...Health Science major, I did not realize how big of a role reading, writing and communicating plays in the health sciences field until I start taking my degree specific classes. All of the writing thus far has helped me realize how important being a good writer is, and helped me to see some of my strengths and weaknesses. I have never truly liked writing especially in the academic setting, but I know how important it is. Writing is a good way of expressing yourself and reflecting and analyzing your thoughts. I have never been confident in my writing skills, but I have seen major improvement over the year and hope to continue to grow as a reader and a writer. Improvements in My Writing I have saw...

...different uses for writing. Some use it to channel their creativity, some use it as a means of making money and some, like me, use it to vent. I always had writing assignments in school but none of them really had an impact on my life until the summer before junior year in high school. That summer was a terrible summer for me. Nothing went the way I had hoped and I was unhappy. My boyfriend and I broke up the night before my last exam. I would talk to my friends about it but I felt like it became too much for them. I knew they wanted to make me happy so they would listen but I didn’t feel right about putting them through it so I started writing. Whenever I needed a break from everyone around me, I would grab a piece of paper and a pen and just start pouring my thoughts onto paper. It was usually about how I was going through a tough time, which now seems increasingly petty, but at that time paper was my confidant. I wrote everything, even if it was a paragraph, or even barely a line. I used to transfer all the bad thoughts in my mind onto paper and just leave it there. I substituted my friends for paper. Paper wouldn’t talk back or tell me that it wasn’t god for me. It would just listen, absorb, and always be there. And that’s when I fell in love with writing. This is when writing became a habit. When I got over irrelevant boyfriend issues, I still had that craving to write something, anything, so I started writing about my day. If I had had a bad day, I would sit with my book...

...Townshend Acts which was created by the British that put tax on tea, glass, lead, paints, paper goods, and many other common items. These items would be made in Britain and the exported to the colonies; therefore, Britain decided to put a tariff on these items, which included a fee for exporting and trade. The colonists were irate because they were British citizens. The Boston Massacre began with a small argument between British Private Hugh White and a few colonists outside the Custom House in Boston on King Street. The argument escalated, more colonists gathered and began to harass Private Hugh White by throwing sticks and snowballs at him. Colonists continued to increase in numbers until there were over 50 colonists at the scene and soldiers were sent to the Custom House to maintain the argument....

...differently from my peers because of the fact that I wanted to be a teacher. When I had bad teachers all I could do was tell myself the things I did not want to do in my own classroom, and there were no good teachers to compare them to. Until I came to college, I did not have any teachers that influenced me in a positive way. By not having those positive factors in my life, my idea of literacy was very negative. When I was younger I would always get in trouble from my teachers because I was very social. My teachers would send notes home to my parents asking them to control my talkative habits because I was distracting to my peers during class. They would stick me away from my friends, which would not work because...

...Bio 173 Fisheries Biology: Term Paper Date: September 3, 2013 File: d:\B173-2013\B173_term_paper.wpd Summary You are to write a scientific term paper about a topic related to fisheries biology. Goal Ron Coleman The goal is for you to produce a term paper that illustrates that you have researched and thought in depth about a topic in fisheries biology. The term paper will tell me that you understand the important issues in a particular field and have identified the current cutting edge in that research. This paper is NOT an essay. I do not want you to explain a topic to me. I want you to discuss current research on a topic. If you find yourself including extensive background material then you are not doing the paper correctly. The paper is about the current research, not just about the phenomenon. For each of your source papers, tell me what the authors were trying to investigate, how they did their investigation, what they found and what it means. It is possible that you have never done this kind of paper before. If you are unclear about what you are doing, ask me about it. If you think that this is just like writing a typical term paper on some topic, then you are dead wrong. Most importantly, think of this as an opportunity to show me what you can do, not as something that you have to do. I want you to discover something and to share that discovery with me. Potential Topics I suggest you look at the following journals for inspiration: Science, Nature, Journal of Fish Biology...

...Some Insight on Plagiarism in Higher Education Amy Joyner Liberty University Evering, L., & Moorman, G. (2012). Rethinking plagiarism in the digital age. Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, 56(1), 35-44. The article written by Evering & Moorman, 2012, is an article about the complexity and issues that evolve around plagiarism. Plagiarism as we see it today is clearly an issue of concern as far as why people do it and what can be done to avoid it. Plagiarism is not just an issue but clearly a serious and ongoing problem in the world today that needs to be put under control. According to Evering & Moorman, 2012, “Most public and private schools, colleges, and universities have academic integrity or honor codes and consequences for plagiarism, but few professors and teachers explicitly address what plagiarism means or provide examples of individual contexts and degrees of unauthorized copying”. Plagiarism is considered a serious issue that needs to be re-exam as far as Evering & Moorman are concern because it is said that not many students understand what plagiarism is let along trying to prevent it. Although several schools have honor codes about plagiarism and the penalties you can get, it’s still not a discussion with students about what it is and how to avoid it. The article states that “students are seldom engaged in instruction or discussion about what plagiarism is, why it is a problem, and how it can be avoided” (Evering & Moorman, 2012)...

