I Spy by Graham Greene is a short novel about Charlie Stowe. Charlie Stowe is a 12-year-old boy living with his mother during the war. His Father is absent and is described a ‘wraith’. The story revolves around Charlie stealing cigarettes from his Father’s shop and the feelings this stirs up in him. He is a good boy but bullying at school has driven him to do something that is wrong and against the law. The story looks at Charlie’s fear, and his relationship with his Father and Mother. It looks at how we decide what is right and wrong in a world where this is no longer clear.
The story starts with Charlie lying awake at night listening to the wind and waves. He is full of fear at what he feels he has to do. He is the only boy at school who does not smoke and is being mocked by other boys because of this. He waits until his mother is asleep ‘ ……could hear behind his mother’s snores………..’ to creep downstairs into his Father’s tobacconist’s shop to steal cigarettes.
Before he can do this, he hears his Father’s voice along with two other men. Charlie ‘cowers into the darkness’ of the shop and prays he is not found. He is full of fear.
He hears his Father ask the men if they want some cigarettes but they reply that they shouldn’t as they are on duty. His Father goes on to say he does not wish to wake the family, when they offer him the chance to speak to his wife ‘never do today what you can put off till tomorrow’. His father reaches for his coat and leaves with the men. Charlie suddenly realises that he and his Father are alike at that moment ‘doing things in the dark which frightened him’. He suddenly felt the urge to go down and ‘tell his father that he loved him’ but he heard ‘quick steps going away’. The story ends with Charlie alone in the house with his mother, falling asleep.
Charlie is treated differently to the other boys in school because he has never smoked a cigarette. Smoking at the age of 12 was, and still is, illegal and Charlie had never wanted to break the law before. To do so now, indicates the level of bullying and mocking he was experiencing at school. Breaking the law, and risking the anger from his father if caught backs up the argument that the amount of fear Charlie felt at that moment in time from his bullies was bigger than this.
Charlie is living with his mother at the time the story is placed. He loves his mother dearly. He has a ‘passionate, demonstrative love’ for her. She appears in the story as a vibrant character. Full of life and laughter. He sees her as friend to everyone and someone who loves the Queen who she describes as the ‘dear Queen’. She is obviously a patriot as she describes Germans as ‘Hun’s’, who are seen in the story as ‘monsters lurking in Zeppelins’.
Charlie’s Father feels unreal to him and is described as a ‘wraith, pale thin and indefinite’. He describes a relationship where Charlie feels largely invisible by a Father ’who noticed him only spasmodically’. It seems they know little of his whereabouts at any time ‘Tonight he said he would be in Norwich and yet you never knew’.
When Charlie hides from his Father and the two men, he feels curiosity mixed with fear. He knows he is in trouble and doing wrong and is very scared of what will happen to him if he is discovered. He has to remain hidden but in doing so he hears something more frightening than his own circumstance. His Father talks of leaving without saying goodbye. The men talk of being on duty suggesting they are official – police or military. They are taking him away and won’t let him out of their sight. Charlie knows this is a very bad situation and feels the urge to risk punishment to tell his Father that he loves him. Even at 12, Charlie recognises that something very serious is happening and that he may not see his Father again. There is an attempt at humour from one of the officials saying’ where there’s life ………’ but his voice trails off and his Father ‘tries to laugh’.
I think that Charlie was trying to stop the bullying by stealing the cigarettes and because he felt no love at that time for his Father, who was also absent for much of the time, he felt little guilt in stealing the cigarettes. The fear at the beginning of the story came from the searchlight ‘seeking enemy airships’. The darkness of the house, and the sweeping of the lights makes Charlie ‘despair’. His fear increases when a light shines through the window and a hand tries the door. This spurs Charlie on to try a cigarette. It is as if he has nothing to lose. The fear at the end of the story comes from what those men wanted from his Farther and what they were going to do to him. His Father talks of the shop being sold ‘Else the neighbours’ll be wrecking it’. This gives us the clue that his Father was a collaborator or a spy, as people caught doing either would have their houses and businesses wrecked or burnt down at that time in history.
Life is really hard for Charlie and he wants to make his life easier at school so he gives in to the pressure to steal and smoke cigarettes. I think he hoped this would help him be more popular with the boys at school and help him cope with life without his Father being there for him. I feel sorry for him. I think his Father was mostly to blame for how Charlie felt. His rough time at school and rough time at home were most likely linked.
I think that Charlie did not have to smoke to be popular but he was lost so did it anyway. I think the circumstances in which he stole were understandable. His Mother was doing everything she could but his Father could have shown more love towards Charlie. Everyone needs a Father to support them and give them advice on how to stand up to bullies and on how to behave and Charlie’s Father wasn’t there for him.
In conclusion, I sympathise with Charlie in the story. He has circumstances in his life that mean he has not the strength to stand up to the bullies at school. He feels driven to steal. His Father is absent and he lives in fear. Charlie knows his life has suddenly changed and we leave him ‘surprised and in awe’ at what he has just seen and heard, knowing inside that he may have seen his Father for the last time.

