...JEKYLL AND HYDE PHILADELPHIA l FORREST THEATRE REVIEW December 27th, 2012; today I went to go see the production of Jekyll and Hyde in Philadelphia. Prior to entering the theater, I’ve been extensively studying the music for about a month, so I set myself up for very high expectations. Some key things that I was looking for was a full-sounding company/chorus and a wide-ranged Jekyll/Hyde. Before I continue this review, this was a very good show, but I would recommend it for the open-minded. Act I; as I was sitting at my seat (eagerly) waiting for the show to start, I had no idea what I was in for this evening. I was expecting the show to be very Broadway-esque, but it had some very unique and unexpected twists. At the start of Act I, I was immediately impressed with the staging. The management was very effective in their use of technology and lighting. During the scene when Jekyll sees his father in the asylum, I was very disturbed but in a good way. I was expecting the cast to wheel Dr. Jekyll’s father on some sort of gurney, and Jekyll would proceed to sing his opening number, but the scene was completely transformed. Jekyll’s father was strapped vertically on a bed, struggling to break free while Jekyll and the Board of Governors were discussing his condition. Instantly you get this feeling of mental frustration/anxiety from the character which was great because that’s what the whole musical revolves around. As Jekyll began singing “Lost in the Darkness”, I wasn’t immediately...

...Looking On The Brighter Side Violent media is something some people believe causes violent impulses in humans. A lot of parents are against it and believe exposing it to children can be very harmful. They view it as the bad kid down the street that hopefully if they can keep their kid away from it, their child won’t turn out bad. This can be something very common in conservative homes. I believe people a very wrong view on violent media; such as video games, movies, comic books, and different kinds of music. More importantly, I believe it helps more people than it hurts. In an article Gerard Jones wrote, he states, “Then the Incredible Hulk smashed through it,” when describing a wall built between him and the crudest elements of American pop culture. He believes that media such as this plays an important role in helping kids express feelings they’re not used to. For example, kids are always taught to try to ignore their feelings like anger and rage, because they’re bad. Jones believes that violent media can be an outlet for kids to let those feelings on to. When you think about it, it makes sense. Humans are violent by nature. There’s a reason we’re on top of the food chain. However, when humans became civilized and created a relatively peaceful society, there was no need to be violent. Yet, some people still were. There is no denying that people have violent urges, but we’ve advanced enough to be able to control it. But sometimes when people get frustrated, it can feel like...

...Anna Hauss Jennifer Parrack-Rogers English 111-006 Description and Illustration Essay 13 September 2011 Goodbye Home Sweet Home It was a day like any other day. I woke up early to prepare for what Monday had in store for me. Class was first on the agenda and I was driving into town when my phone started ringing abruptly. Dad was calling. The moment I picked up the phone my stomach dropped and cold chills devoured my body, as he told me our house had caught fire. I sensed the chill of a shadow cast over me and everything seemed to be moving in slow motion. Instinct pricked me and I knew I needed to return home. When I arrived, my entire street was blocked with fire and rescue crews. On the surface and from a distance, my house looked fine. I started to wander towards the chaos. The closer I proceeded, the damage was more apparent. My eyes began to fill with tears as I sat down tucking my legs to my chest as tight as I could, hiding my face between my knees. I had images racing through my mind of my house being engulfed in flames, with thick, dark smoke pouring out of the windows and roof. I sat in disbelief feeling utterly alone, suddenly assaulted with the vastness of the destruction. I sat, as tears continued to slowly make their way down my somber face, and studied the entrance of my black, damaged home in absolute doubt. I could not help but feel sick to my stomach with anger and discomfort for the obvious injustice of the situation. I heard car doors shut and my...

