...Why Go Green in the Hospitality Field Shelby Little RES/351 October 12, 2015 John Gilpin Why Go Green in the Hospitality Field I was recently put in charge of guaranteeing that the hotel I work for is classified as a green hotel. Several changes were put in place that helped to bring this into play. This paper is designed to explain what “Going Green” is and why it is so important. Environmentalism has become a great concern to businesses; this is being influenced by the recent jump in energy prices. Several different environmental and scientific agencies have supplied data to prove this point. The Hotel industry is no different. It has been shown that the industry would benefit immensely from the recent campaign for all businesses to "Go Green." Unfortunately, management in the Hospitality has resisted the changes. However, recently the Hospitality industry is catching up to other industries and is converting their operations to greener strategies. Hotels demand meticulous standards and are trying to keep up with guests’ concerns and demand on a cleanliness level. Because of these standards, cleaning and waste products, and how they are disposed of have become a main issue. Energy efficiency in the hotel industry can tend to be difficult due to safety concerns that the management must be attentive to. These issues include being able to keep the common areas and lobbies well-lit at all times. In various states, it may also include cooling and heating issues. The...

It is out initiative to comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, actively improve out environmental performance and reduce our impact and create environmental education and awareness for our staff and customers. The reason the Luxor hotel Melbourne is actively going “green” is for a number of reasons, the first being a competitive advantage with over half of potential customers stating they are more inclined to use a environmentally friendly hotel as apposed to one that is not (Kirk 1995). Another advantage of going green is employee retention, as employees are more likely to be enthusiastic and motivated when they share the same values as the company (Graci 2009). The most prominent but by no means the main reason for going green is the cost saving associated with going green (Brebbia 2004). The main reason the Luxor is committed to implementing environmental management systems is because as Hervé Houdré, general manager of the Willard intercontinental states “ it is not and opportunity but a responsibility” (Green convergence pp. 10). Herve has created an extensive...

...Educating hotel guests and tourists | BUAD 390 | | | | Table of Contents Introduction 2 Findings 2 Situation 2 Problem 4 Solution 6 Evaluation 6 Conclusion 7 Recommendations 8 References 9 Introduction This report will look at exactly why it is so important to educate hotel guests and tourists about environmental sustainability. Tourism is one of the top service industries in the world, there is millions of dollars being used to fund these beautiful destinations; equally as much money should be invested to keep the environment sustainable. It’s good ethical practice; the humanistic argument is without a clean environment, human health will be harmed. Without stock of renewable resources for future generations, the lives of those will be poorer quality than ours. (Grace, Cohen, & Holmes, 2014)William Blackstone has quoted saying “everyone has the right to a livable environment, then others have an obligation to allow free enjoyment of this right.” (Grace, Cohen, & Holmes, 2014). The three main groups of guests hotel chains face concerning this matter are: the ones that care about the planet and society, the ones that ask what is in it for me, and the ones who couldn’t be bothered. It is up to hotels which type of guests they wish to cater to, keeping in mind that they risk damaging their relationship with the other types. If they are too extreme on either end of the scale, not environmentally cautious or pushing too many green policies...

...Introduction The emergence of the green movement into the hospitality industry has become significant, and implementing environmentally friendly practices into an organization has become a strategy for future success. Organizations have begun to execute a green management style in order to assist in the decreasing of the environmental impact by the hospitality industry, as well as to promote an eco-friendly establishment to their expanding eco-friendly guests. According to Lee, Hsu, Han, and Kim (2010) green hotels are properties whose managers are determined to apply green practices that save water, save energy, and reduce solid waste, while also helping cut costs, and educating guests on ways to help conserve the earth’s resources. Since the introduction of green management into hospitality practices began in the 1990s, there have been dozens of studies dedicated to green management and its influence on corporate social responsibility, green hotels, green consumerism, and socially conscious consumers, (Lee et al., 2010). However, research focused directly on the perception of green hotels from the viewpoints of hotel guests, and how it influences the guest’s image of the hotel and customer loyalty. Thus, Lee, Hsu, Han and Kim (2010) focused on researching the development of a green hotel image, the influence on behavioral intentions, and strategies to develop a strong corporate image for a green hotel. Situational Analysis ‘Going Green’ has evolved past the voluntary stages...

...Hospitality companies have an ethical responsibility to go green even at the expense of the bottom line Nowadays it has become fashionable for businesses and organizations to adopt and promote environmentally friendly approach. This adaptation not only helps making these organizations noticeable but also is considered to be cost effective. The expectations and pressures of going green have also affected the hospitality industry as customers are rapidly becoming aware of the environmental concerns that the world is facing and expect the organization that they are associated with to adopt such operational and service management scenarios which are environment friendly. It is not easy to present an argument against healthier work space and environment. This essay will analyze different aspects of adopting ‘green activities’ by the hospitality organizations and will discuss if it is possible for them to maintain healthy revenues while adopting green activities. The word green generally refers towards the activities which are considered to be environmentally responsible by the consumers and stake holders, adopted by the organization in question. Such activities are meant to reduce the environmental foot print of the organization by reducing their use of natural resources and a balanced contribution towards the eco systems (Graci & Dodds, 2009).There are variety of ways to choose from when a company decides to ‘go green’ starting from minor activities to bigger more significant...

