...Human Resource Management (HRM) practices However, the greatest impact on both service quality and productivity in hotels is likely to derive from efficient and effective HRM practices. Recruitment is presently negligible in Indonesian and Malaysian hotels, but has become a crucial issue in Singapore (eg. Debrah, 1993) and Australia, in terms of both quantity and quality. Desperate situations require innovative solutions. The Singapore Grand has a comprehensive recruitment strategy, including the attraction of older employees, incentive employee referral programmes, hotel trainees from SHATEC, guest workers, and a mix of full-time, part-time, casual and “internal casual” employees. Australian hotels are in a similar situation. At least part of the solution to the staffing dilemma - ie., quantity but variable quality - may be in closer hotel management involvement in the curricula and accreditation of hotel training schools and associations. Criteria for employee quality in all hotels needs attention as well, and this has been established in most hotels studied, through job analyses, revised job descriptions and distilled selection criteria. The Jakarta International and the Penang Resort, in particular, have designed comprehensive job analysis and selection interview systems. Most hotels suggest that skills requirements are less crucial in choosing service employees than their attitudes, behaviour or values. Cultural advantages appear to exist here in Indonesia and Malaysia...

...Labor Laws and Unions HRM/531 07/26/2012 L. Robinson Labor Laws and Unions In this paper I will briefly give background information on Union Pacific Railroad. Identify any legal issues and obstacles that Union Pacific may have or encounter. Discuss if any federal, state, or local laws were broken because of the legal issues and why. I will also provide recommendations to minimize any litigation. The Pacific Railroad Act of 1862 was approved by President Abraham Lincoln, it also provided the construction of railroads. Union Pacific Railroad is a transportation company chartered by Congress to build the nation’s first transcontinental railroad line. Because of the Pacific Railroad Act, Union Pacific was approved to build a line west from Omaha, Nebraska to California-Nevada line, there it was to join with the Central Pacific RR, which was being built at the same time from Sacramento, California. Each company after completion of the railroad was to be granted 6,400 acres of public lands. The Union Pacific Railroad has their headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. Union Pacific Railroad is the leading railroad system in the United States. The Company has employees of more than 45,000, and operates at least 9,000 locomotives on 32,000 miles of track across 23 states in central and western United States. Union Pacific has purchased a large amount of railroads. Union Pacific’s main competitor is BNSF Railway. Union Pacific is one of the most powerful railroads in the country. It...

...Human Resource Management and the Workplace Cassandra M. Rhymes BUS303: Human Resources Management Professor Beverly Williams April 26, 2010 Human Resource Management and the Workplace Human Resource Management requires a careful balance and coordination between corporate policies, local, state and federal regulations, and employee rights within the workplace. This paper will review a few of the principles examined during this course and applied to current work environments. Specifically, this paper will review the effect human resource management has on planning within a company through hiring, planning, and recruitment through the use of compensation and other benefits that are important to employee satisfaction. Discussions within our classroom environment included EEO and affirmative action, human resource development, safety and health, and employee and labor relations. While these are not the only components of human resource management, these are the items we addressed in class. Within my own company, our human resource department is divided among the divisions, with the main corporate office housing the human resource group for the entire company, and a small human resources group in the St. Louis office for the division I currently work for. For purposes of this paper, I will use the St. Louis information, as it is the group I am most familiar with. Additionally, I will address the corporate policies for the United States groups, as those apply to our...

.... Outline and discuss the key HRM issues in the case study that are at the heart of the decline of the company (there are at least five). There are many significant HRM issues evident at Clayton’s Brewed Drinks and they all stem from the top with the functionality of senior management, cascading down the organisation affecting many areas. Managers fulfil many different roles every day and are constantly switching roles as tasks, situations, and expectations change (Mintzberg, 1989). These roles can be can be categorised, as presented by Mintzberg in Table 1, into interpersonal, informational and decisional. Category Roles Interpersonal Figurehead Leader Liaison Informational Monitor Disseminator Spokesperson Decisional Entrepreneur Disturbance Handler Resource Allocator Negotiator Table 1. Mintzberg, H. (1989). Mintzsberg on Management. New York: The Free Press. At present, it appears that senior management are focusing on the roles within the interpersonal category, albeit ineffectively. They spend much of their time promoting the idea that their people are the organisation’s most valuable resource when the perception held by the employees beneath them is in contradiction to this. Senior management’s superficial presentation of their leadership only inflames the degeneration of the culture and morale within the organisation where trust and loyalty is quickly evaporating. Rather than function with more focus on the decisional category where information is sourced...

...December 1, 2012 HRM 594-60124 Negotiation Skills Keller Graduate School of Management Cast Study 1: Capital Mortgage Insurance Corporation In any good negotiation, it is important that the Capital Mortgage Insurance Corporation (CMIC) and Corporate Transfer Services (CTS) understand the issue and must come into the negotiation with a clear idea of what the conflict is and what they would like to gain from it. Both companies should present their side of the case. The dilemma is the president of Capital Mortgage Insurance Corporation, Frank Randall and his senior vice president and treasurer Jim Dolan are planning a strategy in order to compete and successfully receive the acquisition of Corporate Transfer Services. In order for Capital Mortgage Insurance Corp to accomplish this, they must understand the interest and position of Corporate Transfer Services. Once this is accomplished, Randall and Dolan must come into the negotiation with a clear idea of what the conflict is and what they would like to gain from the negotiation. If the Corporate Transfer Services is unwilling to agree or reach an impasse, then CMIC should ask questions such as, what are you concerns and ultimately, what would you like to see happen with this transition? CMIC must be willing to actively listen to the concerns of CTS and be willing to explore other solutions in order to fulfill the agreement. The bulk of the negotiation process is a continuous back and forth of ideas, options, and even arguments...

