...and rather putting her in a nursing home, and furthermore, not knowing her exact age. This however, only comes out later, when he is being prosecuted for murdering the Arab man, when it turns out, that instead of being the observer, Mersault is now the one being observed. He changed after his time in prison by losing his sense of empowerment and being unable to live in the moment and not thing about his future, this lets him realize that he is no longer the observer but rather the one being observed and judged by society. Throughout the whole book Mersault has always been portrayed as the observer of society. The man, who silently sits on his balcony, having a smoke, and watches the pedestrians walk through their life. But after being imprisoned, Mersault doesn’t feel his sense of empowerment anymore due to being in prison and forgetting how society acts. Normally a man in prison sooner or later forgets how society behaves (at least the little things). But Mersault doesn’t only forget this, but also loses his sense of empowerment, his little god-complex, sitting on the balcony, watching the people walk by. He no longer observes people, and instead is not invisible on the balcony anymore, but is being watched in a little cell. He...

...“dismal” because they are no longer functioning properly as the connective tissue (521). He believes that “when you degrade the public realm, you will automatically degrade the quality of your civic life” (523). In his essay, Kunstler also provides a second part of his two- part definition of the public realm: “the public realm is the physical manifestation of the common good” to show the necessary relationship between the surroundings and the behavior of society (521, 523). In an attempt to explain these definitions of the public realm in Kunstler’s essay, this essay will examine the relationship between “chronological connectivity,” the “common good” and “citizenship” to show the deterioration of “civic life” because “consumers” are not playing their roles as responsible “citizens” and no longer care for their communities (523, 524). The link between "connective tissue" and "chronological connectivity" are meant to support the idea that our lives were affected by others decision, and we will affect our own futures. the futures that we create will affect the future for generations to come. Kunstler's essay takes place in Saratoga Springs, New York from about 1911 to the 1990's, at and around, the Grand Union Hotel (524). This hotel was once the largest hotel which allowed people to experience the best part of the city and was thought of as the centerpiece of the town where all members of the community could meet up (524). As Kunstler expresses "where I live, Saratoga Springs, New...

...that we live in today families are no longer united, they no longer communicate and they no longer act as a family. Parents are no longer involved in their children’s life, leading to miscommunication and leading parents and their children to no longer have that bond or that communication that makes parents and children’s relationship strong (Page, Thomas, 2011). Today’s society revolves all around technology, appearances, sex, and material things especially in the lives of teenagers and young people. Teenagers no longer communicate with their parents; they would rather spend time on their computer, on their cellphones, playing video games, being on social networks, etc. The majority of young people especially teenagers not only in the United States but all over the world are spending their time in things that don’t really benefit them what so ever instead of putting their time into things that benefits them and will help in their future like school, sports, spending more time with their families and most importantly giving god some of their time, and having a spiritual life. Teenagers and young people are no longer having that spiritual connection because their parents are no longer making them be involved in church or making them be involved with god and spirituality. In a recent study made by Barbara Wintersgill involving a variety of different teenagers, the male teenagers argued that “it is not cool to appear to be spiritual”, unfortunately in the society that we live in today...

...Use of haiku and mind map to reflect on the lifespan development Name: Institution: Introduction This learning journal is going to look at the chronological approach of the lifespan development and the model of hierarchical complexity theory of human development (Michele & Hoffnung, 2013). Topic one: biological foundation and genetics. In this subject, I am going to use the photo as the method of discussion. The choice of photo is because there are several photos I have come across several pictures about the biological foundation and genetics. For instance, the picture below shows the relationship between genetic variation in the biology, the environment and the behavior of an individual. The above talking point gave me the desire to find more about the genes because I realized that I know microscopic about the hereditary genetics. I had petite knowledge about the dominant and the recessive genes in which I did not know the parts they played in a human body. The knowledge that I have about genetics is that it is not always guaranteed for the traits of the parents always pass to the children. For instance, leadership is a character that some parents do have but they happen to have some of the rudest children. Moreover, there is no any relationship between genes and a person’s lifespan. Death is a natural happening that comes an unannounced. The only that that I knew genes do influence are the body complexions like the skin color, height, weight gain and eye color...

...world where no one has disabilities, diseases or any other problem like that and Imagine that humans could live to 150 or above. Well as it turns out this just maybe be possible. “Recently Scientist have started using a new form of surgery that involves using enzymes to get rid of diseases and disabilities by cutting them out” (Griffin, A , 2017). This is known as Genetic Therapy or Gene Engineering and with it we could change the world for the better. So now I’ll tell you just some of great opportunities coming out with this. But before that my claim: Genetic Engineering should be used to enhance humans. Gene Editing should be used, b/c if it was we could possible make it so that people who can’t have children can, also it could get rid of inherent disease. “Scientist in Oregon have begun using CRISPR to start fixing human genes in...