Also, there are four types of classes of hotels that Marriott has, mainly: Luxury, Upscale, Midscale and Economy classes. Luxury class hotels provide high level of service, 5 star quality food and posh surroundings. This segment provides high level of satisfaction to guests but at premium prices (Clark, 2011). Similarly, Upscale classes hotels provide excellent service, including concierge services and fine dining, but the standards are not as high as the luxury market (Clark, 2011). And of course the midscale class hotels are hotels that provide limited food service and helpful staff as well as clean and comfortable surroundings (Clark, 2011). And lastly, we have the economy segment, which caters to guests that are motivated by the price and care less for the quality and services provided (Clark, 2011). ...grown to become Canada’s leading hotel management company with more than 40 city-centre, airport and resort properties (About Delta Hotels, 2015). One of the reasons that Delta Hotels and Resorts has been able to grow into a Canadian hotel management success story is due to their commitment towards environmental sustainability that touches on every aspect of the hotel business. Delta Greens In 2010 the hotel chain introduced Delta Greens, an initiative that promised to reduce the waste the company creates, the energy that they use, and a promise to rethink everything Delta does to create positive, long-term environmental change. As stated earlier, the program touches on every aspect of the hotel business, from building practices to guest services to how they operate and maintain their properties. The goal of this initiative was simple yet ambitious: to become the leader in environmental sustainability within the Canadian hospitality industry. Each of the 40 different Delta Hotels and Resorts locations take an active role in improving its local community through volunteering and fundraising. Such examples include tree planting, road and park clean ups, donating clothes/materials, and participating in events to raise awareness of various environmental initiatives. I will go further in depth with regards to these examples throughout the report. ...Environmental Design, a certification program that was put in place by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBG). The USGBG, a nonprofit organization founded in 1993, created LEED to encourage commercial builders to incorporate more green practices and to get more people talking about energy efficiency, recycled components, and healthy buildings that feature natural lighting and materials low in toxins. (Carlson) LEED certification process has a total of 110 points in seven categories, including energy and atmosphere, sustainable sites (minimizing impacts on ecosystems), indoor environmental quality, materials and resources, water efficiency, innovation in design and bonus credits. Buildings can earn basic certification or a silver, gold, or platinum designation depending on how many of the possible credits they rack up. Hotels also save a lot of money in energy savings by becoming LEED certified. The 147 room Proximity Hotel in Greensboro, North Carolina was the first LEED certified platinum building in the hospitality industry, (Fleming, 2009). The hotel used everything from recycled table tops, to 100 solar panels on the roof. The solar panels generated 60% of the hotels hot water, and the owner, Dennis Quaintance, is able to sell $20,000 of energy to the local energy company every year. Quaintance has another hotel a mile a way, and he now saves $140,000 a year in energy savings at the Proximity hotel compared to the one down the street. The state and federal tax credits paid...

...1.Each hotel should form an Environmental Committee that is responsible for developing an Environmental Green Plan for energy, water, and solid waste use. We will have a committee meeting every month to discuss what to do better about becoming more environmental friendly. Managers come up with ideas and develop new projects of becoming greener. Our goal is to be a green friendly hotel that cares about our nature and to be able to reach these goals we have these meetings once a month. One of our developed projects is the green meeting program that minimizes harm to the environment during meetings and events, provides guidance and assistance in executive green meetings and meets the needs of the customer requesting a green meeting event. Basically, a green meeting supports a green initiative and is expected to save money while improving the environment. The greening of a meeting can be accomplished in many ways; including not pre-filling water glasses at banquet tables, collecting name tags and badge holders for reuse, providing recycling areas inside exhibition areas, and using compostable cups instead of water bottles. The bottom line is that we want to make people aware of becoming more environmentally friendly. 2. Manage your hotel’s environmental performance by monitoring the electric, gas, water, and waste usage information on a monthly and annual basis. Our engineering department will make sure our hotels environmental performance will be monitored on a monthly basis...

...Business Strategies The Good Hotel The Good Hotel When reading over the Good Hotel case study the first thing that stood out was the process that was used to communicate the leadership change and company change. The first thing that was stated in this case study was the means in which JDV went about communicating by emails, that they have sold all three properties that Pam was managing. I just believe as a company handling a transition on a scale like this they would have found a better way to communicate this huge transition. With news like this coming down I felt as if they really didn’t give Pam much to work with to deal with the staff and the concerns and emotions that come with any type of corporate structure change. With a change like this Pam is going to have to deal with her staff, keeping them focus at the task at hand. My question would be, what is the strategy of assuring the staff that cuts will be at a minimum? How do you get the word out to the customers that their experience won’t go lacking during this transition? If Pam is unable to keep her staff focus this transition could be a disaster and I believe that JVD had to have a better plan then communicating this change by an email. This just bring me back to mind to my organizational change class, and brings out how critical it is not just to come up with a good idea but take the time to figure out how you will communicate the change so that you can have a smooth transition . They ask Pam to evaluate...
