Goodbye Home Sweet Home It was a day like any other day. I woke up early to prepare for what Monday had in store for me. Class was first on the agenda and I was driving into town when my phone started ringing abruptly. Dad was calling. The moment I picked up the phone my stomach dropped and cold chills devoured my body, as he told me our house had caught fire. I sensed the chill of a shadow cast over me and everything seemed to be moving in slow motion. Instinct pricked me and I knew I needed to return home. When I arrived, my entire street was blocked with fire and rescue crews. On the surface and from a distance, my house looked fine. I started to wander towards the chaos. The closer I proceeded, the damage was more apparent. My eyes began to fill with tears as I sat down tucking my legs to my chest as tight as I could, hiding my face between my knees. I had images racing through my mind of my house being engulfed in flames, with thick, dark smoke pouring out of the windows and roof. I sat in disbelief feeling utterly alone, suddenly assaulted with the vastness of the destruction. I sat, as tears continued to slowly make their way down my somber face, and studied the entrance of my black, damaged home in absolute doubt. I could not help but feel sick to my stomach with anger and discomfort for the obvious injustice of the situation. I heard car doors shut and my name being called through cries of confusion. My mom had just arrived from picking my younger sister up from school. I stood up as Caroline advanced towards me and the visibility of her distress upset me even more. I tried to look composed for her but the moment we embraced each other, we began crying harder at the sight of each other’s mournfulness. I then felt my mom’s arms gently wrap around us, sharing one of her motherly, soothing hugs that anchored me instantly. The three of us tearfully looked at each other and decided it was time to take a look inside our fire invaded home. My dad guided us slowly inside to the foyer and feelings of disbelief hit me as I examined my home, gutted and blackened with smoke. There was water damage all over and most of our personal items were reduced to ashes. The thick smell of melted paint and scorched wood hung in the air. The lingering scent was unpleasantly bitter to my nostrils and seemed to my brain an abomination to the air. The temperature of the house was hot and humid as water continually leaked from the ceiling and walls. I was standing in a room that just moments before was a beastly burning inferno. Observing the devastation I once called my home, the emotional toll was unbearable. Slowing making my way into the living room, family portraits were now smothered in thick black residue and our furniture was melted as if it were plastic; I was devastated by the reality of my childhood home no longer being a home. So many family events took place right there in my living room. We would have evenings where all of us would gather together on a Friday night and watch old home movies that provided us a wonderful, happy opportunity to help us remember when we were younger. My parents and we kids would watch over and over again the silly antics around the house- birthday parties, holidays, sledding down the hill in the back yard, school presentations, and family vacations. I couldn’t help smiling as more memories filled my head, but the sensibility of the demolition brought me back when pieces of the roof began to drop onto the floor beside me. The mighty structure of flames was just the beginning of the careless destruction of my home. Heavy water damage was beginning to take over. The downstairs had growing balloons of water all over the ceiling and walls, just another apparent sign of the extensive loss of my home. Everything that was already contaminated by smoke was now sitting in water, helplessly. I heard a faint cry from inside the already molding couch in our game room. An instant panic hit me. No one was home when the fire ignited, but our pets where! I ran to the couch and pulled it out from the wall as if I were the incredible hulk. There sat Callie, our family cat, trembling and looking back at me in fear. Determined to save her, I scooped Callie up in my arms and raced out of the weakening room. She smelled of thick, smutty ash and stagnant rainwater. She pitifully wined as I carried her to the front yard. Glancing up, my mom was walking towards me from our neighbor’s house with our rescued puppy swaddled in her arms. A firefighter had saved our sweet Hallie when he first entered the burning structure of havoc. I felt a great sense of appreciation knowing that our pets, our little treasures, were safe and unharmed. Though my home was collapsing behind me, I had my family standing right beside me, and at that moment I knew we were going to be alright. The most touching fact was that our concerned neighbors were reaching out to my family with heartwarming contributions. They were willing to do anything to help. My parents would talk to them in such a strong and collected way. Watching my parents speak and carry themselves with fortitude reminded me that we could get through anything. I was so humbled by the neighbor’s response; I couldn’t help but feel a sense of acceptance. Just moments before, I felt helpless when examining the enormity of the destruction, but I had absolutely no control over whether the fire confiscated my home. The incredible outreach of our community was inspiring and helped me realize that we had magnificent support. I was able to stand back and accept my life now. I did not have a choice over the fire destroying my house but I had a choice in how I responded. I could choose to be immobilized or to move forward and find the light in the situation. I chose the light. In facing such a difficult misfortune, so many emotions are happening at once; disbelief, devastation, and acceptance. Returning home, I was in such disbelief of the disaster. I didn’t want to believe it and I just wanted to wake up from a bad dream. It all became a reality walking into my home that had just been invaded by mighty burning inferno. I was devastated to see our personal items, everything that made our house a home, ruined by black smoke and water damage. Memories continued to play through my head of what my home once was. Taking everything in, I accepted what was to come and with the support of our amazing community, my family and I would push forward. Each day we continue to establish a new kind of normal as we begin to redefine home.

