...Vol. 3 The Effects of Different Types of Music on Cognitive Abilities Laurel Harmon, Kristen Troester Taryn Pickwick, Giovanna Pelosi Western Connecticut State University A variety of research has been conducted on the effects of different types of music on cognitive abilities. Many of these studies are based upon the Mozart Effect, which claims that listening to classical music has an advantage over other types of music on learning. This study consists of two experiments which tested 54 college students ages 18-50. In Experiment 1, we hypothesized that participants exposed to Mozart would score significantly higher on a listening comprehension test than those exposed to rock music or silence. In Experiment 2, we hypothesized that listening to rock music would result in lower reading comprehension test scores than classical music or non-music groups. An ANOVA test indicated that the results for both experiments were non-significant. The relationship between music and learning has been an area of interest for researchers for many years. Some studies have shown that music can enhance cognitive abilities (Hall, 1952), and others have shown that it can interfere with complex cognitive processes but not simple processes (Fogelson, 1973). In 2004, researchers conducted a study that presented the effect of Mozart’s music on learning. The effect demonstrated that there may be an important relationship between certain types of music (e.g. classical) and learning (Jackson & Tluaka...

Source: National Automobile Museum, Gallery 1, name of car 1902 Oldsmobile “R” Runabout Background Information about the artifact (history): Ransom Eli Olds was the owner of the Olds Motor Works in Lansing, Michigan, founded in 1896. This factory burned to the ground in March, 1901. The only car to survive was a curved dash model, which was pushed out by workers. Mr. Olds built a new factory and for the first few years, all models were based on the one car saved. In 1901, 425 cars were made, in 1902, 2500 cars were put out. The earliest advertising for an automobile was created in 1898, but it was not until 1902 that there was significant use of advertising in magazines and automobiles. The first advertisement for an Olds was in the 1902 Saturday Evening Post. Automobile production increased: 1903 – 4,000 automobiles, 1904 – 5500 autos and in 1905 – 6500 autos were produced. Mr. Olds commissioned 2 songwriters: Vincent Bryan and Gus Edwards to write a song specifically for advertising purposes. This song was “In my Merry Oldsmobile”, written in 1905. How will my students use the artifact to connect to history? Students will use the car and the song to examine and list characteristics...

...Companies approach event managers with a vague idea and a budget in mind. It is then entirely up to the event manager to develop and improvise and turn the idea into a success. Once the idea and the budget are settled, event managers begin coordinating with sponsors and performers, arranging travel, security, and accommodation for the stars if there is a show. They also have to supervise ticket and stage design, arrange music, sound and lights, and look into those numerous details that go into making an event successful. Security is another big issue that is dealt with by event managers. In India [ Images ], shows usually have to end before midnight at the latest, even earlier in some places. Event managers have to ensure that events conclude on time, and in case they stretch beyond the permitted hours, they have to handle the police and the local bureaucracy. Bad security could ruin an otherwise well-organised event. Unwanted guests, stampedes, fights, and harassment of performers are a few things event managers have to tackle during public events. Segments like music, culture, sports, fashion shows, Bollywood-based shows and award ceremonies are emerging as the main growth drivers in the sector. "Sports management is not very well known in India. Cricket being the dominant sport, event management usually centers around it," says Rehan Shaik, group consultant in Advent, a Lintas event management company. He says event management in sports is usually long term and something, which...

...Composition I 9 September 2010 How I Became The Reader & Writer I Am Today Reading and writing never came natural to me. It’s like a skill you’re supposed to obtain as human beings, but I’ve must have been sick that day of school. I have great difficulty in understanding what I read, annotating what I just read, analyzing the reading, reading between the lines of what the author is trying to say, and organizing my thoughts and ideas on a piece of paper. It doesn’t help much that both reading and writing never was interesting to me. I found myself struggling throughout the years I’ve been in school to pass an English or composition class. I did, however, find one subject that I could connect with those subjects that helped me understand and progress as a reader and a writer ¾ Music class. As a kid in elementary school, we had basic music classes, and my first memory in a music class was learning to play the recorder. Our teacher taught the class how to hold, and position each finger over the holes of the recorder to make different sounds. At this age, is was hard to harmonize, considering it was our first year learning an instrument. There was no reading or writing when it came to playing the instruments, but with music, a story can be made. For example, half the class would play our recorders in sync with one another, and other students in the class would play percussion. With the rhythm of the music combined, the feel and sound of the music gives the audience a feel of a...

...Music, know one really knows how it affects us in life. It affected me since the first time I ever touched a key on a piano, moved a slide on a trombone, strummed a string on a guitar and heard the sound of a drum after a quick hit. Last year in October The University of Memphis held a march with the mighty sound of the south and invited high schoolers to go play and march with them on the field. The morning I had to wake up super early which was kinda different from my normal Saturdays of sleeping in till around noon unless it’s competition season which ended early last year. As we arrived people were already there and getting set up and talking. Then the band director came out and greeted everyone as we stood in a weird circle around him....

...Jonathan Escalier Introduction to Mass Communication Reaction paper 1 A) How do we in contemporary society make use of mass media: transmission of culture selective exposure, source of information, entertainment, etc.? Contemporary society makes use of Mass Media in many ways. One example is the exposure of favored information through beliefs, attitudes, and decisions. Twitter a social networking site has brought many towards opinions of from many races on todays world event and celebrities. Twitter starts with a tweet and is then re-tweeted to several people to expose the trend. It also allows for a communication with celebrities and who is following whom in order to be a part of his or her’s opinions and be up to date with their daily activities. Another way that the contemporary society uses Mass Media is through commercials. Commercials are a great way of being able to influence what he or she is thinking and lead to a decision based on the commercial. For example, In sport games there will be a big amount of pizza commercials that allow the person if he has a group of friends over his house to order a pizza in hope that he does not miss a minute of the game. Lastly a good commercial on microwable foods will feature an emphasis on quality and how fast it is prepared. Stouffers lasagna is a popular dinner that feeds a family of 3-4. Companies like Red bull pay people to drink their energy drink in hopes to get an opinion of a new taste that they are testing such as Coca...

...This essay is written about Chapter Seven, “Concentration: The Spirit of the Zone” and Chapter 4, “FUN: The JOY IN MUSIC”, to provide a reader with the opinion of the chapters and the topics discussed in both. Chapter seven explained the state of “the zone”, in which musicians can play music with grace, precision and passion beyond normalcy. In order to achieve this state, a relaxed and focused brain is the key to peak performance, as stated in the chapter itself. Written with meaning and passion, the text describes the steps and state of mind necessary to enter “the zone” while playing music. If a musician does not play and blend with their music with passion, they have not yet entered “the zone”. As the author states, a musician devoting themselves to the music they play, the musician’s muscle memory and keen senses, including touch and feeling develop, especially when they...