...Yu 1 Yue Yu (Jasmine) Kat Gonso ENGW 1102 October 5, 2013 The audience of this review should be those people who like watching science fiction movie or fans of super heroes. My intended publication would be online blog, which is special prepared for sci-fi movies and TV shows, such as the blog Atomic Anxiety on website WordPress, and so on. Review of the Avengers: Numerous Figures but Distinct Characters Recently, a new TV series was released, called The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. As a loyal fan of science fiction movies and S.H.I.E.L.D, how can I miss these episodes! However, it is really a pity that there are only few episodes right now, I have to be patient to wait for the next story. And I am sure that most fans would be like me to wait for next episodes. So, in order to make waiting time more interesting, I would like to introduce a movie, which also happened in S.H.I.E.L.D, and fans would like it. It is called Avengers. Unlike normal agents using high technology to solve various troubles in TV series The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, super heroes in the movie Avengers uses their own abilities to protect their homeland. It is true that the TV series looks more like a reality, but I think superpower makes a science fiction movie more fantasy and mysterious. So, there is no doubt that when it first showed on screen, it received a warm welcome in a large amount of fans. The poster of the Avengers Yu 2 For me, the movie attract me most is that many of audiences’ familiar heroes would...

...Rage Acceptable or Not? As a young child I was taught that your rage was something that you had to control because if you lost control of it, that it could get you in a world of trouble. Yet don’t we all get this unhuman sense of rage that has to be released? In some form or has society deemed it ok as long as it is controlled. In Steven Kings article “ Why we Crave Horror Movie” he claims “We are all mentally ill.(559) Whereas in Gerard Jones article “Violent Media is Good for Us” he argues that he was taught that “Rage was something to be overcome and cooperation was always better than conflict”. (1\5) “Yet he suffocated his deepest fears and desires under a nice-boy persona.” Until he’s introduced to Marvel Comics and the Incredible Hulk. Yes, we have become a society that seeks out violence. It has become a part of our everyday life. So has the seeking out of violence become something more, something that should make us question ourselves? Is there really a self-gratification in what we see? Does it really calm the savage beast we have hidden in our mind? In the case of Steven King he points out that “It’s like lifting a trapdoor in the civilized forebrain and throwing raw meat to the alligators below (in the river) because it keeps them fed and down in the river.” (561) Yet in Jones research he use Melanie Moore, Ph.D., a psychologist that works with urban teens saying that “ Fear, greed, power-hunger, rage: these are aspects of ourselves that we try not to experience...

...A Modern Day Allusion The Elizabethan era, once filled with long dresses, courtship and theatre has now transitioned into a time when less clothing is considered better and with some teenagers, dating is a quick as a game of musical chairs, switching partners when the music stops. Teenagers are more interested in social media and texting than interacting with other people. There a two allusions that can be switched into Hamlet to allow it to appeal to a young and modern audience. Updating the term Termagant and Hercules could appeal to a more modern audience. Termagant was originally “a deity erroneously ascribed to Islam by medieval European Christians and represented in early English drama as a violent character.” This original allusion is used to describe a nasty or violent person and in Hamlet is it used in Act III Scene ii, before Hamlet performs his play. It is used in the context of “I would have such a fellow whipped for o'erdoing Termagant. It out-Herods Herod.” Hamlet was telling the actors not to overdo their performance and to not have violent outbursts. Many teenagers would not know what this word meant unless they had to look it up for a project. The word bully would be a better fit for a modern audience, because for years, teenagers and kids have been taught about the definition of a bully and what it means to bully another person. The new line would read as “I would have such a fellow whipped for o’erdoing a bully. It out-Herods Herod“ By making this replacement...

...Performance Critique The play I chose to see for this review was Marvel Universe Live. It was an action packed thrill ride of an experience and a great play. The entertainment company who created this act is Feld Entertainment they’ve had multiple other players like Disney on Ice, and the Barnum & Bailey Circus. This play includes a lot of Marvel identities that everyone is familiar with and some may not be like Black Widow, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Cyclops, Electro, The Falcon, Green Goblin, Hawkeye, The Hulk, Iron Man, Loki, Nick Fury, Red Skull, Rhino, Spider Man, Storm, Thor, & Wolverine and also many other characters in the Marvel universe .The plot of the play is about Thor shatters the cosmic cube and the pieces scatter across the world and the bad guys get a hold of these pieces and of course the good guys have to stop them. The actors in the performance you could hear them very well in the BJCC even when we sat at the tip top of the arena. The actors had great chemistry on the stage and you can tell they’ve been acting for a very long time. They villains moved like they were big and bad and the heroes moved like well no one can mess with them. The stage which they performed on was the court of the BJCC and the stage was awesome there was a lot of props. Like I said the stage was huge so there was a lot of room for character interaction and it all made sense for the performance. The set was pretty epic with the props the special effect the lighting and everything...