...practice and work on. This paper will discuss different strategies for reading, writing, and speaking. Having focus with each category is important to achieve success. There are many different reading strategies that each person has. Some might enjoy reading while others struggle to stay focused. There are different ways of reading strategies such as reading for a short amount of time and taking breaks. You can also take notes while you read so you can review what you have encountered while reading. It is also a good idea to take notes on the text that you do not understand so you can diagnose what is being said. Some people can read quickly and fully understand what the text is explaining, while others will read slow and not be able to comprehend the message. In order to increase reading speed you should try to move your eyes faster, notice and release ineffective habits, and stay flexible (Ellis, 2015). When you move your eyes faster, you tend to see words quickly. It is not necessary to read every word that is in the text, such as and, but, the, etc. Your eyes will focus on the bigger words first. You can release ineffective habits with reading by covering up the words that you have read. You can then note how often you stop and move the card back to reread the text (Ellis, 2015). I have found that it is easier for me to read the text out loud. This helps me focus on the vocabulary. When there is a word that I do not understand or know how to speak, I write it down and search...

...Literature I-search Paper Choosing a topic for a paper such as this one was really difficult for me. I have always been an avid reader and have always loved so many different authors. There are many questions I have about authors, their works and literature in general. For this paper I choose to write about someone who is a little more modern day; someone who everyone would be familiar with, regardless of whether they are a fan or not. I choose to write about the very famous author, Stephen King. Stephen King has always fascinated me, not only as an author but as a person. This is a man who seems to have an imagination that is never ending, with a soul and mind so dark, is it beyond compare. How else could you write and publish over 60 horror books? All of which are unique, intense, and ultimately terrifying. My question is, who is this person and what is it that inspires this creativity and horror? As a child, I grew up in a household of readers. There was never a time I that I can recall my mother, father, brothers, or myself not having one or more books that each of us were reading. My mother’s favorite author was (and is) Stephen King. There was something that intrigued me about this, though I was not allowed to read most of his works for the longest time; of course my mother was concerned that they would be inappropriate for me to read. This only made the intrigue of the author that much more. Once I was old enough to begin discovering his works, I started to understand...

...been a long time since I have done any type of academic writing, nor has writing ever been one of my strengths. Having been enrolled in collegiate classes now, I will give a brief explanation of my approach to writing assignments. First I will have to follow the rules of writing: prewriting, planning, drafting, and revising. I will need to find a good quite and comfortable space to begin. After that I will grab a piece of paper, a pen, and start to write down ideas about my topic, depending on the topic’s subject will determine the types of ideas, and points I want to cover. Once I have all my ideas, and points write down, I will want to do some research on the topic I am writing about. This research will help validate different points and ideas I am writing about. After I complete my research, the next thing to consider will be my audience. Understanding who my audience will be ensures that my writing will relative to who’s reading it, and will also help me keep them interested. With all my ideas and points in front of me, and an understanding of my audience, I can begin piecing everything together on paper. At this time I will not worry about grammar, spelling, or punctuation. Once I have everything down on paper, I will then have to read over it all and find all my errors. I will also want note weaker points for removal, unsupportive statements, or trim access fat to create a more streamlined writing. Then I will set the paper aside for a while, and read it again to check again...

...Guidelines on Writing a Philosophy Paper Author: Jim Pryor, Princeton University [pic] Philosophical writing is different from the writing you'll be asked to do in other courses. Most of the strategies described below will also serve you well when writing for other courses, but don't automatically assume that they all will. Nor should you assume that every writing guideline you've been given by other teachers is important when you're writing a philosophy paper. Some of those guidelines are routinely violated in good philosophical prose (e.g., see the guidelines on grammar, below). Contents • What Does One Do in a Philosophy Paper? • Three Stages of Writing o Early Stages o Write a Draft o Rewrite, and Keep Rewriting • Minor Points • How You'll Be Graded What Does One Do in a Philosophy Paper? 1. A philosophy paper consists of the reasoned defense of some claim Your paper must offer an argument. It can't consist in the mere report of your opinions, nor in a mere report of the opinions of the philosophers we discuss. You have to defend the claims you make. You have to offer reasons to believe them. So you can't just say: My view is that P. You must say something like: My view is that P. I believe this because... or: I find that the following considerations...provide a convincing argument for P. Similarly, don't just say: Descartes says that Q. Instead...

... I love writing, but at the same time I hate reading. I can write all day long about anything. The one thing I really hate about reading is reading out loud. I start to read fast or I mess up the words when I’m reading. In the 10th grade my teacher made me get up and read a short story about this old man who got shot by his grandson. I think this was the start of school and this couldn’t come at a different time. So I got up and started to look at everyone. Everybody was looking at me while I was standing and waiting for everybody to stop talking and look at me. When I got all the way to the front of the room I just started to read I didn’t care if everybody was looking at me or if they were still talking. I got to page.11 and that’s when everybody started to laugh. That’s when I called my teacher an asshole and walked out of class. I love writing because I got to write a paper for my school. It was about how my class was going to take over the world and showing people that we can make it in this big world. I still messed up on some of my words and spelling but I got help by some of my teachers and classmates. But at the end I still had a bad ass paper. People always wanted me to write their papers. They saw that I was always getting A’s on my papers. People didn’t understand how I wasn’t good at reading but I can write a good paper. I know I’m not the best at reading or writing but to me I’m good at it. I want someone to push me to read. If I have that I know I can...
