all that and is finally set on his mission. It also serves to show the audience how Hamlet came to those final decisions and gives the audience something to be excited for. As Hamlet approaches his destination England, he comes across Fortinbras marching with his army to Poland to fight a way for merely nothing. Hamlet in shock claims that man will fight and act so violently for something of little gain. This encounter reminds Hamlet of what he has to gain from his plan of murdering the king. Following this encounter is when Hamlet recites the soliloquy mentioned before. It is at this point that Hamlet realizes that his duty...

Gertrude in Hamlet

...should’ve been more conscious and sensitive towards his feelings and refrained from having a relationship with Claudius. Claudius is the brother of King Hamlet and Gertrude should’ve realized how embarrassed her son Hamlet would be in the aftermath because it was considered to be incest for a widow to marry her husband's brother. But Gertrude is not in touch with Hamlet's feelings to know why he is angry. He expresses his anger during his first soliloquy: “O most wicked speed: to post With such dexterity to incestuous sheets, It is not, nor it cannot come to good, But break my heart, for I must hold my tongue.” (I.ii. 156-159) Gertrude lacks awareness and therefore is unable to realize that her marriage to Claudius hurt her son and is seen as incest to him and others. She figured that if she’d waited to remarry, it would’ve given Hamlet time to grieve and he would’ve had a different reaction to the situation at hand. She doesn't accept Hamlet's reasoning that she shouldn’t have married Claudius in the first place. Gertrude reacts in a nonchalant manner after watching the play. She doesn’t appear guilty about the incestuous relationship. Instead, she has quite a pragmatic approach to the Player Queen: "The lady doth protest too much, methinks"...
