...Assignment 1: Hershey’s Sweet Mission Rose-Marie Waters Dr. Robert Waldo Human Resource Management Foundations – HRM 500 Week 3: April 22 – April 28, 2013 Recommend the redesign of Hershey’s performance management system to appeal to the diverse groups that it employs. Hershey has redesigned its performance management system to appeal to their diverse group of employees, specifically the “millennials”, by implementing a “bottom up” style of performance management. Millennial generation employees are defined by their birthdate. A millennial refers to someone who was born after 1980. Currently, this group comprises one-third of the American workforce and will soon become the majority as they come of age. Millennials have expressed a desire to pursue work that is personally meaningful; they resist corporate hierarchy, are eager for challenge, desire autonomy, and are accustomed to getting work done in a variety of environments. When corporations like Hershey understand what motivates employees, like the millennials, they are better able to set mutual expectations for success. This is what Hershey has embraced with the bottom up performance management system. This bottom up approach allows employees to set their own goals and track progress on projects throughout the year. (Noe 2011, pg. 56) In order for the bottom up system to be effective the employee must understand the company’s goals and the strategy for achieving those goals. Employees must also understand what...

A few of the names of candies they produce are the Hershey Kiss, Almond Joy, Mounds, Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kat, and other candies. Recommend the redesign of Hershey’s performance management system to appeal to the diverse groups that it employs. Hershey currently employs a diverse group of employees. Hershey’s current management system is effective and has helped in the success of the company’s revenue. The current management system relies on the baby boomers and the younger employees to train or be mentors for new employees. The new employees usually are in the early twenties and are eager to learn the details of their job. Although the current management system is working, the ever changing labor force brings about a large number of individuals whom are willing to work and able to work. Older people want to work as, so does this mean that Hershey will not considering an older person for employment with their company? Older people are willing and able to learn new technology (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, and Wright 2011). Despite myths to the contrary, worker performance and learning do not suffer as a result of aging (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, and Wright 2011). Performance management system should be designed to take into consideration what makes a job of...

...Hershey's Sweet Mission Strayer University Human Resource Management Foundation HRM 500 Dr. Brett Gordon April 20, 2011 Hershey's Sweet Mission Introduction There has clearly been an evolution of the workforce as we knew it. There have been a number of factors that have contributed to these changes. Some of which are changes in the economy, company restructuring, globalization and technology. The changes in the workforce have led to the complete revision in the culture of some organizations. Now let’s take a look at some of the changes we have seen within the workforce. One major shift that we see in the modernized workforce is a change in demographics. There has been an increase in diversity of the workforce including age, race, ethnicity and gender. Another difference we have seen is the change in skills required to perform jobs. Technology has played a role in changing the way jobs are performed, the length of time it takes to complete a job, and the knowledge required to do the job. Organizations have had to find ways to manage the changes in the workforce in order to remain competitive in today’s marketplace. In this paper we will look at the Hershey Company, and ways that it has utilized to help manage these changes. We will look at ways to redesign Hershey’s performance management system to include diversity. We will also look at Hershey’s value system particularly focusing on how employees could interpret them in relation to their...

Founded in 1894 by Milton Hershey, the Hershey Company has managed to withstand the ever changing economy and manage its workforce in a way that has resulted in extreme success. Companies often undergo organizational restructure as a means to keep up with today’s shifting workforce and in an effort to attract and maintain the best talent. Especially in the United States, which is now being considered the world’s melting pot, the workforce is becoming much more diverse and great effort is required to address these changes. This paper discusses recommendations for the redesign of Hershey’s performance management system in order to appeal to its diverse workforce. Also discussed is how an employee would interpret the Hershey Company’s values in relation to their role. Workforce trends will be examined and how they could impact Hershey. Finally, the mentoring program that Hershey has implemented will be discussed along with the effects that this program has on integrating the culture at the Hershey Company. Recommend the redesign of Hershey’s performance manageir ment system to appeal to the diverse groups that it employs. ...“Hershey’s Sweet Mission” Instructor: Matthew Gonzalez Course: Human Resource Management Foundation Date: April 19, 2012 Abstract In my formal research I will recommend the redesign of Hershey’s performance management system to appeal to the diverse groups that it employs. I will analyze how I would interpret the values that Hershey embraces in relation to my role, if I were a Hershey employee. My research will also discuss the trends identified in the chapter and describe which one may impact Hershey the most. Lastly, I will describe the effects that mentoring could have on integrating values into the Hershey culture. Recommend the redesign of Hershey’s performance management system to appeal to the diverse groups that it employs. Because Hershey’s employs such diverse groups it could benefit from knowledge workers. Organizations need a management style that focuses on developing and empowering employees. (Noe, 2011) Knowledge workers are employees whose key contribution to the organization is specialized knowledge, such as knowledge of customers, a process or a profession. Employees are then held accountable for products and services, and in return share losses and rewards. (Noe, 2011) When an organization competes for employees, depend on skilled knowledge workers, or are in need of a workforce that cares about customer’s satisfaction...