I Spy Analysis

...Analysis and interpretation of I spy -by Graham Green The main character in the text is Charlie Stowe, who is twelve year old and from England. My guess is the Eastern shore by Norwich, because Charlie Stowe says, that he can hear the waves (page 38 line 9) and he tells us, that his father should be in Norwich these days (page 39 line 4). The other boys in school are bullying Charlie because he has never smoked a cigarette before (page 38 line 13). In 1930 smoking cigarettes was a standard practice to do. Therefore, he take the matter into his own hands and steal a cigarette from his father’s Tobacco shop, even though he knows it is wrong and illegal (page 40 line 3-5). Charlie knows it is illegal, but he think it is more important to get the cigarette than the consequences of being caught with his hands in the cookie jar (page 40 line 3-5). The other protagonist in the story is Charlie’s father, Mr. Stowe. Charlie does not really like his dad, he describes him as an “unreal wraith” (page 38 line 18). As the story continues, we find out that Mr. Stowe has been taking to charge for being a German spy. The two men who escorts Mr. Stowe have identical suits, bowlers, mackintoshes that were how the Bobbies were dressed. The Bobbies probably come from the British MI-5. Mr. Stowe has just come to his house to get his jacket before he probably will go to trial and in worst-case execution. We get a little clue about Mr. Stowe being a German spy, because he is a tobacconist...

The Abcs of Terrorism

...I am working on four or five major themes, but have found amazing connections between them. Four areas of immediate concern, in reverse order, are Osama Bin Laden, the Israeli Mossad, the CIA, the Holocaust. A fifth is the racism in the US judicial system, going back to the Civil war and to the foundation of the US. As a backdrop to all of this is work I have done using Joseph Campbell's series on Mythology with Bill Moyers, specifically, the Isis/Horus/Osiris myth predating the Mary/Jesus/God myth. Intertwined with this is Nietzsche's Anti-Christ, a work which I wish you had taught when you had the chance at WVSC. Many books have led me to many conclusions that you may or may not be aware of. The one you wanted the title of the last time we talked seriously is: Was the CIA involved in the JFK assassination? by Mark Lane. It has the info about how the CIA tried to kill Fidel Castro that you referred to once in class, except it was his wife, not a 16 year old, that was going to poison him. The CIA had told her he was cheating on her. Mark Lane is an attorney who managed Kennedy's New York campaign in 1960 when he was running for President. He is still alive in Virginia, in Charlottesville. You can find his address with 411locate.com. Amazingly, it turns out that the US hired 1000s of SS/Gestapo after the World War to spy in the USSR. The Crucible

...jennifer lux 12/8/15 The Crucible analysis “We consume our tomorrows fretting about our yesterday”- Persius. There have been moments in history where people were too consumed in fear that they broke many of their morals and due to powerful situations people behaved differently than their normal self. A play called the Crucible was written in 1953 by Author Miller to portray the unfairness at that time due to people being accused of witches with little to no evidence and then hanged. This event was called the Salem witch trials, which took place in the province of Massachusetts Bay. This play is an allegory to the McCarthy Hearings that took place from 1950 to 1956. The McCarthy hearings occurred in 1947; President Truman ordered background checks of every civilian in service to the government due to a fear of people within the United States being a communist spy. The fear of communism intensified when a high ranked official Alger Hiss was convicted of being a communist spy. Senator Joseph McCarthy stepped in and convinced/alarm people within the U.S that there were Communist and Communist sympathizers that would try to overthrow the government.  As a result, he formed a special Congressional committee to investigate Americans who were suspected of Communist activities and this movement was named McCarthyism. The Crucible is a play that is universal and enduring because it uses allegory and archetypes to teach readers...