...mid October, 2009, between the managers of the Multinational Corporation (MNC) Kraft Foods (KFT) subsidiary in Argentina -Kraft Foods Argentina (KFTA)- and the Workers Internal Commission (WIC) of the firm s most important industrial plant in the country. The Argentinean Ministry of Labor (MLAB) convened the MC negotiation to settle an organizational conflict, regarding of opposing views about what preventive measures were adequate to cope the risks posed over the workers health by the 2009 global epidemic outbreak of swine influenza A(H1N1), that escalated out of the parties control. The contribution of our case study, on such specific type of labormanagement negotiation, is that it allows to gain a better understanding on how negotiators, confront the complexity of contextual circumstances and manage the process and, in addition, that it explores through the theoretical lens of the Turning Points (TP) framework -precipitants, departures and consequences- how they retrospectively judge that those essential elements interplayed along it. We consider that the KFTA case corroborates the aptitude of the TP framework for such kind of examination and that it allows to extract practical implications on how labor-management negotiations, although different from the international, can be managed in ways that may lead...

...Performance Appraisal Problems at DDI Group Activity Case Study Downbrody Drinks International (DDI) manufactures take away hot drinks which are sold in grocery stores, garages and supermarkets across Europe through their specialised dispensing machines. They also manufacture and distribute soft drinks such as their successful “Orange Energy”, “Spring Rose” and other carbonated products. DDI was originally established as a small Irish drinks and snack foods company in 1972 serving the local and UK markets. Over the years it expanded its Irish production facility focussing more and more upon drinks products. In 2001 it became a subsidiary of the global multinational Dunder Keisler Drinks and Foods Incorporated (DKDF). DKDF produces a range of food and drinks products across the so-called “fast-moving consumer goods” spectrum of products. The DDI manufacturing site in southern Ireland is now also the DDI worldwide head quarters. At the DDI Irish site the firm employs around 1,300 staff. Of these 1,000 are factory-workers and 300 based in head office. The major DDI corporate support functions are located at head office including human resources, finance, marketing, sales, product development and logistics (shipping and distributions management). Most factory staff are members of the GWLU (General Workers Labour Union) whereas only about a third of the staff at head office are in a Labour Union. Union members at Head Office are represented by the Clerical and Office...

...Management is as diverse as one’s fingerprint and no two managers in the same situation will necessarily have the same approach, thought processes, or outcomes. There are many managers in the business world. Some examples are: finance managers who are geared toward the financial success of the company, purchasing managers, who deal with product management and there are human resource managers, who deal with policy, procedures and employee relations. Each of these managers has a specific job function in the company. Management roles vary within a company and can also vary based upon departmental functions. This paper will discuss the three basic components in managerial roles, interpersonal and individual performance, develop employees, and plan and allocate resources. These roles will help the manager to identify the stage competency of the employee and how much the employee is ready to maintain and grow in his / her career development. Interpersonal managers provide direction and supervision for the employee and the company as a whole. The interpersonal manager’s character typically includes leadership function as a figurehead, motivator and directional authority. Most of the successful interpersonal managers have acquired their skill sets through experience and engaging with employees, peers, and superiors over time. Senior management lecturers Deepa Sethi and Manisha Seth reference Peter Hartley’s definition of interpersonal skill, “Hartley (1999, p. 20) defines interpersonal...

...Case 1: Capital Mortgage Insurance Corporation By Unknown This paper is being submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for HRM-595 DeVry-Keller Graduate University School of Management Guidelines You Should Follow During a Negotiation "A negotiation is an interactive communication process that may take place whenever we want something from someone else, or another person wants something from us” (Shell, p. 6). In order to have a successful negotiation, there are some guidelines that should be followed in the negotiation of the procurement of the Corporate Transfer Services (CTS). These guidelines include, but are not limited to, setting mutual guidelines and ground rules, ensuring all involved parties are aware of the negotiation process, ensuring all involved parties agree upon a safe, neutral location, free from outside disturbances to hold the negotiation, ensuring every involved party has presented all of their issues, interests, their position (where they stand on the issues) and their intention, ensuring all involved parties provide alternative solutions to the issues at hand and ensuring that a neutral party is taking notes or meeting minutes. Some critical things to remember in any negotiation are to avoid the appearance of being uninformed or overly aggressive and to be careful not to over-negotiate. It’s very important to know when to cut off the discussion. In addition, integrative bargaining should be used, if at all possible...

...Labor Law and Unions Richard S Gist MD HRM 531 10 September 2012 Prof Phillip Norris OUTLINE 2 Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City is an 1100 bed tertiary teaching medical center with a large, diverse nursing staff. Due to increasing dissatisfaction with management, the nursing staff of the organization with the blessing of the Chief Nurse Executive organized under the SEIU (Service Employees International Union) in 2005. Chapter number 1199 was then formed with the approval of the Mount Sinai Medical Center leadership. Since its inception, the Union has worked with the Medical Center to improve nursing process thereby improving patient satisfaction and also with patient safety initiatives. The larger organization of Mount Sinai may be at risk from state nursing regulations if a strike occurs due to the possibility of patient abandonment. While the applicable Joint Commission rules regarding nursing staffing apply, there is precedent from prior nursing strikes that this would have minimal impact. There is a very real risk of civil litigation if the shortage...
