The two works of art I chose to compare are The Eros Sleeping at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Aphrodite at the Louvre Musuem. The Eros Sleeping is my first choice for a piece of art between 30,000 B.C. and 500 C.E. I think this is a beautiful piece of art. While looking through thousands and thousands works of art at several different museum sites this piece really caught my eye. The Eros Sleeping is a bronze statue from the Hellenistic period, and dated at the 3rd-2nd century B.C. It is one of a few bronze statues to have survived from antiquity. The statue is of a cute little chubby baby with wings asleep on a rock that was added at a later date. (Eros Sleeping, nd) The second work of art I chose was also from the Hellenistic period and was dated to 100 B. C is The Aphrodite. Aphrodite is a beautiful Greek sculpture of a half- naked woman sort of leaning to one side. (Aphrodite, nd) Two blocks of marble were used to make it. Her arms were never found. I do believe that thid piece was shaped from either a modled or was carved from lime stone but when you look at it, you can see that the lips are pouted and the brow is angery looking the hair is curled. The color is a balckish gray color and the left eye is destroied but it is a good piece of art. The other thing about this piece is that it is life like and it is of the akkadian king. There should be more on this piece that I cannot discribe as I am not sure what it is but this piece scares me just a bit I think of this as eveil but from what I can make of it he was a ruler that did not treat his people kind at all. This art form can take on many purposes usually that of personal expression, social cause, or visual delight. One of the most notable artists of this genre is a man who goes simply by the name of Banksy. In this piece of his, he combines his passion of street fighting with his pacifist ardor in the depiction of a protester whose Molotov cocktail transforms into a bouquet of flowers. It is a two dimensional piece done with mainly spray paint and stencil created by the artist using a material such as cardboard. The artist draws the image on to the card board and using an exacto knife he carves out the image. He then locates a good spot on a wall or building and proceeds to set the stencil in place and go over the needed areas with spray-paint. In this image is monochromatic the only color that is used is black; using implied motion, the artist finds a way to give a lifelike feeling. This is an example of figurative art that uses emphasis to draw attention to the bouquet of flowers. The flowers contrast the assumed intention of the protester. Both men communicated their visions through their works or masterpieces. I will attempt to compare and contrast two works of art, one by Michelangelo and the other by Leonardo. The masterpiece I chose from Michelangelo Buonarroti is The Last Judgment. This work was painted on the alter wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. Michelangelo started this work in 1508 and finished in 1512. (Art and the Bible, nd) It represents the second coming of Christ and the final judgment of God. The picture presents Christ as judge and condemns everyone on his left to eternal fire, as he raises those on his right to heaven to be with the saints and angels. The picture radiates out from the center figure of Christ. Originally all the people were painted naked, but after quite a bit of controversy they were painted over with veils and loincloths. The Last Judgment is monochromatic and flesh tones and sky colors dominate the work. Yellow, orange, green and blue are scattered throughout the painting. The legend states that the widow Judith endears herself to an enemy general, Holofernes, and subsequently beheads him as he lies drunk in his bed (Artlex, 2010). The death of their leader overwhelms the Assyrians and they disband leading many to the conclusion that the widow’s actions save Israel (Artlex, 2010). This representational piece is a two dimensional oil on canvas painting that exhibits soft tones in most of the image. The deeper or more vibrant shades of red near the bottom of the dress worn by the heroin stand out against the earthy browns and greens of the landscape of the scene. The pale pink of the skin of her bare foot which she has propped atop decapitated head of the general emphasizes the grayed and dying body part. The minimum contrast, or gray of the general’s head devalues it and makes it a part of the background while the viewer’s eye is drawn more to Judith and the light to dark shading of red or chiaroscuro of her dress.