...There is a time limit on life with cancer\ In Paul Kalanithi’s article, “How Long Have I Got Left?, Paul describes his life battling with lung cancer and not being able to ever know how long he has left to live. He had masses of tumors lining the lungs and creating a deformation of the spine. During the process of treatments and doctor appointments he would tell himself to be honest about the prognosis but always leave room for some hope. He was constantly asking doctors how much longer he was going to have left to live; was it a matter of days to weeks or weeks to a few months or months to a few years? As a doctor himself, Kalanithi understands that the most effective and accurate way to describe a patient’s prognosis is to be honest about it. He believes that the life of a cancer patient is highly unpredictable, so providing them with numbers and statistics can be very misleading. I think the thesis of this article is as he stated, “The certainty of death was easier than this uncertain life”(Kalanithi 3) . This article is written with various examples of cancer patients who are battling cancer and really do not know how much longer they have to survive. He used himself as an example to support his argument and stated that if he knew how much time he had left he would accomplish so many things in life. If he had a couple months left he would spend time with his family, if he had one more year left he would write his book, if he had 10 year’s he would go back to being a doctor...

...expectancy at birth of women is longer than that if men. Historically it has been assumed that this was generally due to biological reasons. But on the basis of my graveyard data which consisted of 50 cases of people from High Point North Carolina, tables and graphs, the relationship between race, gender, and average age of death are summarized with four empirical generalizations that I got from the data. I will only present three to adequately summarize the data because only three have similar commonalities to express why women live longer than men. The first empirical generalization was on the basis of the gender table. The data showed that males have a 36 percent average age of death and females have a 64 percent average age of death and therefore males have 28 percentage points lower average age of death than females. The second empirical generalization was on the basis of the race and gender graph. In this graph females had a higher median age of death than any other category. The last empirical generalization expresses a graph that shows the data of race and sex. The data showed that white females have a significantly higher median age of death than men and black females, as well as black females had a higher average than men. The paradigms I choose to support my empirical generalizations are conflict theory on the macro level which suggests in this case that inequalities of stress and social security are factors for why women live longer than men. Exchange behaviorism on...

...Comparative Essay: Country or City Living Try to picture in your mind the perfect place to live. Did you visualize living in a fast paced or laid back place? How about a place where you know and have a relationship with your neighbors? How about having the basic conveniences and amenities close by? By thinking on these questions you have categorized your choices into two categories: country or city living. Which would you choose? Many believe that city living has more benefits than country living, however, there are some that believe that country living is a real life dream. In order to make a firm decision, a comparison between the two types of living should be conducted as living in either location has both advantages and disadvantages. Some of the similar factors to consider for living in the country or living in the city are the routine, the people’s characteristics, and the life conditions. On the other hand, some of the differences to consider in living in the country compared to living in the city are the cost of living, the relationship with neighbors the basic conveniences and luxury amenities. Living in the country and living in the city share some similarities such as a routine, the people’s characteristics, and life conditions. In living in either place, a routine is developed that usually revolves around the work life. For persons in the city, they normally wake up very early at the same time every morning for work and return home in the later afternoon...

... but research suggests many ways to age successfully. What does that mean to age successfully? According to researcher Quadagno (2014), “ successful aging depends not just on the prevention of disease and disability, but also on the attainment of peak physical and psychological functioning and participation in rewarding social and productive activities. Instead of taking a negative approach to the problems of aging, social gerontologists are now investigating the factors that create a healthy, fulfilling life in old age” (p.4). If we want to grow old gracefully, we need to have personal objectives to accomplish. How well we achieve our personal objectives is a measure of our success. During our lifetimes if we make positive choices in the areas of our own biological, psychological, environmental and social health, we may increase the number of years we live beyond the average (Quadagno, 2014, p.4) Forms of Ageism and Negative Stereotyping of the Elderly In 1968 Robert Butler, Chairman for a Congressional Committee on Aging, suggested that ageism was “a systematic stereotyping of and discrimination against people simply because they are old…” (Martin, 2014, p.150). So noted by M.E. Martin, in...

As one of the millions of Jew-ish survivors of the Holocaust, Wiesel shares his personal story from his point of view bringing the themes of faith and desperation to surface. The desperation to survive changes Wiesel’s be-lief in God from one of unquestioning faith to a cynical more callous view. As the book unfolds these two themes present themselves and are tied to the storyline and Wiesel’s disposition and mental state. Throughout the book, Wiesel often talks about his faith and how...