...1 RTVF 010 Hill1 5/8/14 Film Analysis Paper Assignment: The Avengers The Avengers is an outstanding movie with a storyline that makes it hard for the viewer to look away. It is about an evil man from another world, Loki, who comes to earth to steal an energy source of unknown potential, the tesseract, to try and take over the world. The leader of the earth’s peace keeping agency has went out and gathered The Avengers; a group of superheroes that consists of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. Together these superheroes set out to save the world in a captivating story full of thrilling events. However, what makes these thrilling events come across to the audience so effectively is the excellent use of mise en scène. Throughout this movie, several aspects of mise en scène are used very effectively and are a big part of why this was one of the most succesful movies ever made. One scene that contains an extraordinary use of mise en scène is in the forest when Iron Man and Captain America first meet Thor. The first thing that stood out was the setting. These three extremely powerful forces are meeting for the first time in this very large forest. Right off the bat the setting gives off a sense that almost anything can happen. They are in the wide open wilderness with nothing stopping them from doing what they want to do. If they want to fight, they can do so without harming any nearby people. Another aspect of mise en scène that...

...Organizational Behavior Jekyll and Hyde 1-18 I think I would probably give a higher salary than I would actually be willing to accept. I believe that everyone does this when they are going to be bargaining. I do this when I sell things online because I know that most people will try to bargain with me and instead of feeling like you are being rude and not going down on a price it makes the buyer feel like they are getting a better deal and that you are giving a little. It is probably not the moral thing to do because it is sort of like lying in a roundabout way. If I was willing to take a salary of $60,000/year I would probably start at $70,000 or $75,000. I don’t feel it would violate their transparency culture because they are asking you and they have no idea if the number you are giving them is your bottom dollar or not. 1-19 I think it would be something that I would check into and take into consideration for sure. Whenever I read something that is a bad review I feel the need to at least do a little more research. This could be an accusation that is not even true. Like with anything people can make up false accusations about a company just because they are mad because they were fired or not offered a job. 1-20 I think it would play a part in the decision of which company to use. I would rather work for a company that is open to benefiting society and to do things for the good of society. I would rather work for an ethical company than one that is not. In the...

...Cognitive Style Cognitive style is used to describe the way individuals come to a decision to accomplish the work based on their thoughts draw from their observation. On a given class of situation, an individual will choose their preferred way of gathering, processing and evaluating information (Hayes & Allinson 1998). The style is a better predictor of “job behaviour than intelligence” (Sadler-Smith & Badger 1998, p. 248), as it is not measurable in term of aptitude of handling. Learning Style Learning styles are several ways or methods that help individuals to learn and gain knowledge. Unlike personal style, it is often expressed in the way individuals select one particular mode of learning over another, e.g. I simply don't like training but I greatly prefer coaching (Sadler-Smith 1996). There are several studies on how individuals can identify their best learning style. In Kolb's (1984) experiential learning model, there are four different styles of learning identified – “accommodative, divergent, assimilative and convergent” (Mullins 2007, p. 191). “Individuals may have a preference for one of the key stages and therein lies their learning style” (Mullins 2007, p. 190). Seen this way, managers' learning styles can be assessed based on their approach to acquire and apply knowledge through practice. In a recursive learning cycle, individual can spot and strengthen their “weaker preferences” by adapting...

There are so many distractions that it can be challenging to discipline one's self to accomplish a monumental goal. By keeping the faith and courage in yourself, you can dramatically increase your chances of becoming successful in whatever you choose to pursue. This is it! Courage! Courage is what Jesse Robredo takes for him to be successful. For trials and difficulties he encountered, he tried to do his best, and he did not give up even if a failure hinders him along the way to success. He provides the most appropriate model for every one of us to impersonate; but, is it only Jesse that can do such a thing? Is it only him who can leave a legacy and make a difference to everyone’s life? Jesse Robredo lived in a very simple way. Stories abound of how Jesse was so unassuming, dressed always modestly, lived in an ordinary house, had simple taste in food, and were always comfortable. The disability of his father did not affect Jesse’s way of living, but it gives him more courage to do his best for his family. Although not given all he wanted in life, he was raised and filled with love and well care of his father. The teaching of his father became a guide of Jesse into his daily life. Even in a very simple...