The bees had grown stronger and the painful stings kept Melvin from obtaining honey. Melvin began to become depressed, longing for sweet, sweet tender honey. Growing hungrier and hungrier as the days rolled on Melvin began to have difficulty finding food and fending off his family from the vicious venomous snakes. One night Melvin woke in the mist of the night by a terrifying sliver of snakes all around his nest. As they did every night the snakes tried to break into the nest. Melvin held his dear family close in his arms and prayed as hard as he could to the great Gods of Olympus, in hope of living to see another day. The next day, the snakes moved on, without breaking into Melvin’s threshold. It was only a matter of time before the walls of his nimble house would give in to the strength of the snakes. Melvin decided, for the sake of his family’s survival, that he had to speak to Zues, the Great God of the Animal Kingdom, to urge him to restore balance to living things. After a brief goodbye and a quick kiss on the check from Betsy Melvin ventured to Greece. After 12 days of trekking through sands and swimming through waves Melvin finally arrived in the distant lands of Greece. Melvin marched right into the Olympus Palace and demanded to speak with Zeus immediately. After explaining his circumstances...

You walk up to our home feeling a sense of welcoming. When you finally walk into our house, the experience begins. The captivating smell transports you into another dimension. My mother loves to cook, and the aroma of spices and vegetables simmering in a pot leaves a strong impression throughout the home. The sound of a cook hard at work distracts you with clanging, chopping, and shaking of her tools. The warmth of the air with these sweet aromatic smells makes you feel invited and happy to be there. Upon entering you will also meet our dogs. They are very pleased to greet you, but all guests must first be approved by man’s best friend. Their submissiveness is very playful, and it is always customary to give a scratch or pat on their head. Both dogs wag their tails in excitement and with their tongue hanging out of their mouth they pant from the affection. The house is bright and airy with photographs of memories hanging about the walls. Strategically placed, every picture has a purpose in its occupied space. Grandmother

...came to me with some upsetting news. Velma was in the hospital. She wouldn’t tell me why but I could tell that it was bad by the worried look on her face. We visited her soon after, and I had no idea what to expect. We walked in with the nurse and I saw her laying there in the bed, motionless. She tried to talk but her voice shook and trembled. I was scared; I knew she was too. I visited her less often now because I was busy with school and sports. When I did, she looked happier and healthier. I was surprised how far she had come. She smiled and we talked more about what ever we could think of. I think the presence of each other comforted both of us. Almost a week later the doctors announced that she was being moved to a nursing home. I was happy for her. Even though she wasn’t in her apartment, it was a step closer to getting better for good. The doctors...

Your First Day on Your First Job

...I woke at 4:30 a.m., too excited to sleep anymore but anxious to start the journey to my workplace. ‘Make sure to drink at least a cup of tea’ was the forceful sound of my mother’s voice. She was happy for me, and wanted to ensure that I had a good start before beginning the workday. By 7:00 a.m., I was fully dressed in my long sleeve blue pant suit, paired with a florescent blouse and accessorized with my black shoes and brown leather bag. I kissed my mom goodbye and waited outside the house on the verandah for the sound of the blaring horn from the hired bus to take us to the workplace, a full seventeen miles from home. For the most part, the journey from St. Andrew’s to the parish of St. George’s was a smooth and uneventful ride. I travelled through the main winding mountainous road which took me through the rain forest, with its luscious pine trees. With the windows open, the fresh morning breeze smoothly bathed my face, giving it a refreshing feeling. The scent of the morning glory flowers filled the air with a sweet fragrance, almost like I was seated in a garden not a mini bus. The sound of the inspirational music filled the space in the fully packed bus greeted the air, thus making for a prayerful and reflective morning journey. As I sat there, I felt fully energized and uplifted for the day’s work ahead. The journey ended in the crowded bus...