I Spy

...Graham Greene “I Spy” The text under stylistic analysis “I Spy” is written by Graham Greene in the style of fiction. It deals with author’s feelings and emotions about relations at school, relations in the family. The main theme of the story is how main character of the story Charlie Stowe was able to steal some of his father’s stock - a packet with cigarettes from his father’s shop, with the purpose to prove his classmates that he is not a little boy. The idea of the story is that real parents should pay enough attention to their children, to bring them up properly in order that there wasn’t conflict’s in their family. So in the beginning of the story we have an exposition, where we get to know about the main character Charlie Stowe; the time of the seen is night. Charlie Stowe waited in his bedroom until he heard his mother snore. Then we got to know that it was the time of war, as ’searchlight passed across the sky,… seeking enemy airship’. Then Charlie draught the thought the cracks in the window frame. We have a detached construction in the second paragraph from the world ‘But the thought of the tobacconist’s shop…’ where author pays our attention to the fact that Charlie wanted to smth with it. then we see that he was 12 years old and that boys at “County school” nocked at him because he had never smoked a cigarette. The author uses periphrases concerning to cigarettes “The packet were piled twelve deep below”. The cigarettes were called Gold Flake and Players...

Textual Analysis

...Textual Analysis Coursework Essay For this essay I shall be comparing Skyfall (2012) to Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) both in the spy genre of films. I will be focusing on the way both films portray the differences in roles between male and female characters. I chose Skyfall from the 007 series; due to the fact M (Judi Dench) plays a more significant role within the film. It also takes a different approach on the character of Eve Moneypenny (Naomie Harris), as she is shown doing fieldwork alongside Bond (Daniel Craig) at the start of the film. Of course like any other Bond film, Skyfall also includes women who 007 will form a ‘relationship’ with (normally ending in their demise). I will be discussing if women in Skyfall are shown in a stereotypical and perhaps borderline sexiest way. My other choice of film, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol also stars female characters, although they have a more predominant role throughout the film then Skyfall. One of Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) team members is Jane (Paula Patton) and she is one of the main leading characters. Till around halfway in the film, a primary antagonist is Sabine Moreau (Lea Seydoux). It could still be said that these two characters, despite having a big role within the film, have been somewhat subjected to being portrayed in an idealistic way of women throughout the film. Skyfall is the 23rd instalment in the 007 franchises and was released on October 23th 2012. A new director on the Bond scene directed...

Deterioration of Chavez

...Deterioration of Chavez Chavez_Cancer http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/10/us-venezuela-chavez-idUSTRE7994RB20111010 With the Venezuelan elections coming up, Hugo Chavez, the current president of Venezuela, is trying to win the elections again after being 13 years in possession of the power. At the same time, Chavez’s health has been deteriorating as he announced he has cancer. He also took the cancer look by shaving his hair off and going bald. On the other hand, Chavez has recently been leaving Venezuela unexpectedly going to Cuba leaving his people unattended, meanwhile the media has not always been able to report exactly why the president had to leave his people. It is not the media that is at fault, but the president himself who is trying to hide things; the president himself is at fault of turning Venezuela into a fake democracy in order to keep the power himself. First we will be looking at Chavez’s health conditions in the past years. In June of 2011 Chavez left Venezuela and underwent unscheduled surgery in Cuba for pelvic abscess. After being absent for almost a month from his country, on June 30th, 2011, Chavez announced that he was recovering from an operation removing a cancerous tumor. The Vice President then stated that Chavez remained will “full exercise” of power and that there was no need to transfer powers despite of being absent from Venezuela. On July 2nd, 2011, the newspaper “El Periodico de Catalunya” stated that Chavez had “colon cancer that...

...Intelligence for the Twenty-First Century ALAN DUPONT Strategic discourse over the past decade has been dominated by a debate over the nature of future warfare and whether or not there is a ‘revolution in military affairs’ (RMA). Supporters contend that developments in military technology, especially precision guidance and high-speed data processing, in conjunction with advances in doctrine and strategy, will fundamentally transform the way in which future wars will be fought and privilege RMAcapable forces in the contest to achieve battlefield dominance.1 Sceptics, on the other hand, regard the RMA as being more evolutionary than revolutionary, and argue that many of the technical advances associated with the RMA do not necessarily presage a paradigm shift in warfare.2 However, all agree that timely, accurate and useable intelligence will be critical to the successful conduct of war in the twenty-first century, perhaps more so than in any previous era. It is surprising, therefore, how little academic attention has been devoted to the changes that are taking place in the technology, management and integration of the intelligence systems that will underpin any RMA. It is the contention of this article that the transformation of intelligence architectures, particularly in the West, is no less profound than that of the weapons, platforms and warfighting systems they are designed to support and enhance. Moreover, the cumulative weight of the changes in prospect will redefine the...

