Healthy People 2020 initiative is to identify our Nation’s health improvement priorities. For more than 30 years, Healthy People has established evidence-based national health objectives with well-defined targets that allow us to watch progress, encourage action, and direct efforts to improve health care across the nation.

Healthy people 2020 as I understand, main objective, is to improve access to comprehensive quality health care. Access to comprehensive, quality health care services is so important for upholding and maintaining one’s health, inhibiting and management of disease, decreasing unnecessary disabilities and early death, and also attaining health equality for everyone ("Access to Health Services").

Diabetes Health Campaign Part 1

...has reached epidemic proportions. In the United States approximately 23.6 million people are affected by diabetes making diabetes the 7th leading cause of death (Healthy People 2020, 2012). Diabetes is a disease that results in the body either not producing or not using insulin properly. Complications from uncontrolled diabetes can result in devastating effects on almost every system in the body. Diabetes is so prevalent that the disease has become a national health objective in the Healthy People 2020 agenda. In 2010 North Carolina had approximately 700,000 adults with a diagnosis of diabetes (North Carolina Division of Public Health, 2011). The unfortunate reality is that approximately one-third of the people in North Carolina have not yet been diagnosed and the screening test, a simple blood test, has only been utilized by approximately 60% of North Carolinians (North Carolina Division of Public Health, 2011). Diabetes is a very costly disease and plays havoc on a person’s body. In this paper the subject of discussion is the public health issue of diabetes and its effect on the communities and population of North Carolina. Diabetes and Healthy People 2020 Healthy people 2020 continues the three decades old national program that is scientifically based and identifies national goals and objective that span over a 10 year period (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). Healthy People work to improve health, health promotion, and disease prevention for everyone in...

Chronic diseases are also an issue with one in two adults having at least one chronic health condition (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). To reduce the obesity rates and chronic diseases for the future generation, promoting a healthy lifestyle from childhood years is highly recommended. Healthy People 2020

...overall health status Equality in Access to health services is one of the forty two topic areas in Healthy People 2020 that caught my view as one of the objectives to have the highest importance in achieving a national goal of healthy Americans in the future. But what does access to health care actually means? According Gulliford et al (2002), facilitating access to health is concerned with helping people to command appropriate health care resources in order to preserve or improve their health status but unfortunately gaining access to healthcare depends on some factors such as financial, organizational and social or cultural barriers that permits or limit the said utilization of services. Therefore having much available health services is not a factor in itself to improve the quality of healthcare but the utilization of such services by all of the people which will depend on affordability and general accessibility of the service. According to Healthy People 2020 (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2012), it is important to have access to quality health care service in order to achieve equity in health and eventually improve the general health status of all Americans. This I think is one of the most important move that the state should make in order to make the vision of having healthy Americans, including all migrants, ethnic and minority groups, by the year 2020. Though free service is not always the key to have access to quality healthcare the state can definitely...

Health Promotion: Reduction of Stroke Deaths

...it related to personal health behaviors (U.S. Preventative Services Task Force, 2011). This paper will examine the Healthy People 2020 objective HDS-3, Reducing Stroke Deaths (U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2011), and how the promotion of this objective has progressed since it’s Healthy People 2010, 12-7, predecessor. History The Healthy People initiative was introduced in 1979, by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), in an effort to provide a systematic approach to improving health (Koh, 2010). The plans, known as HP 1990-Promoting Health/Preventing Disease (Centers for Disease Control, 2011), Healthy People 2000, Healthy People 2010 and the current Healthy People 2020 have focused on identifying health priorities and aligning the strategies to effectively implement those strategies. The goals related to each version of the initiative have changed, as have the number of objectives/measures. HP 1990 goals were to decrease mortality in infants and adults and to increase the independence among older adults while the Healthy People 2020 goals were aimed at: - attaining high quality, longer lives - achieving health equity, eliminating disparities - creating social and physical environments that promote good health - promoting quality of life, healthy development, healthy behaviors (Centers for Disease Control, 2011) Literature Review One can see that the earlier goals were focused...

C228 Task 1

...Linn County Oregon is located in the center of the Willamette Valley and covers 2,309 miles,19 of which are water (US Cesnus Bureau, 2015). It is the grass seed capitol of the world, and thus has a strong, rural culture. According to the US Census Bureau it has a population of 119, 356 people, and there are two hospitals available to serve this population. Because it is a large area with 37% of its residents living in a rural setting, transportation can be problematic. Unfortunately, over 20% of Linn County’s residents live at or below the poverty level and the large outlying area combined with this number can make access to health care a challenge (CityData.com, 2012). Population Economic Status Linn County Oregon consists of 119,356 people with an average household income of $45, 130 for two people. There is 20.5% of the population living below the poverty level and 19.7% of that total is under the age of 18. There is not a lot of cultural diversity in this area, as 93.4% of the population is White, followed by 8.4% Hispanic, and 1.3% Native American. Of that, 18.9% of the White population is living in poverty, 33.3% of the Hispanics, and 43.3% of the Native American’s also live at or below the poverty level (City-Data.com, 2012). Working in an Emergency Department, I see a large amount of the population that uses public assistance, as there tends to be the thought process that it is okay to use the ED for primary care. Twenty-five percent of the population is receiving...

Windshield Survey

...is community focused rather than treating the individual. Phase one begins with identifying a community. Phase two is the assessment phase consisting of data collection, interpretation, and analysis. The collection of direct data may be done through focus groups, interviews, observation, and windshield surveys. Drug sales and use is visible throughout the Denver area, and the types of illicit drugs used goes well beyond medical marijuana. As I drove around performing my windshield survey, I witnessed people on the street handing money to another person and orally taking what they were given in exchange, and others would put what they were given into their pockets. Marijuana is openly used and rarely questioned. According to the National Drug Intelligence Center (2007), much of the drug-related crime consists of “assaults, home invasions, homicides, and robberies” (para. 1). The community health nurse could decrease the amount of drug use and sales in the area by educating the residents of the area and organizing neighborhood watch groups. This can empower the residents of the area to take a stand and work with law enforcement to decrease the drug activity in the area. The homeless rate in Denver is increasing because of loss of jobs, and the moderate weather draws homeless people from other areas to reside in Denver. There are shelters and food resources available, but during my windshield survey I witnessed the astronomical number of homeless waiting in line only to...

Taco Bell has encountered some bad rep and lost customers due to the traces of E. coli bacteria in 2006, 2009, and 2013 which led to customers being hospitalized. This led to multiple Taco Bells closing across the country. In 2007, Taco Bell reports of rodent infestation were found in a Manhattan location. Most of the food on Taco Bell’s menu is high in fat and has many calories which eliminate the health conscious people from buying their food. Another weakness is how the franchises are managed. Opportunities – Taco Bell has many opportunities to better itself and to gain more customers. The company has recently been developing new flavors and recipes that focus on being healthy and using better quality ingredients. They...