Heaven on Earth

...Heaven On Earth “Far across the Atlantic ocean lies a land filled with riches beyond your wildest imagination. People believe it to be the second heaven. Heaven on earth is what they call it. The buildings are made out of glass that glitters like a thousand suns. The streets are made of gold and the air as clear as crystals. The waters are as sweet as milk and honey. The rivers are as pure a young virgin. It holds all manner of lights that could make a blind man see and blind him a second time.” These were the words of the town’s tale bearer Akim as all the children gathered around him during the many black out night to listen. Electricity was not dependable in Ghana. Black-outs are not uncommon and five black-outs a day is not an exaggeration. Listening to Akim was like sleeping to sweet fairy tale stories only that there was hope of living this fairy tale. Akim continued “some have sworn that, even if their feet could just touch the soil of this land then death is allowed to whisk them away because they have seen an honorable sight.” Akim had never been to this land but knows everything about it. He was the go to person if you need to know anything about the United States. He claimed to have many of relatives as residents of this land. He often showed us post cards and gadgets sent to him from them. The post cards were true testimonies of the lights that run across this great nation. Visiting Grandparents

...fourth grade class. “Excuse me, I’m sorry for interrupting but I have come to pick up my daughter. Today she is leaving to China”, said my mother. At last, my adventure starts today! No longer would I be under my mother’s grasps . No longer would I have to bore my head in despair and suffer the stifling weeks at home. Our Summer had began. Good-bye my fellow classmates, see you all next year. The day was lovely after all it was Summer. When me and my father waved our solid goodbyes to your family, I felt, that there were some ambiguities that day that my antennas could not receive, perhaps I was too young to take notice then and, also, to know the proper behavior. I trailed off with my father to the airport only to look forward in the freedom we could compensate together that Summer. I had yet to see my grandparents after five long years living in America. Maybe the reason for the cold goodbyes we shared that day we knew we would see each other and by a little over a month, time would snap in an instant. And so it came to pass that I arrived in Hong Kong an quiet girl that followed her father’s more experienced sense of direction. Upon walking to my grandparent’s home we passed through street-markets crowded with people. Most seemed to just pass by not in much interest to buy merchandise. We reached a familiar paltry building that held a arcade downstairs for the public entertainment and apartments upstairs for living space. My grandparents lived in a exotic building that...

Research Paper

...May 10, 2014 Home Sweet Home Everyday individuals are often forced to mature too quickly because of their environmental surroundings. The House on Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros, is an example of how a society has the ability to directly impact young lives, in turn creating necessary "rites of passage." Through her environment, Esperanza, one of the many girls living on Mango Street, learns how to survive in a world full the unknown. Some may believe that the setting for this novel has no bearing on young Esperanza; however, Esperanza's character and transition into adulthood are dramatically defined by her own surroundings and neighborhood. Sandra Cisernos's The House on Mango Street portrays the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago. She has a vision of what her dream home should look like. She dreams of a house with a large beautiful backyard, real staircase, more than one bathroom, and just a house that she is overall proud to live in. Her house on Mango Street is the complete opposite to her dreams. It was a small red house, with just one washroom, no private backyard or green lawns. Esperanza is clear that her house on Mango Street is not what she wants. More importantly through the process of finding herself she is able to put together a meaning of what it is like to feel "at home." Esperanza believes that to feel "at home" a person is comfortable, relaxed and at ease in their home. By the end of the book she does not find the home of her dreams...

Wilfred Owen

...In this anthology, The War Poems, Wilfred Owen, serves to convey the brutality meaninglessness, destruction and unnecessary loss of life that occurred as a consequence of war; his protest of such horrors is raw and violent. In particular, Owen uses several of his poems as a tribute to the innocent young soldiers who endured disquieting circumstances to suffer the complete suffocation of their mental and physical spirit; that is, they were reduced to a disheartening morbid state. Through the study of both ‘Anthem For Doomed Youth’ and ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est.’ Nonetheless, not all of Owen’s poems focus on the circumstance of soldiers some of his poems condemn those who send the young to war, providing them with “the old lie” that it is honorable to die for one’s country. Ultimately, Owen conveys his admiration of the sacrifice to engage in war, and shows how even ordinary people experience extraordinary circumstances. War’s relentless horror is exposed as Owen’s critical truth in ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est.’ structural manipulation, enhanced through poetic voice, allows Owen to graphically capture the horrific experience of a gas attack and its physical and psychological impact on the ordinary soldier. The appearance of traditional lyrics in full rhyme ‘sacks/backs … sludge/trudge’ is effectively destabilized by varied length, extinguishing conventional iambic pentameter just as traditional form and notions of war as noble and heroic became obsolete in 20th century modern warfare....