...Assignment 1: Hershey’s Sweet Mission Lauren Edmondson Dr. Matthew Gonzalez Human Resource Management Foundations – HRM 500 April 28, 2013 Introduction Milton S. Hershey came from humble beginnings were he expired several disappointed business attempts, however this did not hinder his determination and gave him a more focused driver to start his business. After dropping out of school at age 14, Milton S. Hershey began apprenticing with a confection making which triggered his love of candy making and also was the beginning of the company that we have all grown to love, Hershey’s. In 1900, the first Hershey’s bar was presented to the world and is a continued favorite amongst American’s today. The Hershey’s Company became a success through the support of local townspeople and farmers, which solidified the philosophy that Milton S. Hershey believed in and a motto that the company continues today. Milton Hershey believed that workers who were treated fairly and who lived in a comfortable, pleasant environment would be better workers and at this time he was determined to build a town, not just a company (Hershey’s, 2013). As a result of his philosophy he was determined to establish an infrastructure to take care of the people who were employed by his company, from which built housing for executives and ordinary workers alike, schools, churches, parks, recreational facilities and a trolley system. ROBBINS October 21, 2011 Introduction The Hershey Company mission involves as they stated, “winning with an aligned and empowered organization…while having fun.” (Noe, 2011) Everyone wants to have fun as you can see by my title page; I am one of those people. Milton Hershey has left his legacy in the company’s core values for many years to come. The four values identified in the mission statement are instilled in their human resource management they are as follows: * We are Opening to Possibilities by embracing diversity, seeking new approaches and striving for continuous improvement. * We are Growing Together by sharing knowledge and unwrapping human potential in an environment of mutual respect. * We are Making Difference by leading with integrity and determination to have a positive impact on everything we do. * We are One Hershey, winning together while accepting individual responsibility for our results. ...Fundamentals of Human Resource Management (HRM500) Assignment #1 – Hershey’s Sweet Mission Student: Cheryl L. Simpson Professor: Dr. William Clampitt 22 January, 2012 Recommend the redesign of Hershey’s performance management system to appeal to the diverse groups that it employs. (Bohlander & Snell, 2004) High Performance Work System (HPWS) is defined as a set of management practices used to create an atmosphere within an organization where the employee has more involvement and responsibility. More precisely, HPWS has been defined by Bohlander et al (2004) as “a specific combination of HR practices, work structures, and processes that maximizes employee knowledge, skill, commitment and flexibility” (Bohlander & Snell, 2004). An approach that Hershey’s could use to appeal to the diverse groups that it employs would be to utilize knowledge workers, such as indicated by Noe et al (2011) in the case study in the form of mentoring. Noe et al (2011) defined knowledge workers as employees whose key contribution to the organization is specialized knowledge, such as knowledge of customers, a process, or a profession. Hershey has baby boomers that specialize in the knowledge of the customers and the process, and who are also enthusiastic about sharing what they know to the younger generation of workers, and subsequently fascinated by leaving a legacy. In order to address the younger generation’s eagerness for challenges, employee empowerment is also...

...Hersey’s Sweet Mission Chatty Kathy HRM500 January 26, 2013 Hersey’s Sweet Mission In this paper will be discussed options to improve Hersey’s sweet mission by redesigning their performance management system. An analysis of Hersey’s values will also be discussed. Another topic of discuss in this paper will be the trends that may impact Hersey the most. Lastly a topic that will be discussed in this paper is the effects that mentoring has on Hersey’s values. Hersey’s Performance Management System My recommendation is to redesign Hersey’s performance management system. With the help of HR, management should attempt to appeal to the company’s diverse group of employees. Offering diversity would show that Hersey wants to include all their workers in their vision of growth. Diversity in the workplace is not limited to ethic origin but many other characteristics such as gender, age, race, etc. The performance management system should focus on two different generations, the millennial and the baby boomers. The baby boomers primary responsibilities would be to train and mentor the millennial workers. Management should consider most baby boomers as the company’s role models, coaches, and mentors to be looked up to by the workforce. Empowering the baby boomers will allow the company and millennial workers to draw on the wisdom and experience which is mutually beneficial to the company and the workforce. Often times baby boomers...

