...Capstone Checkpoint Name HUM130 Date Instructor Capstone Checkpoint I feel learning about world religions has given a better understanding to the meaning of different religions in certain cultures. I believe learning about different religions has provided in depth knowledge of the traditions and beliefs in world religions. Before this course, I did not have the understanding and knowledge of religions I now have. I feel I learned a tremendous amount in this course. I find religion to be a very interesting topic and enjoy learning about the similarities and differences. Additionally, the text was very instrumental in explaining the traditions, beliefs, and the history behind them. I feel this course has opened up my mind to many possibilities in regard to religion. I have sometimes questioned some of the beliefs in my own religion, Roman Catholicism. I will now and always remain true to the traditions and beliefs of Catholicism, but I found certain traditions and beliefs in other faiths interesting and some I may adopt in my own life to become a better person. Learning others beliefs and attitudes is important to provide an understanding of another’s way of thinking. Having knowledge of other religions eliminates judgment of others. Instead of immediately judging someone because of his or her beliefs, an understanding will help to treat one another with respect and to respect other’s beliefs. Many people hate other cultures, religions, and declare...

...Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo: Buddhism and the Way of The Lotus Sutra Mary Elise Filipy HUM/130 April 28, 2011 Dr. Gary Carson Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo: Buddhism and the Way of The Lotus Sutra ( Blue Lotus Buddha) Since the beginning of time, people have looked to something beyond themselves for answers about life and the world around them. Early humans believed there must be some power, greater than themselves, controlling the things they could not understand, control or explain. From these beliefs came the development of religions, and the many gods and deities that accompany them. Today, religion provides us with spiritual guidance, directs us in moral matters and how to conduct ourselves, and helps us to prepare for what happens after death. One such religious practice is Buddhism. Buddhism Buddhism. The word conjures up thoughts of chanting monks in orange robes, smoky temples filled with incense, and golden statues in flower filled gardens. To the unfamiliar, Buddhism is a mysterious religion, full of strange practices and rituals. Most people in this country, know only what they have seen in the movies and on television. While there are many differences between Buddhism and religions that are more familiar to westerners, such as Catholicism, Buddhism is a beautiful, complex, and fascinating ancient religion. Buddhism began more than 2,500 years ago in Asia. It is a religion based on the teachings of Siddharta Guatama, as a way to help people...

...Week 7 Assignment: Christianity, History and Practice your name here HUM/130 2/12/02 Terry Barnes Sources: www.biography.com/people/jesus-christ-9354382 www.theopedia.com/Church_history our textbook Jesus Christ has many great stories behind him. These stories are called miracles, depending on who you ask. Yet, one thing cannot be denied, and that is that Jesus Christ did exist and his influence is still felt by the Catholic faith. Jesus Christ was born in approximately 6 AD in Bethlehem, from his parents Mary and Joseph. Yet, according to the faith, his actual father is God. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, as Mary was a virgin. Joseph, his legal father, was a carpenter who made furniture with his hands. Jesus would also become a carpenter later on in his life. Some of these points are argued between religions, yet I am not going to touch on it in this paper. His childhood is shrouded in mystery, as there are little to no records of his life during his childhood and early teenage years. Many argued that he did not initially except his role or fate as God’s only son and lived a life like any other would at the time. You can even look in the Bible for such a hypothesis, as the stories of his life suddenly jump from age 16 to age 30. Where are the missing texts that chronicle his life during these missing fourteen years? This is what many claim that he rejected his “destiny” or found it all too big to cope with. Later...

To its members, The Church is a living, breathing line, unbroken, from today back through the decades and centuries to Jesus Christ. The Church is a symbol of traditional faith, an icon of traditional values, and a sanctuary from the evils of the world. ...Week 6: Five Pillars of Islam HUM130 Week 6: Five Pillars of Islam The central theme of the Islam belief system is that of a monotheistic culture or a culture that believes in One God. The name of the Islamic god is Allah. Allah is similar to Christianity as the major roles God is responsible for is creation, teaching and judgment. As humans following Allah, we are to build a moral foundation in order to live our lives fully while worshiping Allah. These central beliefs tie into the Five Pillars of Islam as well as they help to define a foundation for the faith system to rely back on. The Five pillars of Islam are: Shahadah, Salat, Zakat, Sawm and Hajj. The Shahadah is the equivalent to the First commandment for Christians. This pillar is the belief that Allah is the one and only God to be worshiped under the Islam faith. Allah had prophets to help pass on teachings and revelations. The greatest true prophet was Muhammad who delivered the last and final revelation. Prayer is very important to the Islamic faith. The pillar of Salat is the schedule in which the Islamic followers must pray. Their worship schedule occurs 5 times a day, including Early Morning, Noon, Mid-Afternoon, Sunset and evening. The worshipper must be clean and bow to symbolize submission to Allah. The pillar of Zakat is the giving back to the community through taking care of the poor. It is Muslim belief that in order to take care of the poor, it is crucial for the rich...

