What JMJ is, what we do, promote that in the community to help secure volunterrs, fundin,g, promote awareness. Do a lot of strategic planning on how we're gonna grow. Trying to figure out what addicitonal programs we can offer. And then go out and do the speaking and build awareness. Various churches, youth ministries, and drink beer too. Whatever we need to do, oh I'll do it. I'm also an event planner. It's wonderful. Up until july, I was an engineer. Doing it for 11 years. Involved in JMJ, I loved everything about it, I was just busy. I had 3 little kids and work and all kinds of stuff going on. Not as involved as wanted to be. In April, our previous exec director wanted to retire. Looked at husband and said wanted to do this. Very fufilling. Transition into role. Completely new to me. ...I am 47 years old and I live in Texarkana, Texas. I moved to Texarkana about twelve years ago to get away from the craziness in Houston, Texas. So, I decided to move to the country where I now live with my boyfriend, two, toypoodles, a ferret and my boyfriends parents. We all live in the country on 5 ½ acres. Our home is 2 homes in one which are both separated, the parents live on one side and we live on the other. Once you have been use to living the city life and move to the country it can be quite an adjustment because there is not much to do in Texarkana, Tx compared to Houston. For instance, simple things for me like driving to town seem like such a chore. Since moving to the country instead of going shopping for dinner no more then a mile from home I now have to drive over fifteen miles to town. Sometimes i feel like I have wasted my entire day. The weather was rainy and due to the weather issue animals at the zoo mostly don’t have much of the movement and some of them are at their indoor area that cannot be seen by visitors. I observed six species including Patas monkeys, Orangutan, Black and white colobus monkeys, Red ruffed lemurs, Western lowland gorillas, and human from six different locomotor patterns and found out the relationship between their locomotor patterns and anatomy. Discussion/Data Collection Patas monkeys, also called red guenons, are terrestrial quadruped monkeys in the family Cercopithecidae and the only species found in the genus Erythrocebus. ...the assignment on monkeys and their daily lifestyles I must say that I found it very interesting to see the different types of monkey’s and their interaction with others throughout the zoo, along with the experiment that was demonstrated. I can say that there was a big difference in the monkey’s and the way that they communicated in the zoo, rather than the experiment with live interaction. I say this because I noticed that the monkey in the mechanical experiment was more timid rather than the monkeys in the live zoo. The Harlow’s experiment showed that the mechanical monkey with the cloth was something that the baby monkey bonded to due to the fact that it was not completely wired, and had comfort with the mechanical monkey that it seemed to be nursed on throughout the baby monkey’s life. The monkeys in the zoo, that which was in a group seemed to be less timid and terrified of the situations that they were in. I say this because the monkey in the experiment seemed to be scared at various points throughout the video, making the scenario different for each situation. ...Monkey Love Monkey love is a strange subject for me. I have a hard time correlating monkey behavior to human behavior. Although, I understand that he performed this experiment to convince psychologists that the behaviorist meal-dispenser model of mother love was incorrect, I think that Harry Harlow performed his classic study about love in vain. John B. Watson stated that "When you are tempted to pet your child, remember that mother love is a dangerous instrument." In the last century children were viewed as adults at a very young age. They would take on many important duties, so I can understand that too much love would inhibit children from maturing quickly and being able to take on adult roles as early as age 8. Too much parental love definitely has an adverse effects on children. I do see the importance of having a primary attachment figure, nevertheless, children need to explore the world and not always be under our protective eye. They need to be independent and gain confidence through increased responsibility. This is why the whole monkey experiment doesn’t correlate to my view of child rearing and development. People usually fail to mention this is actually a thought experiment and pass it off as a real experiment. It’s not. It’s a thought experiment based on an actual experiment published in a 1967 paper by a researcher called G.R. Stephenson (cited below), and it goes like this: Five monkeys were placed in a cage. In the middle of the cage there was a ladder with a banana on top. As one might expect one of the monkeys raced toward the ladder and as he started to climb, the researchers sprayed the monkey with cold water. In addition to the monkey climbing the ladder, however, the four monkeys at the bottom of the ladder were also sprayed with ice cold water. A second monkey attempted to climb the ladder and the same thing happened: the researchers sprayed all 5 monkeys with cold water. After a while none of the monkeys dared to climb the ladder to get their hands on the delicious banana, regardless of the temptation.
