It is extremely important as a manager to recognize that there are many different ways that each of your team members learns, works, likes to communicate and how they all work together to form a successful team. One of the tools a manager could use is the Meyers Brigs Personality test. A manager can learn a lot about how to best communicate with each team member. Knowing each personality type may also help teams learn to improve their level of self-efficacy as they work through projects. Managers can also benefit from recognizing that there are three different types of organizational commitment and how each have their own effect on a team member’s behavior. These are just three of the many theories or tools that a manager can use to help create a team that works well together and uses each other’s strengths to overcome some of the opportunities. As a leader it is important to realize that everyone is a little different. The Meyers Brigs Personality test is one tool that could be really helpful as a manager. Each of the four areas that the test looks at are distinct and unique traits. As a manager knowing that a team member is an introvert and prefers to correspond via e-mail for casual notes or announcements can be a great tool. That team member may best absorb information that they read on their own time and can then respond. This may be a significantly more effective than stopping by their desk to share the same information face to face. It might also help to understand what a specific team member always stops over at your desk to give you updates when you might prefer to get them in e-mail. That team member might be an extrovert and feels the communication is best when face to face with an open dialog. These interactions may also be outside of your team and knowing and understanding you team members traits will help you coach them on interacting with other.
