An IEP or individual educational plan is a lengthy document but a very important one. This individualized plan seeks to aid a student who has a disability in better succeeding in the classroom. This plan consists of roughly 10 different parts and requires a dedicated team/ meeting to be properly executed. The first section of a IEP is the student demographic. Basically, in this section the students are described in various ways. Very important things such as the type of disability and age, gender and grade are some of the parts listed in this section. Secondly is a list of the members who will take part in the planning and meeting for the conduction of goals and objectives on the student’s behalf. The next section on document …show more content…
Such backgrounds include students present levels and student’s achievements and functional performance. This section in short documents the strengths and weakness of the student. This section will aid in the development of objectives and goals for student during the meetings. Next is a section that comprises of two separate but similar sections. The next two section document if the student will participate in statewide and districtwide tests. If not participating then this section serves as documentation of alternative assessments. After this basic info the document goes into the heart and purpose of the IEP. The next two sections of the document are where the IEP team will document annual and short-term goals and objectives for the given students IEP. These goals also include clear criteria, evaluation and progress sections on the document. The next section lists services that the student has utilized in the past as refence for the team. An IEP team consists of numerous people and each play a key role in executing and developing the goals and objectives on behalf of the students. Depending on the need and thoughts of the parent there are a variety of specialists that can be part of the students IEP meeting. At the very least the meeting will have the special education teacher. Special education teacher specializes in working with students with disabilities so this will in turn provides a valuable perspective. According to the Oregon IEP document there must also be someone there that can interpret instructional implications of assessments. This could be specialist and is valuable in gaining info on assessment and progress of student to make adjustment to help student succeed. There may be the need of a language pathologists. However, this specialist is only needed if the student has limited English proficiency according to the Oregon IEP document. Lastly the team may comprise of a person who has special expertise with the student. As the Oregon IEP Document explains this is up to the parent however can be valuable perspective because the person has had experience working with the student in past. ...My MT is a resource/ inclusion teacher. We recently prepared for an annual IEP meeting this week. She first made sure that she made assessments and notes for the student for the last few weeks and looked to see if the student had reached any IEP goals that had been set from the previous year. She will then review his/her progress reports. Once she has reviewed all the data, she review which goals have been met and which ones need to be readjusted and kept for the current IEP. She also takes the data to make other achievable goals for the student in reading and math. Once she has created her goals, she sets a meeting with the general education teacher to discuss these goals and see if they have any other goals or input they would like to add to the IEP. It is important for her to try and meet with the general education teacher before the IEP, this way they can discuss other information that may need to be added such as a BIP, social goals or additional support she may think he may need.