...People have always dreamed of living longer People have always wanted to live longer or to live forever or to be immortal. But there is a slight difference between immortality and living forever. Theoretically speaking there are some chances for people to live longer or even forever (scientists have already isolated the gene that carries information for growing older) but people will never be able to be immortal because our body is vulnerable although in some way our spirit is immortal. Well, it is questionable why have people always dreamed of living forever. As we all know there are some beneficial facts concerning infinite life but on the other hand there are even more nuisances. Even if scientists would pass the problem of oldering our body would naturally be getting weaker. Nevertheless people know how repulsive oldness can be but they still want to live longer. I assume it is because of the fear from death that people feel. However our life is our biggest preciousness. I nevertheless think it would be quite appalling to live forever. In my opinion death is a part of life that has to be lived. Because I’m shore there is something beyond death. Others, however, who don’t agree with my philosophy should share my other opinion that death is a kind of retirement. And isn’t retirement one of the basic reasons for eternal living? By and large, many people don’t agree with my thinking. It is logical that people who are happy aren’t pleased to leave their happiness. To sum...

Comparing to the real world, we do age, we do have emotions, and we do care about others. In Brave New World everyone lives forever because of the medications they take. The question for today is, how long are we going to live in the future? It all depends on medical advances, and technological advances. Some people believe we are going to live longer as the years go on. Some believe that medicines or life styles may decrease our life expectancy. I believe that in the very far future we may end up like Brave New World, taking medications or other modifications to help our bodies live longer. I believe that we will advance medically in the near future, but we will not be advancing rapidly enough to be able to find a medication that everyone in society is going to take. It is far-fetched...

...Making Us Stupid by Nicholas Carr, published in The Atlantic online magazine, talks about the ways google and other forms of technology have hurt the way people think. It tells of historical events, current worldwide companies, and the authors own views to show those negative aspects of technology. Technology has been sold to the world as a tool that is brilliant and amazing, and something that can helps so many people. While that may be true, it doesn’t tell the whole story on what technology can do to a person. Reliance on new technology, such as computers and the internet, have been, and are, adversely affecting the way people think, write, and read which ultimately influences how humans are living. As technology is advancing and changing, so is the way that people are reading. People are no longer going to libraries, but instead using the internet to “read”. Nicholas Carr says...

...Anxiety Torrie Jauregui Com/172 August 20th, 2014 Brendan Praniewicz Anxiety Anxiety is a disorder where people live in fear. The people who suffer with this disorder worry all the time about if something will go wrong. This disorder destroys how people suffering with it live on a daily basis. People suffering with this disorder fear from being judged by others. They fear going out and being a part of society, they fear that they will have a massive panic attack out of know where. This disorder creates social anxiety, affects personal life, and creates panic attacks in the person suffering. Social anxiety is the extreme fear of being scrutinized and judged by others in social or performance situations “Anxiety and depression association of America, 2014.” People dealing with social anxiety have a hard time being in situations that make them have to deal with or be around other people. Here is an example about social anxiety effecting a man named Greg. One day Greg got talked into going to a party with his roommate. However, Greg’s roommate suddenly had to work that day and could no longer attend. Greg now was going alone and had not been able to come up with a good reason to no longer go. When he arrived his anxiety was starting to hit him; he was sweating vigorously. Once he entered the party, he no longer wanted to be there. His new objective for the night was to hide in plain sight and get out as soon as he could (Jantz, 2014). The fear of letting down his roommate...

...Gary Brewer Dr. Manar Kolta Biology 1010 16 November 2015 Naked Mole Rat Naked mole rats are very interesting indeed. They are a result of living underground for long periods of time and they don’t really show the aging process like most other mammals. The live-span of a naked mole rat is crazy long to other mammals up to 30 years [1]. Naked mole rats have a unique way that makes it impossible for cancer to be present in their bodies. The naked mole rat has extremely high super sugar called high-molecular-mass Hyaluronan and mutations in the gene that comes up with it. I chose the naked mole rat because I want the cure to cancer to be found soon. I watched my grandpa suffer from cancer and I don’t think anybody should have to go through it. No one has ever found cancer in naked mole rats; they appear to be resistant to the disease. Single amino acid changes in naked mole rat may reveal new anti-cancer mechanisms in mammals. The naked mole rat lives underground and can live up to 30 years old. They haven’t found any cancer cells in the rodents. This biochemical and physiological characteristics lead to a popular model for cancer research. In this research article there was research done on the rodents in the naked mole rats 66 NMR were detected in them that weren’t detected in 11 other animals. A total of 89 genes were present in the 11 animals that weren’t in the Rodent. [2] Out of these 89 genes 3 are known to be related to cancer. The 11 animals had proteins that were...