Robin Hood

...INDIVIDUAL CASE ANALYSIS EXAM 1 Situation Analysis Robin Hood and his Merrymen envision overthrowing the evil Sheriff and redistributing the wealth to the needy commoners. The current objective of the group is to pillage travelers and to give back to the community with no solid guidance to those engaged in those activities. In their pursuit of this endeavor they allowed men to join who may not have a complete sense of right and wrong; only those that had the drive to rise up against the Sheriff. Because of the lack of requirements for joining the group is not moving towards accomplishing to goal of de-seating the Sheriff and his allies. In fact, the Sheriff and his allies have with good communication and ample resources, have been able to raise enough defenses to retaliate and potentially put down the resistance. Robin Hood’s situation is one that is need of a solid purpose and strong values. In the business of pillaging and distribution of wealth the key stakeholders are Robin Hood, the original band of Merrymen, and the farmers and countrymen who provide for and enable the band. Battle of the Alamo

...The Battle of the Alamo Abstract This paper is a battle analysis of the Battle of the Alamo, which took place in 1836. It reviews the location and its significance within the war for independence that was taking placing during that time. The actions by the Texas revolutionary forces and Mexicans leading up to and during the battle are listed within the writing. It reveals the issue between the force stationed at the Alamo and their superior, General Sam Houston. The defenders at the Alamo didn’t receive support that was needed in order to provide intelligence of the Mexican force that was on its way. On the other hand, they didn’t listen to the order to vacate the fort. These are a couple of the major problems that took place before and during the battle. Although the battle was essential to inspiring the rest of the Texan forces, it leads me to believe that this important conflict could have turned out differently. The Battle of the Alamo The Battle of the Alamo is the most famous battle of the Texas revolution that took place in the early 1800s. “For many Americans and most Texans, the battle has become a symbol of patriotic sacrifice” (Hardin, 2010). Even though the Texans lost the battle, it contributed to the successful war for independence against Mexico. There were, at least, two decisions that may have altered the consequence of the Battle of the Alamo if more cautiously considered. The defenders at the Alamo didn’t receive support that was needed in order to...

...Intelligence. You'll hear it used quite a lot in the news; as a noun, as in, Intelligence Ministry or intelligence agents. Put simply, we use it in the news to refer to information or analysis, provided by government agencies on matters of national interest or state security. Who is the information, intelligence or the analysis of knowledge provided to? It goes to the government of the day, and it’s usually gathered, and given, in secret. To quote from the American secret service, the CIA or Central Intelligence Agency: "We are the eyes and ears of the nation and at times its hidden hand." Britain's security service, MI5, says it exists to protect national security, using techniques such as surveillance, or following people, and listening to their conversations. We most often hear about the activities of intelligence agencies when things go wrong, or their work crosses into the political arena. You'll hear talk of intelligence agents, secret service people, spies, or, very informally, spooks. You'll also hear intelligence used in other news stories, stories about human intelligence, or how clever we are; whether there's intelligent life on other planets, another reference to the ability of the brain; and artificial intelligence, which refers to the problem-solving abilities of computers. Now, I wonder if they know how to keep a secret. News Words bbclearningenglish.com © British Broadcasting Corporation 2010 Page 1 of 1...

Nsa Surveillance Program

...NSA Surveillance Program The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) was created in 1978 as a response to past presidential abuses of massive domestic wiretapping and surveillance that were conducted by the National Security Agency (NSA) on many innocent Americans. FISA was designated to limit warrantless foreign intelligence surveillance for national security purposes and to issue the extent to which NSA could seize domestic communications. An executive power would need a warrant approved by FISA and only for the cases where the sole intention for the surveillance was to obtain foreign intelligence information (Skalski 15). Things changed shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001 when President Bush secretly gave authorization to the NSA to wiretap Americans on the US soil without a warrant from FISA. By the same year, the Bush Administration passed the Patriotic Act that enabled FBI to demand the sharing of “any tangible things sought relevant to an authorized investigation” (Barnett 4), including strictly domestic records. Also, three days after the terrorist attacks, the Congress passed AUMF (Authorization for Use of Military Force) Act that was a necessity, but it was wrongly used by the Bush Administration as the reason of permission for the massive spying program. Because of the secrecy of these surveillance transmissions, the American public had no idea of the existence of these...