...Assignment 1: Hershey’s Sweet Mission LaToiya Beidleman Dr. Bobby Barrett HRM 500 January 27, 2013 Assignment 1: Hershey’s Sweet Mission Hershey Chocolate Company is the largest chocolate supplier in North America. Since 1894 its rich history, Hershey has created various products that has provided the company the ability to meet and exceed the desires and needs of stakeholders-consumers, employees and business partners. Hershey’s mission statement has been quite simple and straight forward, “Bringing sweet moments of Hershey happiness to the world every day.”(Noe/Hollenbeck/Gerhart/Wright) This paper will discuss the redesign of Hershey’s performance management system to appeal to the diverse groups, analyze how you would interpret the values that Hershey embraces, the trends that may impact Hershey the most, and what the effects that mentoring could have on integrating values into the Hershey culture. The redesign of Hershey’s performance management system Hershey’s four identified values demonstrate that the organization has a plan of action in place in order to meet and exceed the expectations of the employees. It is imperative for any organization, but more importantly those that are large corporations to have a standard guideline of what employees should expect. Hershey’s new redesign plan is set to appeal towards the younger generation. Although this appears like a great idea, how does this assist in appealing to the more tenured crowd? I would recommend Hershey...

...There are many trends in this chapter that impact Hershey's the most, one of them is an aging workforce. The BLS has projected that from 2008 to 2018, the total U.S. civilian labor force will grow from 154 million to 167 million workers (Noel, 2011). The older generation wants to work, and many say they plan a working retirement. This economy has been troubling at times which forces the baby boomers to stay in the workforce past their retirement times. This trends impacts the baby boomer workers with the new millennial workers for companies.. The increasing use of computers to do routine task has shifted the kinds of skills needed for employees in the U.S. economy (Noel, 2011). Such qualities as physical strength and mastery of a particular piece of machinery are no longer important in many jobs (Noel, 2011). Hershey’s has setup a mentoring program for their closer to retirement workers and their newer workers we described above as millennial workers, this strategy retains company information within the newer employees so the company basically does not lose a step. The trends listed above I believe will impact Hershey's the most. As more and more of the workforce reaches retirement age, some companies have set up mentoring programs between older and younger workers so that knowledge is not lost but passed on (Noel, 2011). Mentoring could affect the Hershey’s culture in a positive way, and through mentoring it will provide a transition of senior workers knowledge and understanding...

...Mary Mitchell Slessor was born in 1848 in Scotland, she was the second of seven children. She credited much of her good character to her upbringing from her deeply religious mother. Her father ran a shoe making business that did not go well, he became an alcoholic, which resulted hardship and poverty for the family. Mary started working to help provide for her family at a very young age, her wages became the primary source of the family income, she worked up to ten hours a day to make ends meet for her family. She became a Christian at a young age. She enjoyed going to church; it was a getaway from her unhappy life at home. Her older brother who was planning to go as a missionary died, at 25 years old, she decided to go in his place. She embarked on her missionary journey to calabar in 1975 where her battle for women’s rights began, she fell sick from malaria several times and eventually passed away in 1915, nearly forty years after coming to Africa, at the age of 66. Mary Slessor has become an inspiration to all who hear her story. She was not only a pioneer missionary, but also an activist for women in general. Slessor campaigned against injustices against women. Witchcraft and superstition were prevalent in Nigeria when she arrived there because traditional society had been torn apart by the slave trade. Human sacrifice routinely followed the death of a village dignitary for instance tribal customs like killing one wife of a chief in order for her soul to accompany her husband...

...Dear Mom and Dad, I’d like to say something cute and catchy here…but instead, I’ll just get to the point of why I’m sending you this message. Danielle and I will be going on our 1st mission trip that will travel to Ecuador on November 2nd, 2013 to invest into the lives of children and families living in abject poverty. God has touched our hearts and opened our eyes to the harsh realities and living conditions that no child should ever have to endure. Yet, they do. The children that we will be caring for ‘endure’ in the most heinous and dire circumstances. On this trip, we will be partnering with two organizations that are on the front lines caring for children and families in need. The first half of our trip will be spent at Nuevos Amigos. Our church, RiverTree Christian Church, has recently assumed the operational responsibilities of Nuevos Amigos, a school located just outside of the capital city of Quito, Ecuador. It's mission is to operate a school that seeks to walk hand in hand with families to ensure that children receive spiritual guidance, quality education, and loving care that complement a healthy home environment. The other half of our time will be spent serving one of the churches and child development projects that our church helped start through Stadia Church Planting and Compassion International. This church is located on Pampanal Island, located off the northern most coastline of Ecuador. There are roughly 250 chlidren on the...
