There are as many as one trillion different organisms that live here on earth. However, the organism that will be discussed in this piece is the Harp Seal, also known as the Saddleback Seal or the Greenland Seal. The Harp Seal’s binomial nomenclature is Pagophilus groenlandicus. These Harp Seals are located in the North Atlantic Ocean as well as the Arctic Ocean. It is a mammal that goes in both water and on land. You may recognize Harp Seals as those cute fluffy white creatures, but in reality, that coat only lasts about three to four weeks, or about a month. Those currents help cycle the nutrients from the sea to the shore. Another benefit of the Harp Seal is providing prey for other predators such as polar bears, sharks and orcas. If these hunters didn't have prey, it would disrupt the food chain. Harp Seals are not threatening or dangerous to humans, which makes them all the more likable. They prefer solitude unless its breeding or molting season, then they go into groups. There are cases where Harp Seals will approach scuba divers due to curiosity, but there are no reports of any attacks from those interactions, proving even more that they aren’t a threat. Another interesting fact about the Harp Seal is that it’s pretty easy to avoid danger. They can dive 1,300 feet deep into the ocean, making it difficult for hunters above ground to get them.