...Hinduism Paper HUM130 University of Phoenix, Axia College * Hinduism known today as Sanatana Dharma lacks a uniting belief system. It is still considered a religion due to a number of factors, because of this Hinduism is a challenging religion to define. The Hindu religion varies vastly, and is considered both monotheistic and polytheistic. Various cultural and societal influences have made Hinduism vital to India the origin of Hinduism. Hinduism like Christianity has several denominations or categories. Millions of deities are worshiped by Hindus because they feel the divine does not have to have just one face, but can have many faces. “Three main groupings of Hindus are the Saktas who worship a Mother Goddess, Saivites who worship the god Siva, and Vaishnavites who worship the god Vishnu. Every follower has a preferred deity while honoring other deities also.” The collective belief system of Hindus is what makes up the religion. ...HINDUISM HUM130 07/29/2012 HINDUISM In Hinduism there are three major philosophical systems “Samkhya, Advaita Vedanta, and Yoga. Each of these systems represents a path towards enlightenment. Although the underlying theory and beliefs of these systems are similar, there are also striking dissimilarities between each philosophy. SAMKHYA The Samkhya is thought to be the oldest system of Hindu belief. Founded by the mythical sage Kapila, Samkhya teaches that there are two states of reality. The first state; known as the Purusha, or self, which is eternally wise, pure, and free, beyond chance, beyond cause. (citation needed) The other is Prakriti, the cause of the material universe. All suffering is said to come from out confusion of Prakriti with Purusha. Being able to separate and understand the two is a key part of finding true transcendent reality. Advaita Vedanta Unlike the Samkhya philosophy Advaita Vedanta teaches that there is only one single reality. The current view of Advaita Vedanta comes from the teachings of Shankara. The old views of Vedanta taught that the human self (Atman) is an emanation of Brahman. Shankara’s teachings state that Atman and Brahman are actually one and the same, and that the material life is not another reality as is believed in Samkhya but an illusion. The absolute spirit (Brahman) is considered to be the essence of everything with no beginning and no end. An analogy that...

...Jesus and Mohammed HUM130 Jesus and Mohammed Jesus and Mohammed are two of human history's most important figures. Who were these men and why are they so important to religion today? Jesus of Nazareth is the key figure in what is arguably the world's most practiced faith; Christianity. Mohammed is the central figure in what is the world's second largest religion by adherents, Islam. The accounts of the lives of both of these men may be argued for centuries to come. Their exact actions, exact words and very existence are in some instances matters of faith rather than fact. However, what is undeniable is the impact that both of these men have had on modern society. The words, actions and teachings of these men are so important that wars for the true ideology have been waged over their names for centuries. Who they were and their true nature though, is perhaps what is forgotten in this modern world. The history of Jesus of Nazareth is a case of conjecture and faith, however there does exist the commonly accepted history of his life. According to most scholars, Jesus was born sometime between 6 and 4 BCE. Most scholars accept this figure as it is reflected in the Christian scripture that Jesus was born during the reign of Herod the Great. Although there is no exact date known as to determine when Jesus was born, it is celebrated in most Christian faiths on December 25th on the holiday of Christmas. The ministry of Jesus is largely documented in what is known as the new...

...Christianity VS Catholicism HUM130 October 10th, 2010 Regena Weatherford Christianity VS Catholicism Christianity and Catholicism are two very different religions. Any person who has not studied these religions closely might be tempted to say that they are the same, or at least share most of the same beliefs, but this is simply not true. Take for instance the foundation that these two religions are founded on. Christianity was founded solely upon the Holy Scriptures, whereas Catholicism was based on the doctrines taught by Popes and Bishops. With foundations so different it can only be assumed that the beliefs would be different as well. There are several main differences between Catholicism and Christianity: how they perceive the Bible, Salvation, Baptism, the Holy Trinity and evolution. “The Bible is the sole authority for Christian beliefs and practices. The Catholic Church stresses a balance between Biblical support and the tradition of the Church itself.” (Robinson, June). This difference is based on the foundations of the religion itself. Christians believe that all rules of faith have to come from the Holy Bible, which is the written Word of God. They also believe that the Bible is authoritative and clear, and it can be read and understood by anyone who chooses to read it. In the Catholic faith, knowledge is passed down from Popes and Bishops through the church which is then taught to the people of the religion. There are scriptures with these subjects in them...

...The History of Jesus and Muhammad hum130 March 20, 2011 Michael Emmart The History of Jesus and Muhammad The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord." --Luke 2:10-11 The religion Christianity was founded on the life and teachings Of Jesus Christ. Around or just before the Common Era, about 2000 years ago Jesus was born in a small town called Bethlehem. Jesus was born unto a devout Jewess by the name of Mary and a carpenter named Joseph. Jesus was conceived by a miracle of the Holy Spirit before Mary and Joseph had any sexual relationship. Jesus was born in Bethlehem because the Roman emperor stated that all families register for a census in their ancestral hometowns. Joseph and Mary made the long difficult trip to Bethlehem, only to find that all the inns were full, with no inns to stay at, Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable among the animals. The Gospels do not talk a lot about Jesus’ early life, but some information can be traced back to some references elsewhere. Jesus was from a town called Nazareth, where he probably worked with his father and trained to be a carpenter. At the age of twelve Jesus wander away from his parents into Jerusalem to discuss religion in the temple; the rabbis were very impressed on the knowledge, understanding and answers when discussing the Torah. When his parents finally found him, Jesus...

...Buddhism HUM130 02/19/2012 Andrea Lynch Buddhism The world we live in today contains many people with varying belief systems. There are some who adhere to a strict one God policy, and there are even others that exist still today that believe that there are many gods each with their own unique facets. These facets they say represent different aspects of the human condition and natural world. However, there is one religion known as Buddhism that seems to stray away from conventional belief systems, even within its small part of the world. This paper will discuss its beginnings, beliefs, rituals, personages, a small interview, as well as some comparisons to another popular religion. The religion known as Buddhism began some time about 2,500 years ago by a man named Siddhartha (BDEA/BuddhaNet, 2012). Siddhartha was born the son of a wealthy landowner who was want for nothing in his early life. According to religious texts, his mother had a dream before he was conceived of an elephant carrying a lotus blossom while entering her womb. His father was informed by a local sage that his son would one day be the world’s greatest ruler and so took steps to hide the sorrows and pain of the world away from him by keeping him within the palace walls. As a young man, Siddhartha lived a life of pure luxury with any earthly item within his reach. Due to his future military status, he also learned martial arts and was at one time even married delivering him his own son. This life...
